Chapter 79 â When the Name Was Called
âAhâŚâ
The Duchess gave an awkward smile, but Loic didnât immediately withdraw his hand.
If he didnât sometimes do things like this, she might even forget that he was her husband.
Only when her frown faded and her cheeks flushed red did Loic slowly let go.
âSorry. You looked upset.â
The Duchess self-consciously touched her forehead.
âIt seems the Merchantsâ Guild interfered again. They probably blocked Goldrainâs clerks from applying to the management office.â
âIf I had known it would trouble you like this, Iâd have dismissed the Guildmaster immediately.â
âThat would cause backlash.â
âI donât care.â
âBut I do. And honestly, dealing with the current situation is easier than breaking in a new person.â
The Duchess firmly cut off his words.
ââŚSo I was thinking of hiring some of the orphans instead.â
âThe orphanage?â
âYes. Once theyâre adults, itâs hard for them to keep staying there. If we hired them at the office and provided room and board, it would help them prepare for independence.â
âIf the children can find employment, thatâs a good thing. Iâll have Perel take care of it.â
âThank you.â
The Duchess seemed satisfied, thinking the well-educated orphans could also assist shopkeepers who couldnât read.
âBy the way, thereâs a young man named Jerome at the orphanageâŚâ
At that sudden name, Loicâs brow furrowed.
âHeâs very clever and quick-witted.â
ââŚIs that so.â
âAnd heâs quite handsome too. Heâs so charming that even Cecilia couldnât resist him!â
ââŚAnd you?â
âPardon?â
âYou said the maid fell for him.â
Loicâs voice had unconsciously gone thin as he spoke.
The Duchess looked at him, then chuckled softly.
Maybe he was being childish. He cursed himself for saying such a silly thing.
âI almost fell for him tooâŚâ she teased.
âBut how could I, when my husband is so dashing and handsome?â
It was the kind of playful comment she sometimes made when he got too close.
Still, his neck flushed hot.
If Iâm so great, then whyâŚ
Loic pressed his lips together tightly.
âSo my wonderful husband doesnât need to be jealous,â she said, soothing him like a child.
Her tone only made his chest tighten.
ââŚThen⌠will you give me some attention too?â
Heâd said it.
Clenching his fists under the table until his nails dug into his palms, Loic regretted it instantly.
âEh?â
The Duchess blinked.
âAâAttention?â
Her flustered voice betrayed her confusion.
âI already pay you so much attention!â she insisted.
âYou give the same attention to maids, knights, even innkeepers.â
He knew he sounded pathetic, but he couldnât stop.
Because for him, time was shortâhe only had a year.
Why should he share her precious attention with so many others?
And the number just keeps growing.
Maidservants who never left her side, knights who shadowed her all day, administrators who pestered her constantly, villagers who sought her outâŚ
âEven the wizard,â he muttered bitterly.
Enoliusâthe one who avoided humans and lived alone in the far tower. Even he kept visiting her.
âEnol? He only came to discuss the fountain project.â
âThatâs not the point!â
Loicâs jealousy exploded.
âWhy do you call him by a pet name?â
âOh, he asked me toâŚâ
Just remembering that smug look the wizard gave him while visiting the greenhouse made Loicâs blood boil.
âYou call me âDuke.ââ
âBecause you are the Duke?â
She looked puzzled, as if asking what else she should call him.
âI wantâŚyou to.â
ââŚ?â
He took a deep breath, summoning the courage heâd practiced so many times.
ââŚCall me by my name.â
âLoic?â
Without hesitation, she said it.
âWould you prefer that?â
As if it was nothing at all.
But Loicâs heart pounded like it might burst.
âBut if I call you by name, wonât others think it improper? Well⌠maybe if itâs just the two of usâŚâ
Her worried words barely registered.
âI also wantâŚâ
Loic gripped his knees so tightly they turned white, forcing out the words.
âI want to call you by your name.â
He glanced at her nervously.
âMy name?â
She shrugged.
âOf course. I told you from the beginning you could call me by my name.â
Back then, you refused so muchâŚ
She pouted a little. Loic, his face burning, finally spoke her name.
âAnnette.â
The word rolled sweetly off his tongue, like candy.
Her cheeks flushed faintly.
âHearing it out loud feels a little embarrassing.â
Her shy smile sent a rush of indescribable emotion through him.
Annette.
Did she know that just saying her name made him happy?
He stared at her quietly. She laughed nervously at his intensity, fiddling with her papers.
âAnnette.â
He gently took her hand. Warmth spread from their palms the moment they touched.
âAnnette, I know how well youâve been managing everything. And I am grateful.â
He wrapped her small hand softly in his.
âBut even if you enjoy working, donât overdo it. Youâre not strong.â
âBut Iâm fine,â she said, lowering her gaze.
âThis isnât too much. The real work is done by the administrators. I justâŚâ
âYouâve collapsed twice already since coming here,â he said quietly, guilt prickling.
âItâs because I enjoy it,â she replied, wriggling her hand in his.
âAnd Iâm glad I can contribute. The townsfolk seem like such good, honest people tooâŚâ
âIâm not saying stop completely.â
âAlright. Iâll only do what I can handle, and Iâll take care of myself. Is that good enough?â
She looked up at him with sparkling eyes.
âPromise me.â
âOkay, promise!â
She suddenly held out her pinky finger.
ââŚ?â
âYou donât know how to make a promise?â
She curled his hand until only his pinky stuck out, then hooked it with hers.
âThis is how you do itâpinky promise!â
She laughed, admiring how long his pinky was.
Loic tried to calm his racing heart. Secretly, he wished this promise would never be broken.

Elsewhere
The Marquis angrily rummaged through a tray of letters.
âStill nothing today?â
The butler said nothing, his face troubled.
After she had declared she would no longer reply, every letter he had sent to Annette in the north had gone unanswered.
Should I write directly to the Duke instead?
But if Loic was intercepting her letters, then contacting him would only make the Marquis look foolish.
What am I supposed to tell the Empress?
A letter had arrived from the Imperial Palace not long ago. The Empress had inquired kindly if his third daughter was adjusting well in the north.
But he knew very well it was no simple inquiry.
If the Empress discovered that he had no control over his daughterâŚ
I must act quickly.
Just then, another envelope caught his eye.
âWhatâs this?â
âItâs from Madam,â the butler said cautiouslyâreferring to the new Marchioness, his second wife.
Another request for money, no doubt.
He clicked his tongue, about to set it aside, when the butler added,
âWith the holiday coming, Madam and the young master plan to return.â
ââŚAlready?â
The Marquis thought of his youngest son, his fourth child by his new wife.
Perhaps I can use that boy somehowâŚ
He stroked his chin, already plotting.
That means heâs her half brother right? If he plans on sending him to the north to check in on her thatâs just dumb. Heâs going to end up in big trouble. What I donât like, is that hell definitely go and cause problems. Since heâs only her half brother, she should be able to refuse his entry tho
