Chapter 34
I Am the King of Songs
Although I Am the King of Songs had already been recorded once before, it was actually a live broadcast program. The first âsong selection by lotteryâ session had been pre-recorded as a behind-the-scenes segment for promotion on video sites.
That short teaser had already set the internet buzzing.
Some were eagerly anticipating what sparks would fly between King Chu Tian and the legendary producer Teacher Yan;
Some were worried whether Yin Ru would once again âfail on stageâ;
Some wondered how pop-singer Zhang Yao had squeezed into a lineup full of powerful vocalists;
And some lamented that Xia Shi and Chu Xun hadnât drawn lots together, hoping theyâd collaborate in the future.
But the most anticipated pairing turned out to beâZhang Yao and Xia Shi.
With Zhang Yaoâs half-baked singing skills, how on earth would she handle a technically demanding folk song?
Beijing Television Station, Studio No. 1
Xia Shi thought the showâs producers were clever for having Chu Xun go first.
He was a powerhouseâstrong vocals, great dancer, and the song he was performing had been rearranged by Teacher Yan with Chu Xunâs own input.
It was a rock numberâenergetic, emotional, and fiery.
Within minutes, he had whipped the audience into a frenzy, everyone clapping and moving with the beat.
When Chu Xun came offstage, he greeted every guest, giving Xia Shi a warm hug.
Xia Shi smiled, âLooks like your half-year of training paid off. Huge improvement!â
âOf course! Soâhow was it?â
âAn auditory feast,â Xia Shi praised sincerely.
âJust auditory?â Chu Xun frowned in mock outrage. âIâve got this handsome face, killer outfitâlook at me, man! Iâm walking perfection, the kind that makes cars crash and flowers bloom, and all you noticed was the sound?â
Xia Shi burst out laughing, pointing at the camera.
âShameless. Totally shameless. You realize weâre on national TV right now?â
The cameras switched angles as they spokeâbetween performances, the broadcast often cut to the guest lounge for reactions.
Chu Xun waved a finger. âDonât pin that label on me. If weâre ranking shamelessness, your husband Lu Tingchuan is number one in the world. His level of brazenness? Unmatched across the universe! Do you know back in school, he actually had the guts to challenge me online, saying we werenât even in the same league?â
He was referring to the time during the school sports meet when Xia Shi had hurt her leg. Chu Xun, who didnât know what happened, saw Lu Tingchuan taking her to the infirmary and assumed he had injured her. The twoâalready at oddsâended up in a fistfight.
But if weâre talking who got beaten worseâŚ
Cough. Xia Shi cleared her throat. âIf I remember correctly, you were the one hurt more that day. Tingchuan said thatâs exactly why he started working out afterwardâand even learned martial arts! Back then you two were about even, but now? You wouldnât stand a chance.â
Chu Xunâs grin collapsed. âCan you not expose my weaknesses like that? Ever heard of mercy in conversation? Seriously, youâre all heartless once youâve got a man!â
Xia Shi laughed so hard her stomach hurt. But inside, she was relievedâChu Xunâs teasing meant heâd finally moved past his emotional baggage.
Theyâd grown up togetherânot romantically, but with deep affectionâand she didnât want to lose that friendship.
Online
Their playful banter had the internet exploding.
âWTF! Iâm watching a singing show and suddenly got hit with a husband-and-wife lovefest. Can we live?!â
âSounds like Chu Xun, Xia Shi, and Lu Tingchuan have history! Iâm so curious!â
âLOL! âMost shameless man in the worldâ? @LuTingchuan dude, youâve been called out!â
âThey were the golden boy and girl once! But honestly, seeing Chu Xun and Xia Shi as lifelong friends feels kind of perfect.â
âSo whenâs Chu Xun getting married? Their kids should totally meet!â
âBro, youâre thinking too far ahead.â
âYouâre all wrong! Xuanxuanâs obviously destined for our Yuanyuan!â
âGet lost! Heâs clearly closer to Betty!â
âYouâre all delusionalâXuanxuanâs not even aware yet!â
Back on stage, the next performance had started.
Yin Ru went second. Her song was simple and well-suited to her, with Teacher Zhangâs clever rearrangement masking her weaknesses. She performed smoothlyâbut it was safe, unremarkable.
Then came Zhang Yao.
âGood luck!â Xia Shi whispered, pumping her fist.
Zhang Yao was nervous, but she had one big advantageâshe thrived under pressure.
The moment she started singing, Xia Shi knewâtheyâd already won half the battle.
Xia Shi had gathered thirty backup vocalists from six different ethnic groups, including several experts in vocal percussion.
The opening began with a rich blend of soundsâwaves, birdsong, rustling leavesâmimicking the sounds of nature, creating a vivid soundscape that made the audience feel they were inside the song.
Then Zhang Yaoâs soft, delicate voice entered. The folk songâs melody was originally grand and sweeping, but her gentle interpretation gave it a fresh tenderness.
During the chorus, the difficult high-pitched segments were carried by the harmonizing ensembleâthe thirty voices blending perfectly, elevating the whole performance and balancing Zhang Yaoâs weaknesses.
When the song ended, the hall was silent. The audience was stunnedâno one had expected that.
Then, thunderous applause erupted, lasting minutes.
Online viewers were equally floored:
âHoly crap, I just heard a different version of this folk song!â
âI grew up with this song but⌠itâs like hearing it for the first time!â
âDidnât think it could be done this way!â
âTIME never disappoints! Zhang Yao actually sounds amazing!â
âSheâs improved, but letâs be realâthe magic was those thirty backup singers.â
âTrue, but thatâs exactly why TIMEâs a geniusâwho else would think to arrange it like that?â
Xia Shi scrolled through the comments, grinning.
âReviews are great!â
âItâs all thanks to you, Sister Xia Shi! When I drew that song, I thought I was doomed.â
âBelieve in yourself,â Xia Shi said playfully. âYouâve got potential.â
No praise meant more to Zhang Yao than thatâfrom a legend herself. She beamed with joy.
When results came out, Chu Xun won first place as expected. Xia Shi and Zhang Yao took second.
The arrangement had been bold and creativeâcritics loved itâbut Zhang Yaoâs technical skills still lagged. Without that unique harmonic twist, they likely wouldnât have ranked so high.
Yin Ru, landing fifth, wasnât happy. Sheâd assumed that no matter what, she was still leagues above Zhang Yao.
But reality said otherwise.
She bit her lip hardâbut couldnât show anger on camera. Soon after, the lottery for next weekâs pairing began.
This time, it was live.
Xia Shi felt her luck was terribleâshe drew a childrenâs song, âFirefly.â
The singers each held their numbered ping-pong balls.
The director announced, âNow please reveal your numbers and see who your next partners are.â
At that exact momentâclack!âChu Xun and Zhang Yao accidentally bumped into each other, dropping their balls. Chu Xun quickly picked them up, handed No. 3 to Zhang Yao and kept No. 5 himself.
âSorry, my bad,â he said.
Zhang Yao blinked. âTeacher Chu, Iââ
âYours is No. 3. Great songâgo for it!â
Indeed, the song was easier and more suited to her voice.
Xia Shi noticed thoughâChu Xun casually turned to her and said, âWe drew the same number this time. Looks like the fans will finally get their wish.â
After the show ended, Xia Shi quietly pulled him aside.
âWhatâs going on?â
Chu Xun tilted his head toward the staffer holding the lottery box. âTwice in a row, same pattern. Donât you think thatâs too coincidental? Even if production wanted drama, one time wouldâve been enough. Youâre a top-tier artistâthey wouldnât set you up like this twice. Always with the weakest singer? Somethingâs fishy.â
Her eyes narrowed. The staff member in chargeâLittle Qianâhad indeed acted strange both times, watching her nervously during her draw.
When Qian left the studio, Chu Xun gestured. âLetâs follow.â
She went into the womenâs restroom. Chu Xun stayed outside while Xia Shi listened by the door.
They overheard bits and pieces:
âItâs all Chu Xunâs fault!â
âDonât worry, I donât blame you. But Iâll need your help again. I refuse to believe Xia Shiâs luck will last forever. The higher the fame, the higher the expectationsâonce she fails, sheâll fall hard.â
âYou can go now.â
The door opened.
Qian frozeââX-Xia Teacher! Chu Teacher!â
Yin Ru paled. âChu Xun? Noâitâs not what you think! IâI can explainââ
Chu Xunâs tone was icy. âThen explain. Iâm listening.â
But Yin Ru stammered, unable to form words.
Chu Xun sighed and turned to Xia Shi. âLetâs go.â
Later, in the production lounge
The director, assistant producers, and guests gathered.
Xia Shi calmly sipped tea. âShe should be removed from the show.â
The director hesitated. âTeacher Xia, Little Qianâs actions were our fault. Weâll fire her immediately. But⌠we canât replace a main guest mid-season. The audience will notice. And⌠well, Yin Ruâs sponsor is Liang Feng.â
He didnât need to explain furtherâLiang Fengâs money funded part of the show. Crossing him wasnât easy.
âHow about this,â the director tried, âYin Ru can apologize to you publicly, and we promise fair treatment going forwardââ
Before he finished, Yin Ru jumped up. âApologize? To her? Never! Xia Shi, who do you think you are? You say I should quit, so I should?â
The directorâs face darkened. Why did she have to make this worse?
Xia Shi stood. âFine. Then Iâll quit.â
âDirector Jin, youâre rightâitâs no big deal. I donât care what song I draw or who I work with. But I wonât share a stage with someone who keeps scheming behind my back.â
Chu Xun immediately said, âI agree. If Xia Shi leaves, I leave too.â
The director almost fainted. Two biggest stars, gone? The showâs dead!
âTeachers, pleaseâdonât be rash! We can work this out!â
Yin Ru swayed, her face white. Xia Shiâs stance she could ignoreâbut Chu Xun siding against her crushed her completely.
She laughed suddenly, an eerie, brittle sound. Everyone staredâuneasy.
Sensing danger, Chu Xun stood, ready to calm her downâ
Just then, Ye Ping, Yin Ruâs manager, rushed in. Seeing Yin Ruâs expression, she grabbed her arm. âAâRu, letâs go.â
âWhy should I leave?!â Yin Ru screamed, struggling.
Ye Ping whispered urgently in her ear: âLiang Feng is looking for you.â
Four wordsâand Yin Ru froze. Her face drained of color, her body trembling violently.
Ye Pingâs eyes flickered with pity. She told an assistant, âTake her home.â
Once Yin Ru was gone, she turned back to the others. âI apologize on her behalf. She was wrong, but thankfully, no lasting damage was done. Director Jin, Teacher Xia⌠surely thereâs room for compromise?â
The director stayed quiet. His phone rangâhis deputy handed it over. âDirector, itâs Jiang Lingâs agent.â
After a short call, he returned, smiling brightly. âYe Ping, youâve been in the industry long enough to know how this works. What Yin Ru did was out of line. If word of this manipulation spreads, our showâs finished.â
Ye Pingâs face paled. She understood instantlyâthe call had changed everything.
Jiang Ling, one of the top male vocalists in the Chinese music scene, second only to Chu Xunâand from the powerful Jiang family, shareholders in Tianyao Entertainment, one of the industryâs âBig Three.â
In other wordsâYin Ru was expendable.
Ye Ping sighed. âUnderstood. Weâll handle her exit quietly. Please give us a few days to prepare a proper announcement.â
That was as good as an admissionâand a request for silence.
Director Jin nodded, relieved. âTeacher Xia, the showâs only aired one episode. If a scandal breaks now, itâll hurt everyone. What do you think?â
Xia Shi wasnât unreasonable. She nodded. âDo what you think is best.â
The director finally relaxed.
Outside, Xia Shi found Lu Tingchuan waiting by his car.
Her assistant Tian Tian raised a hand. âIâll head back in the company van. See you, Sister Xia Shi!â
Xia Shi got in. âSo, Jiang Lingâyour doing?â
Lu Tingchuan chuckled. âThatâs what youâre curious about? Not even a compliment for your brilliant husband?â
She crooked a finger, kissed his cheek. âThere. Your reward.â
âThank you, my queen.â
âSo tell me the truth. Jiang Lingâs from the Jiang family, not your company. How many favors did you burn to pull this off? Wasnât worth it.â
He grinned. âNone at all. The Jiangs are shareholders, not executives. Theyâve been trying to move into tech investments but losing money fast. Right now, theyâre looking for funding for a new project. Coincidentally, Universe Group was considering investing. Zhou Zhang mentioned it to me earlier. Half an hour ago, I called the Jiangs directly.â
Xia Shi laughed. Half an hour agoâexactly when sheâd discovered Yin Ruâs sabotage. Tian Tian must have informed him, and heâd simply seized the perfect timing.
By âhelpingâ Jiangâs project get approved early, heâd earned their gratitudeâand in return, Jiang Ling appeared on King of Songs. A small favor for a huge business payoff.
âYouâre shamelessly efficient,â she teased. âArenât you afraid theyâll see through it?â
âZhou Zhang wonât out me,â he said easily. âBy the way, you and Chu Xun catching the culprit togetherâwhy didnât you call me to join in?â
So jealous.
âAre you jealous?â she laughed.
âChu Xun talked smack about me on air today!â
She burst out laughing again.
Lu Tingchuan grinned, plotting alreadyâheâd show everyone who the real golden couple* was.
âOh, by the way,â he added, âYu Siyuan asked if weâd guest on his show.â
âA Date with the Stars?â
âYeah.â
Xia Shi frowned. That show was infamousâit was live, unscripted, and host Yu Siyuanâs questions were often embarrassingly direct. Only the boldest celebrities dared appear.
Lu Tingchuan saw her hesitation. âDonât worry. Weâre friends. We even did Whereâs Baby Going? together. He wonât cross the line. Plus, Xuanxuan and his daughter Wanwan are closeâhe wouldnât dare upset you. If he does, weâll tell Xuanxuan to ignore Wanwan. Heâll surrender instantly.â
Xia Shi facepalmed. Using their kid as leverageâhow typical.
He continued, âThe next guest canceled last minute. Heâs desperate. Think of it as doing a favorâfavors come in handy later. Next time weâre stuck with a bad filming location, we can swap with him. You donât want Xuanxuan living somewhere awful again, right?â
That last line made her squint suspiciously. Whenever he brought up Xuanxuan, he always had an ulterior motive.
âReally?â she asked dryly.
âReally!â He nodded fervently.
After three seconds of silent staring, she sighed. âFine.â
He exhaled in relief, grinning inwardlyâmission accomplished!
