Chapter 77
The clash of steel rang sharp as Flint and Vivian locked blades. Vivian tried to deflect Flintās sword, but it wouldnāt budgeāhe was just too strong.
āElianoāsheās my savior!ā Eliano screamed, gathering all her strength.
āShe rescued me!ā Her cry broke the tension. Flint suddenly relaxed his blade, sent Vivianās sword clattering aside, and rushed to Elianoās side.
Vivian, unused to being overpowered, sank to the ground in shock and exhaustion.
Flint knelt, his worry plain as he gently spoke:
āAre you all right? No⦠youāre not.ā
āYes⦠now Iām safe⦠because I met youā¦ā Eliano whispered, trembling and shivering from cold and fear.
āShe saved me⦠she fought the monster⦠she healed meā¦ā Eliano leaned her head against Flintās chest.
Flint didnāt need more explanation. He wrapped his cloak around her, lifted her into his arms carefullyālike handling fragile glassāas he said, āI understand. Say no more.ā
His warmth calmed Elianoās trembling.
Vivian, recovering, stomped forward, still bristlingāuntil Flint addressed her:
āI misunderstoodāplease forgive my rudeness, and thank you for saving my wife.ā
Vivian, humbled by his respect, straightened and said,
āYouāre Howard, Duke of BiantecaāLord of the North, yes?ā
Flint blinked. Vivian shrugged.
āShe is the Duchess now; the rumor spread fast that you were searching every inch of the forest.ā
Eliano managed a faint smile:
āThank you, Vivian.ā
āIt was nothing. The Duchess is your wifeākidnapped by her fatherās orders, no less.ā
Elianoās lips quivered as she realized the swift spread of news. Vivian offered to accept their gratitude:
āJust remember today; thatās thanks enough.ā
Then, like a shadow, she leaped into the trees and vanished.
Flint carried Eliano into a nearby cave that Vivian had scouted. As he lit a small fire, Eliano took pain relief medicine and warmed herself.
A military dogāwhich had sniffed its way backāapproached. Flint glared fiercely, and the dog whimpered in fear. But when Eliano offered a gentle hand, it wagged and cuddled herārolling over and showering her in affection. Flintās frown softened in surprise.
Eliano smiled at the dog.
āHello. You found me, didnāt you?ā
The dogās bond with Eliano sparked a soft warmth in Flintās eyes. He thought: a dog of the North seems just right for her.
Then Eliano looked at him with concern:
āWhat about your knights? Why did you come so deep into the forest by yourself?ā
āI lost them somewhere. The signal flare should guide them back,ā Flint replied.
Eliano frowned at the thought but shook her head:
āYou shouldnāt put yourself at risk.ā
āAnd you were in danger,ā Flint replied, pausing a moment before looking at the dog again.
That glance told her heād been worried sick.
āIām sorry,ā he said softly.
Elianoās green eyes glimmered: āYou saved me. Itās enough.ā
āAnd⦠thanks to Sir Himenez,ā Flint added, acknowledging his aide.
Eliano lifted her gown slightly to point at the leather dagger sheath strapped to her thigh:
āHimenez gave me this, too. Please donāt punish him.ā
Flint nodded.
They fell into silence. Eliano noticed her hair felt differentāher natural pink. She saw Flint staring at it.
āWhy havenāt you mentioned it?ā she asked, a little shy.
Sheād expected him to comment on the hair change. When they first met by chance in Astaās flower shop, he recognized her under a veil.
Flint was quiet for a moment, then said,
āI donāt find it odd.ā
āReally?ā
āItās beautiful.ā
His face softened.
āIt matches your eyes.ā
That warmed her heart. He continued:
āThereās a flower in the North, the same pale pink. I want to show it to you.ā
She blushed as he touched her forehead.
āYou feel warm⦠you have a fever.ā
Eliano smiled weakly.
āIām a little dizzy⦠tired.ā
āWait here,ā Flint said. He spread his cloak on the damp ground, and Eliano lay down again.
She slipped a magic earring back on, turning her hair black again.
Flintās eyes widened in surprise, and she tapped it playfully:
āItās a magical earringāit changes hair color.ā
Flint helped her lie down on the cloak and stepped outside to light another signal flareājust in case.
The dog circled protectively as Flint left the cave, collecting berries and drawing water from a nearby stream.
Suddenly, the dog barked urgently. Flint dashed back into the cave.
āEliano!ā he called, startled to find her pale and shivering. Sheād developed hypothermia: weak breathing, cold skin, and a faint, delirious whisper.
āI⦠donāt want to die⦠donāt want⦠Marionā¦ā
She murmured nonstop, her lips blue, body trembling. Time had run out.
Flint knew he had to act. He stripped off his own garments and began carefully undressing her soaked layers, preparing to warm her against his own bodyāhoping to save her life.
Ooooh~
