Episode 61
Janeās voice had a trace of hope. Eliano had asked a few times if Flint had come byāJane had taken that as a sign of longing and had interpreted it romantically.
But Eliano pulled the blanket over her head.
Jane immediately understood what that meant. She backed away quietly, whispering that it was okay. Then, she went to Flint and spoke cheerfully.
āHer Ladyship has fallen into a deep sleep. Perhaps you could return tomorrow, Your Grace?ā
Flintās silver-gray eyes narrowed at Jane. She suddenly felt nervous, but forced herself to keep talking.
āShe regained consciousness, but she fell asleep again not long after. The doctor also said she needs to rest. She walked a little but was very weak⦠and although the seizures have stopped, sheās still sensitive.ā
Flint went quiet for a moment, then spoke calmly.
āShe doesnāt want to see me.ā
Jane bowed her head, feeling guilty. But it wasnāt her bad acting that gave her awayāit was her inconsistency. Just that morning, Jane had offered to let Flint see Eliano for a short moment. Now she was saying to come back later. Of course he noticed.
Then Flint spoke louder, directing his voice toward the bed.
āI wanted to see you awake. I also⦠owe you an apology.ā
Jane didnāt stop him. He wasnāt yellingāand the words werenāt harsh.
āIām sorry about the letters. I read all of them.ā
Elianoās eyes flew open under the blanket. She was hidden from view, so Flint couldnāt see her.
In truth, Eliano didnāt know how to face Flint. Should she act proud and thank him? Cry and ask for comfort? Or act ashamed and look away like a proper lady? She didnāt know what was right.
āBut Lady Eliano⦠those letters must never be made public. That can never be the wayā¦ā
Flint suddenly stopped. Elianoās small voice had broken the silence.
āAre you disappointed? That a noble lady⦠wasnāt raised nobly at all.ā
She had seduced him and pushed for a rushed marriage contract. She hadnāt told him she was a child born out of wedlock. In a way, it was all a lie.
She heard his footsteps draw closer. Eliano gripped the blanket tighter, speaking fast.
āThereās nothing more to ask. What you saw that dayāthatās who I am. You must know that by now, after reading the letters.ā
He was right next to her now. Her palms were sweaty from holding the blanket so tightly.
āIām just my fatherās property. He only pretended to love and protect me so he could boost my āvalueā for marriage. The elegance and grace everyone praises⦠it was all created through his whips.ā
Her voice was flat, full of self-mockery.
āLike you once said⦠I practiced etiquette every day just so I wouldnāt get beaten.ā
Why was she saying this? Maybe she was afraid he would send her back. But honestly, she didnāt know what else to say. Her thoughts were tangled, and in that confusion, the words just poured out.
Flint stayed silent. Elianoās heart beat painfully fast. She felt worthless.
āā¦You must have suffered greatly.ā
Those few words broke the silence. His voice was quiet, as always. But those simple wordsāones no one had ever said to her beforeāhit Eliano like a wave. Her chest ached.
āDonāt speak of painful things anymore.ā
She felt him lift the blanket. Though firm, his touch didnāt feel threatening.
As soon as their eyes met, Elianoās voice caught in her throat.
āThat will never happen again. The Rosana family will never touch you again.ā
His tone wasnāt gentle, but Elianoās eyes welled up with tears. Flintās hand twitched.
āā¦You donāt have to make me your Grand Duchess.ā
She started to spiral againāfalling into self-hatred.
āThis all looks bad now, but when the gossip dies down⦠you can still back out. There have been cases where marriage contracts were brokenā¦ā
She knew she needed to marry him to avoid being sent back. That was the entire purpose of their rushed marriage.
āEliano.ā
Flint called her name like a warning. Her face was full of sadness, and he wanted her to stop.
She lowered her head, wiped her tears, and said in a steady voice,
āThen⦠let me expose my father. Let me tell the social circles everything. Thatās what I prepared for. Thatās why I worked so hard in high society.ā
āNo. Absolutely not.ā
His firm rejection made her look up in shock. Their eyes met againāgray and green, locked together.
āI wonāt throw you out there just to protect my reputation. I told you before⦠leave everything to me.ā
His words meant he had no intention of canceling the marriage. Even though there was no wedding yet or official registration.
āYour Grace, please think carefully. Do you really want to be known as a kidnapper? Let me take the blame.ā
āYouāre trying to turn me into a coward,ā he said coldly.
Elianoās eyes trembled, but she spoke with strength.
āThen Iām the coward. Who would dare blame you? You rescued me from a cruel father. Youāre a hero. Why avoid the simple path? Donāt get dragged into my fatherās schemes!ā
āYouāre asking me to hide behind my wife like a shield. But I donāt fight that way.ā
Eliano felt both happy and frustrated. He wasnāt backing out of their marriageābut his stubbornness made her want to shake him. Her emotions were all over the place.
āIf Iāve caused trouble for my husband, then isnāt it natural for me to shield him?!ā
Flintās expression softened just a little. He glanced away and replied,
āI never said it was wrong. And⦠I accept your heart.ā
His voice was gentler now. But to Eliano, it only added to her frustration.
āIām the one who should protect you. You focus on recovering.ā
āIāā
He cut her off.
āWhen I carried you out of that house⦠I made up my mind. Iāll never let Rosana touch even a single strand of your hair again.ā
āā¦.ā
āThat goes for anyone else, too.ā
āā¦.ā
āI wonāt put you on display just to prove my innocence.ā
Then he added with a tiny smile,
āBesides, I did break into someoneās house, so Iām not exactly innocent.ā
It was meant as a jokeābut Eliano wasnāt laughing.
āYour Grace, you canāt underestimate my fatherās power. Heāll destroy your reputation! He already is!ā
Flint shrugged.
āHeās already called me a lowborn hostage. Whatās a kidnapper on top of that?ā
Eliano winced. That insult had come from her own father.
āLetās just say I was blinded by love. Itās not like there arenāt dozens of men obsessed with you.ā
That was something Prince Heriath had suggested. The prince had advised Flint to make it seem like heād fallen helplessly in love with Eliano. That would help soften the publicās opinion.
āBut Your Grace, this would be the perfect way to take my father down. I know Iām not the most⦠graceful Grand Duchessāā
āEliano.ā
Flint interrupted again. Eliano frownedābut he didnāt stop.
To be continuedā¦
Flint.. I am going to smack your head⦠if you planned something discuss it fully so atleast she will feel reassured .. donāt just one sidedly ask her to rest !!!!
