Episode 47
Eliano was told by her father to attend the Howard family’s banquet. It wasn’t just a suggestion—it was a command.
The same order was given to Damien and Isabella.
But Eliano came down with a terrible fever and cold. She was too sick to even leave her bed.
“You can’t even take care of your health! And you call yourself a Rosana? You useless girl!”
Duke Rosana dragged his sick daughter out of bed and forced her to kneel on the cold floor. He screamed at her and didn’t hold back from hitting her.
Eliano, unable to fight back against her father’s strength, fell to the ground with a red mark on her cheek.
“Did I ask too much of you?! You’ve been running around carelessly, and now your body is like this!”
Eliano coughed weakly, struggling to breathe.
“Even if you collapse in the palace, you will attend!”
As Duke Rosana roared, Eliano bowed her head and hid her eyes. Still coughing, she stayed silent while he stormed out of the hall.
Isabella, who had been watching anxiously, ran to Eliano’s side. Jane, Eliano’s maid, sat nearby crying quietly with a pale face. Isabella snapped at her.
“What were you doing?! You’re her personal maid, but you didn’t take care of her at all! She got hit because of you!”
Isabella raised her hand toward Jane, but Eliano stopped her.
“That’s enough. It’s not her fault…”
Jane had already been punished in front of all the servants. She was tied to a pillar and whipped by the duke himself for failing to care for the young lady. The punishment had no set number of lashes and left the whole mansion frozen with fear.
Watching the whip fall on Jane’s back, Eliano clenched her teeth.
She felt relieved that at least her back wasn’t whipped… and then hated herself for feeling that way.
Isabella cried.
“Father went too far. How can you go to a party like this? He didn’t have to hit your face…”
Damien, who had been silently watching everything with a cold face, turned to Jane.
“What are you standing there for? Didn’t you get whipped enough? Hurry up and get Eliano dressed.”
“Y-Yes, young master…”
Jane answered in a hoarse voice and tried to lift Eliano. She didn’t have the strength, so other maids came to help. Just as Eliano managed to sit up, Damien stepped in and grabbed her chin, turning her face. His green eyes stared at her swollen cheek.
“No bruises. Put on heavy makeup.”
The maids bowed slightly to show they understood. Damien let go of Eliano’s chin and whispered,
“Your eyes… You should hide that look from Father. It’s too rebellious.”
“…”
“Foolish girl.”
He muttered the words and signalled the maids to take her upstairs. As they helped Eliano up the stairs, Isabella turned to Damien in frustration.
“Brother, how can she go to a party like this? She’ll collapse for sure!”
“Didn’t you hear Father? He said if she collapses, let it be in the palace.”
Just as Isabella was about to scream in anger, the maids cried out.
“My lady! My lady! Please wake up!”
They were shaking Eliano’s unconscious body in panic. They were terrified that if they couldn’t get her ready, they’d be whipped like Jane.
Damien quickly went up the stairs and shoved one of the maids aside. With a short scream, the maid tumbled down the steps.
“Are you crazy?! She fainted because she’s sick! Are you trying to kill her?!”
He shouted in fury. The maids, who had been trying to wake Eliano by shaking her, trembled in fear.
Watching from below, Miller clicked his tongue. They don’t even get along, but look at him overreacting.
He thought no one dies just from being shaken.
“Is your brain as useless as your master? Go get the physician, now!!”
Damien’s roar echoed through the mansion.
Eliano was moved to her room and examined by the family doctor.
Damien spoke in a cold voice.
“Make her better immediately.”
“I’ll do my best, young master, but… it won’t be easy right away.”
Emma, the doctor, answered politely—but was cursing inside. How could anyone cure a fever overnight? Even with medicine, it would take at least two days.
“You think I don’t know that? I meant do it as fast as possible!”
“But attending the party today is…”
“I know! I’ll talk to Father. Just do your job!”
Damien snapped at the doctor for no reason. He even told Isabella, who had been watching with worry, to go get ready for the banquet. He looked at his sister lying still, eyes closed and pale, and ground his teeth.
“So weak…”
He muttered under his breath and watched as Emma gave Eliano some medicine. She mixed a few treatments, including a fever reducer, and made Eliano drink them. She gave Jane instructions before leaving. Only then did Damien leave the room as well.
The moment he left, Eliano opened her eyes. She had just pretended to faint—everyone believed it.
Her weak body had gotten sick the moment she slept with the window open.
She hadn’t planned to get this sick, though.
Eliano tried to sit up, but had no strength.
Jane, who had brought a fresh towel, rushed to her.
“My lady, are you okay?”
“Help me sit up.”
Jane gently helped her up. Eliano let out a dry cough.
“You should lie down again…”
“I’m sorry… for what happened to you.”
Eliano forced her tired eyes open and said quietly. Jane tilted her head, then waved her hands quickly.
“You didn’t hit me, my lady. And the duke was right… I didn’t take good care of you. I should’ve checked the window. I’m so sorry. You must be in pain. It’s all my fault.”
Jane didn’t realize Eliano had gotten sick on purpose. Her guilty expression made Eliano stare at her quietly, then say,
“On the table… that Ella balm… cough…”
“Oh, yes! I’ll put some on your face.”
“That’s not what I meant…”
Jane was already opening the jar and scooping some out. As the cool ointment touched her cheek, Eliano continued.
“I meant you should use it.”
“Huh?”
Jane’s hand froze for a second, then she slowly resumed.
“No way! I couldn’t possibly… This is too precious for someone like me. I’ll just finish putting it on you.”
“It does help… Take it with you after. I want you to have it.”
Eliano wanted to give Jane something as a reward.
“B-but…”
Jane looked conflicted. The balm was too valuable for her. But her back still throbbed from the whipping.
She remembered how Eliano had endured this kind of punishment many times before—and her heart ached.
“That’s an order. Make sure you use it. If there’s any left, do what you want with it. It must hurt… And you can’t let it scar.”
Eliano’s head was spinning. The medicine was taking effect.
She thought she heard Jane saying thank you, but it all sounded distant.
Still, she couldn’t fall asleep just yet.
“Jane, I need… to write a letter… Before that, cold water…”
“You can’t have cold water, my lady. I’ll bring warm water instead.”
Jane quickly brought the drink.
Eliano drank and slapped her cheeks to stay awake.
Jane placed a small table in front of her, then set a letter sheet on it.
She opened an ink bottle, dipped the pen, and gave it to Eliano.
Eliano’s hand kept losing strength, but she held on and slowly wrote, one word at a time.
Her eyelids felt like they weighed a ton.
“This… to the Howard family… Don’t let Father… find out. And this letter…”
She barely finished her sentence.
Jane held two letters in her hands.
“Don’t worry, my lady. I’ll deliver them secretly—no one will know.”
Hearing Jane’s voice, Eliano finally drifted into deep sleep.
Poor Jane and is this before or after she went to meet Howard ? Is the story supposed be jumbled time wise ?
