Chapter 20. Who Is Worrying About Who?
âGet your face out of here.â
Daniel pushed away Dominic, who looked excited about the new âguestâ coming to take his place.
âWhoa!â
Dominic stumbled back.
âOh, are you okay, Dominic?â
Frida asked with concern.
Daniel was a little annoyed by her worry for Dominic, but he didnât say anything. Pretending to be a polite nobleman was never going to last long anyway. It wasnât even a very good mask. He tried to remember all those lessons about respect and manners, but they were fading. Maybe he really did hit his head hard three years ago. But he didnât care anymore, and it was all because of Frida, who kept crossing lines and shaking up his life.
Daniel sat carelessly on the desk, arms crossed. Dominic stood up straighter and tried not to smile.
âI was waiting to see how long youâd pretend,â Dominic thought.
Danielâs voice was dry and cold.
âWhether heâs a rat or a noble, the emperor sent him. We have to keep him for now.â
âWe should hire more servants now that we have a steward for the castle,â
Frida said.
âDo as you want,â
Daniel replied.
âBaron Boild should stay in the castle for now. There isnât a proper house for him outside.â
âThatâs fine,â
Daniel said.
He called Dominic over.
âWhen the ‘rat’ arrives, just watch him. Donât stop him from sending letters. Let the Empress Dowager think heâs doing a good job.â
âYes, my lord.â
âNow that we have a noble steward, stop helping in the castle. Go focus on training the mercenaries.â
âYes, sir.â
Frida looked a little sad as Dominic agreed so quickly.
Daniel looked at Frida, who was wrapped up in clothes from head to toe. If sheâd sent a letter saying she was sick, shouldnât she be staying in bed instead of running outside? But maybe this new job would keep her inside the castle for a few days.
âIn two months, Iâll hold the knighting ceremony. Make it as fancy and extravagant as possible. Give it to Baron Boild as his first job, and you just watch.â
âFancy… and extravagant?â
Frida asked, surprised.
âYes. Make the uniforms, flags, and saddles all as flashy as possible.â
âAre you trying to make us a laughingstock?â
Dominic complained.
Daniel waved his hand to shut him up.
âKeep the new steward so busy he canât know whatâs happening outside the castle. If you want to delay news of the road construction reaching the royal family, this is the way.â
Frida finally understood and nodded.
âAh… okay. I understand.â
âThatâs all I have to say. You can go.â
As Frida left, Muriel held the door for her. Daniel called out,
âSir Rosivalt, you stay.â
Muriel smiled at Frida, even though she felt nervous inside.
âIs today the day I finally pay for hitting the Duke?â Muriel thought.
But Daniel just stared at Murielâs sword for a while, sitting on his desk.
âWhat does he want?â
After a long silence, Daniel pointed to her sword with his chin.
âIs that sword âKoldarâ?â
Muriel nodded.
âYes. Itâs the Rosivalt family sword, Koldar. The first emperor gave it to my ancestor.â
âI heard you have to win a duel to own that sword.â
Muriel explained,
âYes, but only people with Rosivalt blood can challenge for it.â
âItâs too good for a knight who became a nursemaid,â
Daniel said, but without any meanness.
Muriel had no answer. He wasnât wrong.
âHow did someone like you end up guarding the Harkbourne family?â
Muriel bit her lip to hide her annoyance.
âThe count helped me a lot. I wanted to repay him, but all he wanted was for me to protect his only daughter.â
Muriel hesitated, then spoke again.
âIâm worried about Lady Frida. Sheâs doing too much because we donât have enough help.â
âWasnât the count supposed to have three daughters? Two died young, right?â
âYes. They both died at sixteen, from the same sickness as Lady Frida.â
âDid they really die from sickness?â
Daniel sounded like he was talking about strangers, not people he knew. Muriel felt her voice turn cold.
âYes. They looked just like Lady Frida except for their eye color.â
âIs it really possible to die just for having pale skin? Just unlucky, I guess.â
Daniel shrugged. Muriel was angry. She wanted to shout,
âDo you know how hard Fridaâs life is? She canât go in the sun, wear pretty clothes, or even see well anymore. For three years, she cared for you while you were unconscious! And now you say itâs just bad luck?â
But she kept her feelings inside.
Daniel continued,
âAre there any Rosivalts who died young?â
âOf course. My younger brother, and some cousins.â
âAnd they all had red-brown hair and gray eyes, right?â
âYes.â
âSo by your logic, you should have the same disease.â
âWhat…?â
Daniel stood up, the room feeling smaller as he walked closer.
âThe Harkbourne and Rosivalt families look the same to meâlight hair, similar eyes, some died young.â
âBut Lady Fridaââ
âIf you died suddenly tonight, wouldnât that make Lady Frida the lucky one for living longer than her knight?â
Daniel looked cold and uncaring.
âStop worrying about my wife. Why not try your own luck for once?â
âMy luck?â
âYes, luck. If you want to beat me in a duel, youâll need luck more than skill. Even though I havenât held a sword in three years.â
Danielâs eyes gleamed.
âIf you win, Iâll grant you any wish. Anything, no conditions.â
Muriel was shocked.
âAnything?â
Daniel nodded, a sly smile on his face.
âBut if I win… Iâll take Koldar for myself.â
Daniel was doing push-ups, counting out loud.
âFifty-four, fifty-five…â
His left arm was stronger now than his right. Suddenly, there was a knock on the wall. He finished at sixty and wiped his forehead.
There was another knock, and Daniel walked to the door.
He opened it to find Frida, who turned away quickly when she saw he was shirtless.
âWhy… why arenât you wearing clothes?â
âAre you surprised? You took care of me for three years, so I thought youâd be used to my body.â
âBut you werenât awake then…â
Daniel shrugged and pulled on his shirt.
âWhat brings you here? I thought youâd never come near this door.â
âIs it true youâre dueling Muriel tomorrow?â
âYes.â
Frida sounded worried.
âMuriel isnât just any knight. Sheâs the strongest in her family and was almost made leader of the imperial knights.â
Frida looked up at him with big, anxious eyes.
âI was just worried you didnât knowâŚâ
Daniel moved closer, step by step, until Fridaâs back hit the wall. He put his hand over her head.
She didnât notice his eyes turning red with excitement.
âDidnât you hear the rumors about your husband?â
