Episode 7-Â
âExcuse me⌠have you seen a young woman pass by here?â
Estella didnât answerâshe just stared at him. So he kept talking.
âSheâs⌠um⌠pale, pretty, cute⌠and she was holding an appleâŚ!â
Estella quietly listened to his rambling description, then calmly asked,
âWho exactly are you looking for?â
âHuh? What?â
âYour sister?â
âAhâŚâ
The man looked flustered but quickly nodded.
 âY-Yes. Thatâs right⌠my sister⌠she forgot somethingâŚâ
âI see.â
Estella replied flatly, showing no emotion. The man carefully asked again,
 âHave you seen her?â
âYes.â
Estella casually pointed in a direction.
 âShe went that way.â
Without even thanking her, the man immediately ran off in the direction she pointedâ
which was completely opposite from where the woman with the apple had actually gone.
Estella stood still and watched him disappear into the alley, then clicked her tongue.
 âThey donât even look alike.â
And he dared to say she was his sister.
Estella glanced toward the alley where the woman had gone.
âI shouldâve taken just one apple.â
In the end, her steps turned toward the path the apple-giving woman had taken.
****
Estella had good instincts.
The proof? Just as she caught up to the woman, the man suddenly appeared again.
âKa, Kamila!â
Yes, Estella’s instincts were definitely sharp.
âHuff⌠huff⌠Kamila⌠Iâve been looking all over for youâŚâ
âI gave him the wrong directions, and yet he still got here quickly.â
âKamila, huff⌠huff⌠please, just talk to me for a second, okay?â
âI told youâI donât want to talk to you!â
Estella quickly stepped between them.
The man had reached out his hand toward Kamila, and Estella smacked it away just in time, shielding her.
âUnwanted physical contact without consent is a crime, you know.â
Her calm warning made the man scowl.
âA crime?! Who do you think you areâwait. Youâre that woman who gave me the wrong directions!â
Not worth answering.
Estella ignored him and leaned toward Kamila to speak softly.
âYou should go.â
âHuh?â
âThink of it as paying me back for the apple earlier. Iâll handle things here.â
âButâŚâ
The man tried to shove Estella aside and grabbed Kamilaâs arm again.
âWhere do you think youâre going?! Kamila! Talk to me!â
Estella lightly kicked the back of his knee.
The man stumbled, and she grabbed him by the collar and yanked him backward.
Whooshâ! Thud!
âOw!â
The man hit the ground in an instant, and Kamila stood frozen, mouth open in shock.
Estella didnât even frown while taking him downâshe made it look effortless.
The man, crumpled like a scarecrow, opened his eyes wide in rage.
âKamila!! Donât tell meâyou hired someone?! You seduced me and now this?!â
âI never seduced you! Iâve told you so many times!â
âThen why did you confess to me?!â
âGiving someone a glass of water on a hot day isnât a confession!â
âBut⌠you gave it just to me!â
âBecause you were the only one delivering to the house at the time!â
âAnd⌠and the bread too! You gave me bread!â
âI told youâour butler gave it to me to pass along because you skipped your meal!â
âYouâre lying!â
Estella sighed and glanced at Kamilaâs shopping basket.
âArenât you in a hurry to deliver those apples?â
Despite the shouting, Estella spoke in a calm voice that made Kamila blink in confusion.
âHuh?â
âLetâs go. I said Iâd take care of this.â
The man got up and yelled again, approaching them.
âWho are you to tell her to go?!â
Estella didnât even turn around. She just flicked her arm back and hit him in the nose.
Thump!
âAhhh!â
The man clutched his nose and fell back down. Estella grabbed him by the collar again.
âYou need to be quiet.â
Heâd already experienced her strength twiceâso the moment she touched him, he started shaking.
âI-I didnât do anything wrong! Kamila is the one who seducedââ
âI said quietly.â
That short threat was enough to shut him up.
ââŚI-I didnât do anything wrongâŚâ he mumbled.
Estella turned to Kamila.
âHurry and go. If you stay, heâll just keep yelling.â
âAh⌠o-okayâŚ! Iâll go get someone!â
âDo what you want.â
Estella gave a slight nod, and Kamila dashed off like a rabbit.
Then Estella, still holding the man by the collar, tried to leave the areaâ
or at least, she tried to.
But thenâ
âKyahhh!â
A scream rang out from behind them, followed by the unmistakable sound of someone tumbling down the stairs.
Estella, who had been dragging the large man along, and the man himself, who was being dragged like a sack, both turned with stunned faces to look at the staircase.
âKa-Kamila?!â
âHuuuuh⌠s-someone help meâŚ!â
It looked like Kamila had fallen down the stairs while trying to run away.
Estella let out a short, helpless laugh at the ridiculous situation.
âThis is unbelievable.â
****
âOww⌠it really hurtsâŚâ
Kamila sniffled and squirmed as the doctor examined her.
âI donât think any bones are broken⌠hmm⌠But sheâll probably have trouble moving around for a while.â
At the doctorâs diagnosis, the butler of the mansion Kamila worked to let out a troubled sigh.
âSniff⌠Iâm so sorryâŚâ
âNo, itâs not your fault. First, letâs focus on getting you treated.â
âOkayâŚâ
The butler turned to Estella.
âYou helped Kamila, didnât you? Thank you so much. And to even carry her all the way hereâŚâ
Since Kamila couldnât walk because of her injury, Estella had no choice but to carry her. She couldnât possibly leave Kamila in the hands of her stalker.
After walking a long way to reach the mansion, the people there had clearly been shockedâ
Because, after all, Estella looked exactly like a ânoblewoman mourning her late husband.â
âI deeply apologize for the trouble weâve caused.â
It was already overwhelming that a noblewoman had helped, and on top of that, she was still in mourning. The butlerâs careful tone showed that he was afraid Kamila might get blamed.
âI really donât know how to repay you⌠goodnessâŚâ
Estella gave him a polite smile.
âItâs fine. I helped because I wanted to.â
Her brief reply seemed to ease the butlerâs expression slightly.
âSigh⌠Still, this is a bit of a problem.â
He wasnât really speaking to Estellaâjust letting out his worries.
âNow that Kamila canât work, Iâll have to find another maidâŚâ
Estellaâs eyes sparkled for a second.
A new maid?
Just then, Kamila suddenly tried to stand up and shouted,
âI-I can still work!â
But the pain in her ankle made her grimace and sit back down.
Seeing that, the butler shook his head.
âNo, you canât. How could you do maid work in that condition? Youâve already been managing this huge house all by yourself.â
Sheâs the only maid in this entire big mansion?
Estella recalled what she had seen while walking through the house.
It mustâve been tough for her to handle all this alone.
Yet, for some reason, Kamila didnât want to give up her job.
âN-no⌠I really canââ
âStop being stubborn. Itâs just not possible. Iâll have to hire someone to fill in for you for a month or two.â
ââŚâŚâ
Kamilaâs eyes welled up with tears. She looked just like a sad little catâpitiful and heartbroken.
But even Estella had to admit: there was no way Kamila could work on that injured foot.
âI’ll report this to the master. Just stay here and rest.â
âSirâŚâ
âIâm only hiring someone temporarilyâfor a few months. Donât worry. You can return once youâre healed.â
ââŚâŚâ
After a few more comforting words, the butler left the room with the doctor.
Now alone with Kamila, Estella spoke.
âYouâve been managing this whole mansion by yourself?â
âNot completely alone⌠The butler helps⌠and the gardener⌠and the head chef tooâŚâ
In other words, she was doing most of it alone.
âItâs a pretty big house. Isnât it hard?â
âIt is⌠but the pay is good. And itâs only really busy for three months. The rest of the time is okay.â
âThree months?â
âYes⌠The master only stays at this mansion during the spring each year.â
Estella had heard that nobles often moved between mansions depending on the season.
But itâs spring right now.
It was just the start of the social season. That made it strange for the master to be here in ChamĂŠron instead of the capital.
âThe master stays at this ChamĂŠron mansion only in the spring.Â
So, if I work hard every day during this season, for the rest of the year I only have to come in once or twice a week.â
Whether she was always this talkative, or if she was just venting because she felt down, Kamila shared a lot.
âEveryone wants to work at this mansion. I know for sure that once they hire a new maid⌠sheâs going to take my placeâŚâ
Apparently, even in the off-season, the salary stayed the same.
Yeah⌠Iâd be nervous too in her position.
Now that she understood the situation, Estella sat beside Kamila.
âKamila.â
Kamila looked at her, her eyes full of worry and hopelessness. Estella carefully spoke.
âHow about⌠I work as your replacement?â
