Episode 15Â
A Special Assignment from the Gearbelg Branch
The next morning, we returned to the Explorerâs Guild, eager to accept our very first job.
For some reason, though, the usually spacious lobby was packed with peopleâit actually felt cramped.
âWow⌠whatâs with all the commotion around the counter?â
âDo you think something happened? Like a fight or an accident?â
That was odd enough, but there was something even more worrying for me.
ââŚThereâs barely any requests left that we can actually take.â
I looked up at the request board, and most of the listings had the words âFor Iron rank and above.â Almost all the available missions were mid-rank or higher.
The few that were left were low-paying chores or boring errands no one wanted.
âMaybe⌠itâs just a slow day,â I muttered, shoulders slumping.
Thatâs when a voice called from behind us.
âNew recruits, are you?â
We turned to see a woman in her forties standing there.
âAhâyes! Um, are you with the guild staff?â
âThatâs right. I saw you wandering around the board for a while and thought maybe you needed help.â
âWell, the thing is⌠there arenât many requests weâre allowed to take at our rank,â I admitted.
I decided to ask the question that had been bothering me.
âUm, why are there so few Copper-rank requests?â
The woman smiled softly, though her expression carried a hint of sympathy.
âThatâs because⌠you donât have any reputation yet. Think about itâif you had a job to give out, would you rather hire a veteran with a proven record, or a complete beginner whoâs never done anything before?â
ââŚYeah, I guess the veteran.â
âExactly. But donât let it discourage you. Everyone starts small. Just take on what you can handle and build trust little by little. Your rank will rise naturally.â
âA friend told me something similar. He said, âA rank isnât something you raiseâitâs something that rises on its own.ââ
She chuckled. âHa, that brings back memories. Havenât heard that saying in a while.â
Her gaze drifted down to my chest.
ââŚOh?â
She was staring at the badge pinned to my jacket.
âThat badge⌠where did you get it? It looks just like one someone I used to know used to wear.â
âOh, this? Gran gave it to me.â
Her eyes widened slightly.
âWaitâyouâre connected to Gran Workshop?â
âYes. I used to work there until recently, and I still help out when I can. Do you know Master Gran?â
âI do. He helped me out a long time ago.â
Her face softened with nostalgia.
âI see. And what kind of work did you do at the workshop?â
She leaned in with curious interest.
âUm⌠I handled core tuning.â
âAt your age?â
âYes. I even tuned the engine core of my own airship.â
âI see⌠If Gran let you handle core tuning, that means youâve got real skill.â
She paused, thinking for a moment.
âHey, I know this is sudden, butâwould you take on a special assignment?â
âEh? A special⌠request?â
âYes. Donât worry, Iâll explain properly. Give me a moment.â
She turned and walked briskly toward the counter.
A few minutes later, she came back holding some documents.
âHereâs the situation,â she began. âA guild-owned transport ship carrying our branchâs chief tuner was attacked by a Deep Cloud Beast. The entire transport line had to be suspended.â
âWhatâ!?â
âThe militaryâs investigating, but thereâs no word yet on when we can reopen the route. Because of that, weâre short on skilled hands.â
âSo youâre looking for someone to replace your tuner?â
âExactly. Core tuning isnât something just anyone can do⌠but thenââ
She looked directly at me and smiled.
ââsomeone who worked under Gran shows up.â
âYou mean⌠you want me to do it?â
âYes. The fact that Gran trusted you is more than enough assurance for me.â
âBut, um⌠all Iâve ever worked on are engine cores for small airships.â
âThatâs perfect. What I need tuned is the engine core of an old shuttle.â
She then explained the details.
The guild had several old transport shuttles in storage. With the recent spike in requests, they were trying to refurbish themâbut just before work began, the Deep Cloud Beast incident happened, leaving the job undone.
âI understand. If youâre fine with me doing it, Iâll take the job.â
âThank you. Youâve just saved us a lot of trouble. Letâs get the paperwork done.â
She turned to a clerk and instructed, âProcess this requestâpriority level one.â
âYes, Branch Chief,â the clerk replied.
âWaitâBranch Chief!?â I blurted out.
The woman chuckled. âAh, right, I never introduced myself. Iâm Meylissa, head of the Gearbelg Branch.â
âIâIâm Sky.â
âAnd Iâm Mile!â
âSky and Mile. Got it.â
Meylissa rose gracefully from her chair.
âThe shuttleâs in the guildâs hangar. Iâll take you there myself. Your own shipâs parked there too, right?â
âYes, maâam. Same hangar.â
âPerfect. Then letâs go.â
âYouâre coming with us?â
âOf course. Iâm the clientâand you two are still new, remember?â
And so, we followed Meylissa to the hangar.
As we walked, she asked casually, âBy the way, which manufacturer built your ship? Donât tell me itâs from Fourth Fleet Industries, is it?â
Her face darkened slightly at the nameâclearly, she didnât think much of them.
âNo, our shipâs an original model built by Master Gran himself.â
ââŚWaitâGranâs original?â
Meylissa froze mid-step, eyes wide.
âThat Granâwho refuses any commission no matter the price unless he approves the pilot personallyâthat Gran?â
Before we could answer, we arrived at the hangar.
âI was going to take you straight to the shuttle, butâŚâ She smiled. âNow I really want to see this so-called original ship of yours.â
âAh, yes! This way.â
I pointed to the silver-white vessel resting quietly at the far end.
âThatâs Luminark.â
âOh my⌠such a unique design,â she murmured.
âYes, maâam. Her nameâs Luminark.â
âLuminark⌠beautiful name.â
She circled the ship, examining every detailârunning her hand along the hull, tapping the frame, peering into the joints. Then, she pulled out a measuring device and scanned the core.
Her expression froze.
ââŚSky. What is this!?â
âEh!? Whatâs wrong!?â Mile and I rushed over.
âThis core⌠its maximum outputâthis is cruiser-class! No, maybe even battleship-class! And the potential growth marginâitâs absurd!â
âUhâŚâ
âAnd this armorâgraviton control frame, isnât it!? Iâve never seen anything like this! The weapon mounts look minimal but thatâs too suspiciousâwait, donât tell meâŚâ
âMeylissaâŚ?â
She caught herself, touching her cheek with a faint blush.
âAh, sorryâI got a little carried away. But still, this is incredible. This isnât just a shipâitâs a monster in disguise. The output limitâs intentionally throttled, right? That was Granâs decision, wasnât it?â
ââŚYes. He said we need to grow into it first.â
âHah. Typical Gran. He always said relying on raw performance makes pilots arrogant before they learn skill.â
Meylissa smiled fondly and gently ran her hand across Luminarkâs smooth hull.
âYou two have a very special ship. Treasure it.â
âOf course. We will!â
I couldnât help but feel proudâit was as if she were praising me directly.
âAll right then,â she said finally. âLetâs go take a look at the shuttle.â
She led us deeper into the hangar, where several large airframes lay beneath dust covers.
Five in totalâold, silent, waiting to be reborn.
