Episode 11
Yurion saw that Rania looked calmer than before, so he decided to press his advantage â time to add a little âstickâ after all that âcarrot.â
âThereâs one more thing I should tell you,â he said smoothly. âThis contractâit follows the standard format used in our world, which means itâs legally binding.â
âBinding?â Rania repeated nervously. âYou mean⊠because you said it canât be changed?â
âWell, yes⊠that too,â he admitted. âBut what I really mean is â if someone breaks the contract, a wanted notice automatically gets sent to all allied or friendly guilds.â
All the color drained from Raniaâs face.
Nightâs Eye was powerful â so powerful that even the Imperial Family didnât dare touch them. No one really knew how far their influence reached.
If she tried to declare this contract invalid, her personal information â name, face, everything â would be distributed across all the dangerous guilds out there.
Even fleeing to another country wouldnât help; theyâd track her down eventually. Unless she somehow changed her entire identity.
Yurion watched her freeze up and added softly, as if apologetic,
âIâm really sorry to say that, but itâs for your own safety. Itâs⊠kind of a formality. Even if both parties agreed to cancel it peacefully, that âwanted noticeâ part canât really be helped. Itâs just⊠custom.â
That part wasnât a lie â but it wasnât the full truth either. In reality, those notices were only used for serious traitors or people whoâd done real damage to the guild.
If Rania ran to the Imperial Palace and begged for help, they might actually protect her. But seeing Yurionâs gentle expression and hearing his reassuring words, she was almost ready to give up fighting it.
Honestly, the terms werenât that bad.
Yurion smiled kindly. âOh, one more thing â the contract period is three years. After that, you can choose to stay or leave. Even if you leave, the guild will still ensure your safety. Nightâs Eye is registered as an Adventurer Guild, after all. Weâre experts at⊠quietly protecting people.â
Three years. Long, but not forever.
Raniaâs mind started spinning faster.
Three years of lending her name, getting paid double, and being rewarded with expensive wine?
If she quit later, sheâd still be âprotected.â And running away seemed impossible anyway. So⊠wasnât it smarter to just play along?
She also didnât believe Enochâs interest in her would last long. Sure, things had gotten⊠awkward after that night, but she figured he was just curious. Heâll get bored soon enough.
âHeâll lose interest once he realizes how ordinary I am,â she thought.
They came from completely different worlds â heâd eventually get tired, like everyone else.
Even her ex, Robel, had changed once she stopped being sweet and started keeping her distance.
âHe liked quiet, obedient types,â she thought, then smirked. âSo maybe I should just act the opposite.â
Rania wasnât naturally meek â not at all. But the idea of irritating someone like Enoch sounded⊠dangerous. The man was the head of an assassin guild, after all.
She sighed. And then there are my customersâŠ
Most of them were older folks who came just to relax. Theyâd be heartbroken if the cafĂ© suddenly became a den of criminals.
Still, after thinking hard, Rania looked up cautiously.
âUm, Yurion?â
âYes, Rania? Please, just call me Yurion,â he said pleasantly. âIâm your assistant now.â
âAh, right. Yurion.â She hesitated. âThis might sound weird, but⊠does the Master ever, you know, kill guild members if theyâre rude to him? Like if someone talks too casually or doesnât tiptoe around him?â
âThat doesnât really sound rude to me,â he replied.
âWell⊠heâs kind of like my boss now, right?â she said seriously.
Yurionâs lips pressed into a line.
It was a fair question â acting too familiar with a boss could look disrespectful.
But truthfully, nobody had ever dared act âtoo casualâ around Enoch before, so he had no data to go on.
Still⊠yesterday, Rania had acted comfortably around him â and Enoch hadnât killed her. In fact, heâd seemed to like it.
Yurion smiled. âYou can act however you want around him.â
âOh! So⊠heâs lenient with his people?â
âWell, there have been a few guild members he personally⊠dealt with,â Yurion admitted. âBut they deserved it.â
â…Dealt with?â Rania echoed, freezing.
Yurion only kept smiling.
The ones Enoch had killed were traitors â infiltrators who murdered younger guild members. After that, Nightâs Eye had started enforcing stricter recruitment rules. But Yurion saw no reason to tell her all that. Sheâd only panic.
Besides, if she got scared, she might stay cautious â and that was safer for everyone.
Even though Enoch seemed soft with her, Yurion didnât trust his moods. He could change at any time.
For now, Yurion just planned to enjoy working under Rania. Compared to other branch leaders, she was gentle, clueless, and harmless â the perfect boss for him to slack off under.
Three quiet years would be bliss. And if she left afterward, oh well. Opportunities like this didnât come twice.
He smiled, looking like an angel, though his thoughts were anything but.
Rania, watching him, felt uneasy â but she dropped the subject.
âJust behave yourself,â she told herself. âOnce he realizes Iâm normal and boring, heâll lose interest.â
She still didnât remember exactly what had happened that night with Enoch â just flashes of warmth, maybe closeness, but nothing clear. It didnât even feel like sheâd slept with him.
Mostly, she just felt uncomfortable. Maybe scared.
But what could she do? If she couldnât change it, sheâd have to accept it and make the best of it.
So she brought up one last question â the one that really bothered her.
âThereâs something else Iâm worried about,â she said quietly. âIf my cafĂ© becomes a guild branch, wonât my regular customers stop coming? Theyâll have nowhere else to goâŠâ
âThatâs fine,â Yurion said easily. âSome of our other branches run normal businesses too. Like Branch 3 on Bellot Street â remember that cafĂ© you visited? Thatâs one of ours.â
âWait â Bellot Street? That nice cafĂ©? That friendly owner⊠heâs a guild member too?â Raniaâs eyes widened.
Yurion just smiled and said nothing.
