Chapter 4
The Contract Ceremony
Once the naming was done, Mio let out a sigh of relief.
His first impression of Meina was a good one. She had a delicate, lovely appearance, yet carried a rich expressiveness and a natural ability to communicate.
That said, since she hadnât shown any of her powers yet, Mio decided to hold off on judging her fully until he had seen more. After all, a companionâs strength determines the future.
âBy the way, Meina, what kind of magic can you use?â
âUm, first of all, I can use telepathy with my Master.â
âWhoa, that sounds pretty handy.â
âAnd then⌠I can use a little bit of my Masterâs magic. Oh, and also, elemental magic.â
âElemental magic?â
âWind, lightning, water, fire, earth, light, and darkness. By the way, Mio, you only have wind-element mana.â
âHuh⌠so Iâve only got one element? Thatâs weak!â
âAnd lastly, thereâs one more ability. But that depends on you, Mio.â
âDepends on me? So I get to choose?â
âYes.â
With a devout expression, Meina raised her right arm.
âGreat Spirit Queen! Upholding the sacred tradition, please allow me to form a new contract with my Master!â
Before Mioâs eyes, a shimmering, mirror-like portal of mysterious green light opened up.
It wasnât very largeâabout thirty centimeters across.
A warm breeze whooshed through, and a single brown sheet of paper drifted down into Meinaâs hand.
According to her, this contract was an unchanging, eternal tradition between the Scarlet Clan and the spirit raceâan indispensable ritual.
Simply put, without forming a contract spirit, one could not be recognized as a true member of the Scarlet family.
And now, the document summoned before them was the contract that would bind the two of them together.
âWhoa, this is getting interesting! Let me see that!â
Unable to suppress his curiosity, Mioâs eyes sparkled as he took the contract.
The rough texture suggested it was made from some kind of ancient animal hide.
But the real eye-catcher wasnât the material itselfâ
(I⌠I canât read this at all! No way any translator could help with this!)
Of course not. It wasnât written in any known languageâjust strange symbols and odd punctuation.
(This must be⌠the language of Belsow.)
Mio swallowed hard.
He had barely managed to scrape by in English classâunderstanding an otherworldly language was nearly impossible.
âUh, MeinaâŚâ
âWhat is it?â
âEmbarrassing as it is⌠I canât read the contract.â
âThe part about the abilities?â
âNo, I mean, literallyâI canât read the language.â
âI see⌠wait, what? HuhâWHAT!?â
Meinaâs brows shot up in shock.
She leaned close to Mio, studying his face in disbelief as if to confirm she hadnât misheard.
âYouâve got to be kidding. Youâre a mage, and you donât know the Belsow common tongueââEsparianâ?â
âCanât be helped! Iâve lived sixteen years in Windsea CastleâIâm completely from the Silphas side!â
ââŚâ
After a moment of silence, Meina muttered softly:
âI seeâŚâ
Then she flew toward the window. In her eyes flickered a faint light of disappointment.
Her gaze swept over the view for several kilometersâthe peaceful neighborhood, the cluster of skyscrapers beyond, and a clear sky untouched by industrial pollution.
And the people running through the streets, busy with their everyday lives.
What she didnât senseâwhat this world lackedâwas magic.
âThe world of the Lost⌠Silphas. No wonder I couldnât sense any mana from the start.â
The unfamiliar world outside her knowledge base filled Meina with a sudden loneliness, and she clutched her chest.
âHey⌠why is my Master in Silphas?â
ââŚâ
Mio frowned but said nothing.
The silence prompted Meina to repeat the question softly:
âWhy are you living in Silphas?â
âWhy do you even ask?â
âBecause itâs weird!â
She turned, fixing her gaze on the stunned boy.
âA mage and the Lost living peacefully together? Thatâs impossible! And how could a mage be born in Silphas? Iâve never heard of that before!â
âNeither have I.â
Mio didnât sound defensiveâjust tired. Lowering the hand that held the contract, he continued:
âI have no idea.â
âWhat do you mean, you donât knowâŚ?â
âItâs the truth. The first time I even heard of magic was thanks to a late-stage chuunibyou case. Todayâs my first day as a mage. Honestly, I canât even tell if any of this is realâor just a dream.â
âPhewâŚâ
Feeling guilty at his dazed expression, Meina sighed, placing her hands on her hips.
âIâm sorry, Mio. I shouldnât have pressed you. Itâs okay if you donât know. What matters is what happens next. For now, letâs complete the contract.â
âHuh? You mean itâs okay? Even though I canât read any of it?â
âItâs fine. Leave it to me.â
Taking a deep breath, Meinaâs tense expression softened into a calm, reassuring smile. Her pure, gentle features glowed with warmth and cheerfulness.
âNo matter the situation, itâs our mission to unconditionally support our Masters! Whatever Mio lacks, Iâll make up for it!â
âMeinaâŚâ
Mio felt a sudden urge to hug herâbut quickly shook his head. She probably couldnât withstand his emotional outburst.
âOkay, hand me the contract. Iâll translate it forââ
And at that momentâ
Fssshhh.
Another contract drifted down from above, passing between their startled gazes before landing softly on the floor.
âHuh?! Why did another one just appear on its own?â
âWaitâdidnât you summon that, Meina?â
âNo. I only called for the first one!â
They looked up.
The magic portal had somehow shifted to the ceiling, glowing with seven colors of light.
Instinctively on guard, Meina stepped back. Her sharp hearing caught something before Mio couldâan explosion-like boom from the other side of the portal.
âHuh? Did you hear that, Meina? Something weirdâsââ
Too late.
A thunderous roar drew closerâand then, hundreds of contracts came pouring down.
âWaaaah! What is this?!â
In the cramped room, there was nowhere to dodge.
Mioâs shocked face disappeared beneath an avalanche of paper.
Meina snapped her fingers, closing the portal just in time.
âMaster! Are you okay?âAhhh! I canât even see you anymore!â
âOver⌠hereâŚâ
A hand reached out from the pile of papers.
After some desperate struggling, Mio finally emerged, panting.
âPhew! I thought I was gonna die! Whatâs with this ridiculous number?!â
âThis is strangeâŚâ
Meina put a hand to her chin, scanning the mountain of contracts.
âThereâs always been a shortage of contracts in the past⌠so why are there so many now? Donât tell me⌠the Scarlet population has collapsed?â
âY-Yeah⌠maybeâŚâ
It must have been as Adelle had saidâthe Scarlet Clan was nearly wiped out.
Cold sweat trickled down Mioâs back. Unsure whether to tell Meina the truth, he decided to play dumb and move on quickly.
âMan, this is a problemâŚâ
He clicked his tongue and scratched the back of his neck.
In this chaotic mess, making a choice was nearly impossible. What should have been a simple ability selection was suddenly a nightmare of indecision.
âRealistically, youâd need five hours to read through them all. Just pick one at random! Itâs not like there are bad abilities mixed in.â
âYou want me to choose randomly for something this important?!â
Even Meina, nodding, seemed oddly unconcerned.
ââŚFine,â Mio sighed. âGuess Iâve got no choice.â
It was all probability anywayâluck-based, like in a game. Heâd gambled plenty of times before.
âAlright, here goes!â
Closing his eyes, Mio thrust his hand into the paper pile, reaching deep until his fingers brushed the farthest sheetâand pulled it out.
âOkay! Letâs make this contract! Letâs finish and become partners!â
âWait, Mio! Donât say that phrâ!â
But she was too late.
The moment he said the words, the keyword had already been spoken.
Instantly, countless rays of light burst from the contract, wrapping them both in brilliance.
âUghâ!â
âAaahhh!â
They shielded their eyes, their feet lifting half a meter off the ground as they floated helplessly.
Thenâ
âWhaâŚ?â
Mioâs heart pounded violently.
He could hear somethingâinside his head.
It wasnât his own voice. It was clearly Meinaâs, who was experiencing the same phenomenon beside him.
(Wait⌠this isnât just a voice. This isâŚ)
It wasnât sound.
It was an eerie, vivid connectionâlike a bridge linking their two hearts, allowing their thoughts, feelings, and emotions to flow together.
This was the telepathic bond unique to a Master and their Contract Spirit.
Within a minute, the glowing contracts dissolved.
As the roomâs brightness returned to normal, Mio exclaimed, âThat was awesome!â
âWith that, the contractâs complete!â
Unable to contain his excitement, he spread his arms wide toward Meina.
âSo? What kind of ability did we get? Something destructive? Or maybeââ
âI donât know. The details and instructions were written on the contractâŚâ
Her flat tone doused his enthusiasm instantly.
âThe activation phrase you used was âLetâs become partners.â After that, the Spirit Queen retrieves the document. To check again, weâd have to search through all the other contracts. Itâll take ages.â
âSorry. I⌠didnât know.â
Seeing his apologetic expression, Meina couldnât stay mad.
Whether by accident or pure recklessness, it was done. She pressed her forehead with a sigh.
âYouâre really impatient, Master⌠Oh well, itâs not an emergency. Iâll go look for it. But until I find it, I wonât be able to manifest for a while. See you later.â
With a snap of her fingers, Meinaâs figure vanished in an instant.
Sheâd left to search for their abilityâor perhaps, as Mio sensed through their telepathic bond, for another reason entirely.
ââŚI made Meina mad. Iâll have to apologize later.â
