Chapter 06
—
âDo you like beer? I had some left in the cold storage, so I brought a few cans.â
Ella shook the cans in her hand like a tambourine as she asked.
âAh⌠Iâve heard of it. Itâs the drink you can usually only get at shops, but now people can enjoy it at home too, right?â
He sounded like one of those rich men who never ate anything unhealthy in his life.
Ella looked at the man doubtfully.
âIs he serious?â
Canned beer was this yearâs hottest trend in the Empire.
âThatâs right, youâre smart, my neighbor.â
âAh! Now that I think about it, we donât even know each otherâs names. May I ask your name?â
He looked startled, as if he thought Ella had called him âneighborâ to mock him in some noble-style way.
âNo. Letâs just not know each otherâs names. We wonât be seeing each other much anyway.â
After all, sheâd soon be leaving this village. She didnât care about her neighborâs name â and she really didnât want to share her own.
âWhat? What do you mean?â
âAs you might know, Iâm about to be kicked out of this house.â
âOh dearâŚâ
Ella opened the beer can with a click and handed it to the man next door. He looked unsure what to say.
âTry it while itâs cold. It tastes good.â
He accepted the can and took a small sip.
âMay I ask⌠how much the loan is?â
âNine hundred eighty-six thousand gold. Oh, and before you misunderstand â Iâm not the one who borrowed it.â
âThen⌠you were scammed?â
âProbably?â
Not wanting to ruin the mood, Ella lightly tapped her can against his.
Clink!
Gulp, gulpâ
âDrinking beer in broad daylight with a man, in my own house⌠this isnât like me. Totally careless.â
Gulp, gulpâ
She drank quickly, trying to cool the anger boiling inside her.
âAhhh!â
Ella let out a satisfied sigh after finishing the whole can in one go. Then, feeling oddly annoyed, she kicked the empty can toward the corner.
âA-Are you okayâŚ?â
The man next door looked nervous, stuttering at her wild behavior.
âWell, somehow itâll work out.â
Maybe it was because someone was finally worrying about her â she couldnât help but smile.
âYeah, itâll all work out. Who knows? Maybe someone walking by will just hand me that nine hundred eighty-six thousand gold!â
The man nodded seriously, then suddenly tilted the can and drank the rest in one shot.
âHey, donât drink so fast!â
Ella knew her own limit well â one can wouldnât make her drunk.
But this man looked like someone who lived off morning dew, and yet he was drinking like that?
âItâs been a long time since I drank. Maybe thatâs why it tastes even better.â
âHave another one.â
âAh, yes.â
He couldnât spit it back out now, so he decided to just continue politely. He then picked up the strange-looking dish she had served earlier.
âIâm not good at cooking, so Iâm not sure what this is.â
The mix of colors didnât look like anything Ella knew.
âItâs tomato egg stir-fry. I followed a recipe from a book. The book said sharing delicious food with your neighbor is a good thing.â
âAh⌠tomato and eggâŚâ
She knew what that was.
Ella looked at the dish doubtfully â it looked almost like the leftovers from her dogâs breakfast.
âThis is supposed to be healthy and delicious, good for breakfast⌠cough.â
He tried a bite and struggled to swallow. His confused eyes looking down at the plate told her everything.
âHe didnât even taste it before bringing it over.â
After barely swallowing, he calmly set down the spoon.
âI followed the book exactly, but whyâŚâ
âHe really thinks things always turn out like in books, huh. What a naive young master.â
âSometimes, even if you do the same thing, it just doesnât taste the same,â Ella said kindly, smiling as she comforted him.
âI see. I didnât know that.â
He smiled awkwardly â a foolish man, but with a dazzlingly bright face.
âAhâ so bright!â
It wasnât just an expression. The sunlight was literally shining off his face.
He quickly leaned to block the light for her, his tall figure casting a shadow over her.
For someone who looked fragile, his broad shoulders actually felt quite dependable.
âHe must have his own reasons for coming here. Living alone in the countryside like this canât be easy. And with that face, weird people will surely approach himâŚâ
Ella thought she should look out for him a little â definitely not because she found him attractive.
âWhy are you staring at my face like that? Is something on it?â
âHuh? M-Me? When did Iâ!â
âNever mind then.â
âA-anyway! You donât look like someone from this village. What brought you here?â
âYou can tell?â he asked with curious eyes.
âMost outsiders come here for country life. You seem like one of them.â
âCountry life, huh⌠something like that.â
âWell, if thereâs anything you donât know, ask me. I may look like this, but Iâm quite the expert around here.â
Ella gestured for him to come closer.
âI have some amazing crops in my yard.â
He nodded eagerly.
âAmazing crops?â
âBokbunja.â
âBokbunjaâŚ? Iâve never heard of it.â
âHe doesnât even know bokbunja?â
In her previous life, people went crazy for anything said to be good for stamina â turning them into drinks, jelly, or wine.
But here, hardly anyone even knew about bokbunja berries.
âThis is an opportunity!â
Right now, she was only supplying a local tea shop, but once she had money, she could start a real business â bokbunja juice, bokbunja jelly, bokbunja wine! The profits would be enormous.
âCompared to that, nine hundred eighty-six thousand gold is nothing!â
Just thinking about it made her grin.
âItâs super tasty and super healthy.â
âReally? Iâm curious now. I care a lot about my health.â
âItâs good for almost everything â itâs delicious, has anti-cancer effects, strengthens bones, heart, and, um⌠menâs vitality⌠I mean, energy! Yes, energy and stamina!â
Ella sounded exactly like a bokbunja saleswoman, passionately listing its benefits.
The man next door watched her, amused.
âAll those long vines there are bokbunja trees. Theyâll be someone elseâs soon, so you can pick as much as you like before I leave.â
She pointed kindly toward the field.
âItâd be nice if someone could taste them before the owner changes.â
And then she thought â
âActually, I should make him try some.â
Following her thought, Ella jumped up.
âI think thereâs some yogurt left in the fridge. Could you pick a few bokbunja berries while I get it?â
âHe doesnât even know how good yogurt with bokbunja is!â
Her eyes sparkled. The man nodded obediently.
âAh, yes. Iâll do that.â
Maybe it was the alcohol, but his cheeks were slightly red as he looked up at her. Seeing that, Ella felt her own face heat up.
When she touched her cheek, it felt as hot as a roasted sweet potato.
âWhat, am I already drunk?â
It had been so long since she chatted so casually with someone.
Sheâd lived in this village for three years, met many people, but never had a friend she could share small talk with. Maybe because all she had left were her memories from her past life â she hadnât felt the need for human relationships.
But now, she realized⌠maybe she did need an ordinary friend like this.
âWell, itâs already too late. Still, meeting him like this is also a kind of fate.â
Ella smiled, deciding that before everything ended, sheâd at least make her rude but charming neighbor taste the best bokbunja yogurt ever.
