Chapter 136
The Forbidden Medicine
Bella sighed softly and shook her head, smiling with a careless ease.
âYou really donât make it easy, do you?â
It didnât sound like she was upset about Cedric dodging her questions. If anything, she looked amusedâlike sheâd never expected real answers in the first place.
âItâs a bit of a shock, honestly. My charms usually work on everyone. This is the first time they havenât.â
âIâm not sure if what you just tried counts as charm,â Cedric replied coolly. âBut Iâll admitâitâs better than pretending to be innocent.â
Bella laughed, a light, teasing sound. âOh, thank you for noticing. I wish everyone were as straightforward as you, Duke. Most people donât appreciate my⊠talents.â
Her smile turned mischievous, wrinkles forming on the bridge of her nose. It was a different kind of beauty from her usual sweet, doll-like faceâbrighter, livelier, and somehow more dangerous.
Cedric realized this was the real Bella Listerwell.
âSo,â he asked, âwas that the only thing you wanted to say to me?â
âWhy? Are you disappointed? I wouldnât mind getting a little more personal if youâd like.â
âIâll have to decline.â
âDonât be so sure. You never know what might happen.â
Before Cedric could respond, a voice called out from behind them.
âDuke Kailas! Over here! Iâve saved you a seatâcome join us!â
It was one of his overenthusiastic acquaintances, a man who treated him like both idol and master. Cedric didnât particularly enjoy his company, but ignoring him would only cause gossip, so he walked over. Bella followed beside him.
As the two approached, all eyes turned their way. Whispers and stifled smiles spread through the crowd like wildfire. Surprise, curiosity, and the thrill of new gossip gleamed in every gaze.
âOh my, isnât that Bella Listerwell?â
âSheâs as stunning as ever. The most handsome man and the most beautiful woman in societyâwhat a sight!â
âCongratulations again on your engagement, Lady Bella. Didnât young Lord Cheslow come with you today?â
Bella smiled sweetly, back in her usual innocent persona. âJames is a little late. Heâs been so busy with his lessons lately.â
âHow could he let such a lovely fiancĂ©e come alone?â
âWell, sheâs not alone,â someone joked. âThe Duke of Kailas is with her!â
The glances that followed were loadedâeach one silently asking the same question: Whatâs going on between them?
Cedric neither confirmed nor denied anything. He simply smiled politely, knowing full well that his silence would only fuel the rumors.
Then, from the distance, Daphne appearedâwalking hand in hand with Edgar. Bella spotted her first.
She immediately set down her drink and rose from her seat.
âIâm sorry, everyone. I think itâs better if I step out now.â
âWhat? Why? Stay a little longer!â
âIf I stay, Iâll just make Miss Daphne uncomfortable,â she said gently. âThank you for your hospitality, everyone. I hope to see you again soon.â
Her final glance was for Cedric. Her words were polite, but her eyes made it clearâhe was the one she wanted to see again.
To others, it looked like a wistful, almost tragic expression. But Cedric only gave a curt nod and took another sip of his drink. While he did, Bella curtsied gracefully and walked away, her figure quickly disappearing into the crowd.
The moment she left, the men nearby swarmed toward Cedric like vultures circling prey. None dared ask outrightâhe was still Duke Kailas, after allâbut their eyes were filled with questions.
âSo, you know Lady Listerwell, then? First time Iâve seen the two of you together.â
That was question oneâtesting the waters.
âSheâs even more beautiful up close,â another man added. âUsually, no woman can outshine you, Duke, but standing beside herâwell, sheâs quite dazzling.â
That was question twoâprobing for a reaction.
And then came the boldest of them all. âWell, no matter how grand an engagement may be, everyone knows nothingâs certain until the wedding. Ha-ha!â
That was question threeâan open invitation to scandal.
Cedric said nothing. His lips stayed sealed, his face unreadable. Neither confirming nor denying anything was, perhaps, the cruelest answer of all.
Then Edgar appeared, Daphne on his arm. As much as Cedric hated to admit it, Edgar often showed up at the best possible time.
âThere you are. Iâve been looking all over for you.â
âI wasnât hiding.â
âPlease. I could spot your head anywhere, but today I couldnât see it at all.â
âSeems your eyesightâs not as good as you think.â
Though his words were sharp, Cedricâs expression softened with genuine amusementâsomething rare for him.
âIf youâll excuse me,â he said, standing. âI should go greet Count Dawson with this one.â
He offered a brief, polite smile to the onlookers, a final courtesy to the people who had been gossiping about him moments ago. Then he walked away.
As he did, his mind lingered on Bella.
Was mentioning Harriet just baitâor the real goal?
Did Bella bring up Harriet to get closer to him? Or was she simply trying to stir up trouble out of jealousy?
If it was the latter, she wasnât worth his time. But if it was the former⊠he needed to know why.
Bella Listerwell ignored me for months after I turned her down once. Why approach me now? he thought. Either sheâs jealous of Harrietâs rise, or someone sent herâwith something to gain.
If someone was behind her, he had to find out who. There were several possible suspects, but he needed proof before striking back.
Patience, he told himself. If she wants something, sheâll come back. And when she does⊠Iâll be ready.
He decided to leave a simple trap: a personal invitation to an upcoming party. That should be enough to draw her in.

Cedric thought no more of itâuntil Jeremiah brought her up the next day.
âI heard you talking with that young lady, Bella, yesterday,â she said casually as they shared tea. Her tone was mild, but her eyes demanded an answer.
âIt wasnât anything important,â Cedric replied.
Jeremiah only smiled, watching him. She didnât need to speak to him to know what she wantedâdetails.
He sighed. âCountess Arens introduced her.â
âThat woman wouldnât do that without a reason,â Jeremiah mused. âSo the young lady must have used her to get close to you.â
Cedric only lifted a shoulder in a small shrug.
âAnd whatâs her purpose?â
âI donât know yet.â
âHow intriguing.â Jeremiah sipped her tea thoughtfully. But her curiosity didnât sound casual anymoreâit was genuine.
âWhat do you think of her? They say sheâs the most beautiful woman in the social circle.â
Cedric smirked faintly. âWell, outward beauty doesnât mean much. Some mushrooms look lovely but are poisonous. Others look strange but make good medicine.â
Jeremiah chuckled. âTrue. But beauty is still a powerful weapon. And you, of all people, should know how to use it.â
âThank you for giving me mine,â Cedric said dryly. âItâs been useful at times.â
He wasnât offended. Why would he be? It was trueâhe often used his looks as a weapon when needed.
His mother laughed softly. âI sometimes pity the girls who fall for you. Just remember, that weapon doesnât work on everyone. And when it doesnât, things tend to get⊠complicated.â
âI know,â Cedric said quietly.
But as he lifted his teacup, Jeremiahâs warning echoed in his mindâand Harrietâs face flashed before him.
If only she liked me for my looks, he thought bitterly.
She did show signs of interest sometimesâblushing, avoiding his eyesâbut other times she looked at him with the calm fondness of a business partner, not a womanâs affection. It was maddening.
Still, her trust in him was growing. And as long as she relied on him, that was enoughâfor now.
Eventually, he told himself, eventually sheâll see me differently.
He hid a smile behind his teacupâjust as the door to the tearoom burst open.
Herbert, his butler, hurried inside and bent close to whisper, âSir Benjamin Nelson requests an urgent audience.â
Cedricâs eyes sharpened. There was only one reason the physician would rush here: the medicine Harriet had asked him to analyze.
âSend him in.â
Moments later, Benjamin entered, slightly out of breath. He bowed first to Jeremiah, then to Cedric, silently asking if it was all right to speak in her presence. Cedric nodded.
The doctor took a small brown vial from his bagâthe same one Harriet had given Cedricâand said, his voice tense,
âYour Grace, where did the young lady say she got this medicine?â
âWhy? Is something wrong?â
Benjaminâs eyes hardened. âYes, very wrong. This drug isnât legally approved for sale anywhere in the empire!â
