Chapter 8
Accepting Fate
Lin Suianās head hurt terribly.
He could no longer make a sound.
His knees had gone numb and stiff from kneeling on the cold floor.
After a long while, he slowly lifted his head and looked at Qin You with reddened eyes.
His throat burned painfully, but not a single word came out.
Qin You decided to end things quickly.
Without any emotion, he took out his phone and began dialing a number.
āIāll call the hospital right now and cancel your motherās bed.ā
āAs for you⦠get out.ā
Qin You sneered coldly.
āOnce you offend me, how good do you think your future life will be?ā
The last trace of hope inside Lin Suian was completely extinguished.
Qin You had never intended to let him go.
From beginning to end, this had been a trap.
And he was the pitiful prey trapped tightly inside it, unable to escape no matter how hard he struggled.
Lin Suianās eyes slowly dimmed.
Grinding his teeth, he trembled as he spoke:
āDonāt call⦠Iāll agree.ā
But he still could not understand.
What exactly was so special about him that someone like Shi Yushen would want him?
Why him?
Qin Youās expression immediately softened again.
He reached out as if wanting to wipe away the tears at the corner of Lin Suianās eyes, but Lin Suian avoided him.
Then Qin You sighed softly.
āSui Sui, donāt hate me. If thereās anyone to blameā¦ā
He paused, crushing the cigarette beneath his shoe.
Then he spoke meaningfully.
āItās because you were born with such a beautiful face⦠but such terrible fate.ā
Lin Suianās face turned pale as he lost himself in thought.
When he was little, his mother had once mentioned something to him.
She had once gone to a fortune teller.
The man was blind, but supposedly very accurate when reading fate.
He said Lin Suian carried the fate of a cursed lonely star.
That in this life, he was destined to lose family, be separated from loved ones, suffer ruin and heartbreak.
Andā
He would spend his entire life entangled with men.
His mother had become furious at the time.
She said her child was a boy, so how could he possibly end up entangled with men?
The fortune teller had to be a liar.
Everything he said was nonsense.
But nowā
That old joke had slowly become reality.
His father had run away with another woman, leaving behind mountains of debt.
His mother worked herself to exhaustion trying to repay it all, until she eventually became gravely ill.
And himā¦
Lin Suian smiled bitterly before pulling himself back from his thoughts.
He suddenly grabbed Qin Youās arm.
āI only have one request left. Can you let me call my mother⦠just to hear her voice?ā
Ever since coming here with Qin You, he had never seen his mother again.
Even occasional greetings had become rare.
Qin You had transferred her to another hospital, but never told Lin Suian the address.
Only he knew how to contact her.
āSui Sui, your mother is doing fine. Thereās no need to contact her.ā
āWhen people are sick, their hearts become fragile. If you call to check on her, sheāll only end up worrying about you.ā
Qin You spoke confidently, but his words sounded unbearably cold.
Still, perhaps to comfort him slightly, he did not completely refuse.
He left a small bit of hope behind.
āOnce your life settles down, and after you finish the college entrance exams and get into a good university, then you can share the good news with your mother.ā
āBy then, her illness should be cured too.ā
At that moment, Lin Suian finally seemed to accept his fate a little.
He stopped resisting.
Letting go of Qin Youās arm, he felt as though knives were cutting through his heart.
āā¦Okay.ā
Even though the distance between him and Qin You was less than a meterā
Their relationship could never return to how it once was.
Before leaving, Qin You gave him one final sentence.
āGo prepare yourself. Youāre going to see Shi Yushen.ā
