Midnight Trip to the Toilet

This is a story from when I was a child.

During summer vacation, I went to stay alone at my grandmother’s house.

During the day, everything was fine.
But in the evening, I noticed that the bathroom light wouldn’t turn on—the bulb had burned out.

It would have been ideal if there had been a spare, but unfortunately there wasn’t. And since it was a countryside house, we couldn’t go buy one immediately. So I spent the night without electricity.
To help me, my grandmother had placed a flashlight by the bathroom door, knowing I’d likely need to go in the middle of the night.

As expected, I woke up in the middle of the night needing to use the bathroom.

I walked down the dim hallway, with only a small night light at my feet, terrified of the darkness, and finally reached the bathroom.

I picked up the flashlight, slowly opened the door, quickly did my business, washed my hands at the sink beside the toilet, and prepared to leave.

Because I was scared, I opened the door very slowly.

It was only open about three centimeters when I peeked outside with just my right eye.

And then—illuminated by the faint hallway light—a dark, male face appeared right in front of mine.

I realized his left eye and my right eye were staring directly at each other.

I was so terrified that I couldn’t even speak.

ā€œW-wrongā€¦ā€

The man muttered in a low, growling voice, and in that instant, my consciousness faded.

The next morning, my grandmother found me collapsed inside the bathroom and called an ambulance.

I was said to have severe heatstroke and had to stay in the hospital for several days.

But honestly, I don’t think it was just heatstroke.
I believe it was because I saw that man’s face.

Since then, even though I’ve visited my grandmother’s house, I never went to the bathroom at night—and I never saw that man’s face again.

Also… he said, ā€œNo, wrong.ā€ But I wonder… what was wrong?
