Chapter 53
 Moonlit Hiking (Part 3)
It seemed weâd rested a bit too long. Counting the train ride home, it was about time to start heading down.
After all, we still had school tomorrow.
The way back was downhill, the slope was gentle, and though itâd be easier, we still had to hurry before it got dark.
âTaiyĹ-san, lookâover there.â
Following Tsukiyoâs voice, I saw a couple in their forties or fifties. The manâprobably her husbandâwas sitting on the ground, looking exhausted.
Something mustâve happened.
âIs everything all right?â
I called out to the woman, who didnât seem to be in distress.
âOh, sorry about this. We ran out of drinks. My husband insisted on pushing himself, and now heâs worn out⌠If you donât mind, could we have a little water?â
Tsukiyo quickly took her thermos from her backpack, poured some sports drink into a cup, and handed it to the man.
He drank it in one gulp.
âPhewâŚâ
He seemed calmer nowâheâd probably recover with a bit more rest. I also had a spare bottle of juice, so I handed it to the wife.
âThank you so much!â
âNot at allâitâs only natural to help each other out.â
In a place like this, mutual aid is a must. Thatâs just how it isâeveryone looks out for each other.
Then the wife spoke again, this time with a gentle smile.
âAre you two high school students?â
âYes, maâam. We came from the city. Since itâs the weekend, we thought weâd go hiking.â
âOh, thatâs lovely. So⌠does that mean you two are a couple?â
âUhââ âUhââ
Both of us hesitated.
Technically, this was supposed to be a date, so the correct answer shouldâve been yes.
But⌠Iâd never confessed, nor been confessed to. Could I really say yes just like that?
âY-Yes, we are.â
Tsukiyo answered, but her voice wavered just slightly.
The wife seemed to sense the awkward atmosphere and clapped her hands together.
âOh my, did you two have a little fight?â
âN-No, nothing like that.â
âWhen that happens, you should try the âTen Words Game.ââ
âThe⌠Ten Words Game?â
Tsukiyo tilted her head. The woman nodded.
âItâs simpleâyou each say nine good things about the other, and the tenth one is, âThatâs why I love you.â My husband and I always do it when we argue.â
Nine compliments and then a confession!? That last oneâs a huge hurdle!
And of course, knowing Tsukiyo, she was bound to jump right into it.
âTaiyĹ-san, letâs do it!â
âAhaha⌠haaa.â
Under the wifeâs cheerful supervision, we faced each other. My face was already burning.
âAll right, the boyfriend should start,â she said.
Fine. Iâll just say the nine compliments and⌠somehow get through that tenth part.
âGive me a second.â
Tsukiyo rummaged in her pocket, then looked up with a bright smile. âOkay, go ahead!â
Man, this is embarrassing. But itâs a date, right? I might as well do it seriously.
âTsukiyo is⌠first, sheâs very considerate. She helped me a lot with preparations today.â
âYes.â
âSecond, she has beautiful hair. Itâs so well cared forâitâs soft and elegant.â
âThird, sheâs kind to her friends. When theyâre sad, she comforts them; when theyâre happy, she celebrates with them.â
âFourth, sheâs smart, but never arrogantâshe uses her knowledge to help others.â
â…Uu.â
Tsukiyo covered her face with her hands, making a tiny squeak. Five more to go.
âFifth, sheâs a great cook. Lunch today was delicious.â
âSixth, sheâs really cute in her gesturesâI could watch her all day.â
âSeventh, her voice is beautiful. I could listen to it forever.â
âUm⌠w-waitâŚâ
âEighth, sheâs kind to children. Sheâll definitely make a wonderful bride someday.â
âNinth, because sheâs the most beautiful girl I know.â
âTenth⌠thatâs why Iâuh⌠I l-love you, Tsukiyoâ!?â
âUuuuuu! Uoooooohhh!â
Tsukiyo dropped to her knees, rolling on the ground with her hands over her face, her ears and cheeks blazing red.
âYouâre so passionate, young man!â the wife said with a laugh. âBut you know, âten wordsâ means short phrases, dear.â
âWaitâwhat!? You mean short ones!?â
Now Iâm the one whoâs dying of embarrassment.
But really, Tsukiyo just has too many good qualitiesâcoming up with ten was easy.
Judging by her reaction though⌠maybe I went overboard.
After about ten minutes, she finally managed to stand up, still flustered.
âTaiyĹ-san, that was way too powerful! Were you trying to kill me!?â
âNo! I meant every word!â
âThatâs not the point! Geez!â
She raised her fist in mock protestâstill impossibly cute even when she was angry.
Now it was her turn. I had no idea what sheâd sayâthere might not even be ten good things about me! Maybe sheâd end up listing stuff like âhas handsâ or âhas hair.â
She began.
âUm, TaiyĹ-san⌠you have such a kind personality.â
Okay, thatâs⌠unexpectedly embarrassing. If she keeps this up for ten⌠I might die too.
Her smile softened as she continued.
âYour eyes are beautiful, your nose is straight⌠your face is really handsome.â
âWait, what?â
âYouâve got a nice build, youâre a natural leader, always at the center of things.â
âHold on.â
âYouâre so fast, athletic⌠like a prince to me. Thatâs why I lââ
âWho exactly are you talking about!?â
âY-You, of course! The âprinceâ part was just⌠you knowâŚâ
âThe first one was fine, but the restâno way! Thatâs totally Seiya!â
âMy brotherâs got a terrible personality!â
âI know that!!â
âAhahaha!â
The wife burst into loud laughter, clapping her hands.
Tsukiyo and I could only sit there, completely red-faced and speechless.
âYou two are adorable,â she said warmly. âSuch a lovely young couple.â
âAhâ!â âAhâ!â
We both quickly looked away, hearts pounding.
Being told that⌠made it impossible not to think about it.
What Amatsu said yesterday⌠what this woman just said nowâŚ
Does Tsukiyo feel that way about me? And me, about her
On the way back down, silence hung between us. Neither of us knew what to say.
âTaiyĹ-san.â
âY-Yeah!?â
It was Tsukiyo who broke the silence.
âToday was⌠really fun.â
Her smile was so radiant, it almost hurt to look at.
Ah⌠I forgot one more thing.
The eleventh complimentâshe has the most beautiful smile.
Then she pulled out her smartphone and started tapping.
Suddenly, my own voice came out of it:
âFirst, sheâs considerate. Second, her hair is beautifulâsoft, elegant, and shiningâŚâ
âTsukiyo-san!?â
âLetâs head home, TaiyĹ-san!â
And soâthe twelfth thingâsheâs a little devil who always keeps me off balance.
But maybe thatâs fine for now.
For now, I just want to enjoy this everyday life with Tsukiyo.
And as we walked together down the mountain trail, September quietly drew to a close.
