Chapter 10
Lost Child
Iâm honestly not a kind person.
I avoid crowds whenever I can, and I donât even help kittens abandoned in cardboard boxes. Iâve learned to draw a line between what I can do and what I canât.
So even if a little girl is crying right in front of me, I have to carefully judge whether or not I should step in. If I can handle it, Iâll help her myself; if I canât, Iâll call the police and have them take her into protective custody.
Iâm aware of how I lookâif Iâm not careful, I could easily give people the wrong impression, and things might end badly. That wouldnât make anyone happy.
So I decided to call the only person I could rely on.
It wouldnât be a problem if she refused; I was expecting a refusal anyway.
I dialed the number on my phone.
âHello!â
She picked up on the very first ring.
Well, it probably wasnât because of kindness⊠more like she was already on her phone. Weâre both smartphone addicts.
âUm, if you have time, could youââ
âTell me where you are. Iâll come right away.â
Not even ten minutes later, my best friendâs little sister, Tsukiyo Kaminagi, arrived.
Today she was wearing a casual pink shirt and a skirt⊠She looks cute no matter what she wearsâseriously amazing. The clothes themselves are nothing special, but⊠beauty is powerful. I wish Iâd brought my camera. Maybe my phone will have to do.
She was out of breath, probably from running. The sight of her sweaty face was beautiful, but it also made me feel guilty.
âSorry for calling you out like this.â
âI wasnât busy! So, this is the girl, right?â
It had already been close to twenty minutes since I found the crying little girl. If I looked like Tsukiyoâs brotherâhandsome enoughâI probably couldâve approached her myself without any issue⊠but no, not me.
Tsukiyo crouched down and spoke gently to the child. After a bit of back-and-forth, I joined in.
âShe says she doesnât know where her home is.â
As I suspected, she was a lost child, about three years old. We got her name but of course she didnât know her address.
âItâs okay. Big sister and big brother will take you home.â
As expected, Tsukiyo was great with kids. Her part-time job and her love of children probably combine to make her really good at this.
I chimed in from time to time, trying to gather information. Hopefully we could find her parents before heading to the police box.
âHey, sheâs on social media! This must be her!â
âReally!?â
While scrolling on my phone, I came across a post about a missing child. Information really does spread fast. I contacted the mother who posted it and arranged to meet in front of the police box just to be safe.
âMama!â
At the police box, under the officerâs supervision, the little girl leapt into her motherâs arms. Phew, case closed.
The mother bowed deeply to us.
âThank you both so much. Sorry to interrupt your date.â
âDate!?â
Tsukiyoâs eyes went wide and she flailed in panic. Cute reaction, but I should clarify before she gets embarrassed.
âShe and I are just friends. Nothing like that.â
âEek! Big sisterâs scary.â
âHuh?â
The girlâs face went pale like sheâd seen a demon. I turned to look but⊠all I saw was Tsukiyoâs usual sweet smile. What did she see just now?
After parting ways with the girl and her mother, we started heading home.
Everything was normal, except⊠Tsukiyo seemed a little grumpy.
âAre you⊠mad at me?â
âIâm not mad. Weâre not anything special, after all.â
That was a loaded way of saying it. Itâs true weâre not more than friends, but stillâŠ
Oh well. At least I should thank her.
âBut seriously, thank you for coming. You saved me.â
âEh? Ah, sure.â
âSince it was a little girl, I couldnât exactly call your brother⊠Youâre probably the girl I can rely on the most, Tsukiyo. You really helped.â
Tsukiyo suddenly stopped walking. I stopped too. Wondering why, I kept talking.
âIâm really bad at talking to girls, so I canât ask just anyone. Thatâs why youâre special. You picked up on the first ring⊠really, thank you.â
ââŠâ
No response. Maybe I overstepped?
For someone as popular with guys as Tsukiyo, being called âspecialâ probably doesnât mean much.
It might even sound like harassment⊠Did I just creep her out? Feeling uneasy, I nervously peeked at her face.
âHehehe⊠special. Iâm special, huh, eheheâŠâ
It was a smile Iâd never seen before. She pressed both hands to her cheeks and started squirming.
That kind of reactionâif anything it made me blush. No way. No⊠way.
I think⊠I might be falling for you, Taiyo-san.
No, no, that canât be it.
But do people make a face like that when itâs just affectionâŠ?
Even if Tsukiyo does like me, it canât be romantic⊠it just canâtâŠ
âIâll, uh, repay you somehow! What do you want?â
âEh?â
This wasnât going anywhere.
I hurriedly changed the subject. Tsukiyoâs expression returned to normal and she thought for a moment.
âThenâŠâ
âYeah?â
âGo on a date with me right now.â
âYeah⊠Wait, what!?â
