chapter 10
And just like that, the dining hall fell into a cold silence.
The maids who had stayed behind to serve stood still, pretending they hadnât heard anything.
âOh? Whatâs with this brat?â
I stared straight at Sasha, who had suddenly called me âolder sister.â
âActing cute, are you?â
The childlike smile vanished from my face, replaced by the expression of someone who had just seen something they shouldnât have.
This was my first time meeting that kid, yet the moment Jeff left the dining hall, he started calling me âolder sisterâ like we were close. It was strange. I couldnât understand why he was acting like that.
âOlder sister?â
As if it wasnât absurd enough already, Sasha called me that again.
This time, he even tilted his head slightly and gave a faint smile.
âNo matter how you look at it, he seems older than me⌠and heâs calling me âolder sisterâ?â
Why did that bright smile make him seem like such a little devil?
âWhy are you acting friendly? Iâve never seen you before.â
I put on a sulky face, staying on guard.
âThat is because His Majesty ordered me to get along closely with Your Highness.â
Despite my cold reaction, Sasha remained polite and elegant. For a moment, it even felt as if a golden glow flickered around him.
âI donât remember ordering that?â
Recalling Jeff warning Sasha earlier only made things more confusing.
âAre you good at studying?â
I asked bluntly, resting my chin on my hand.
âI am lacking compared to Your Highnessâs brilliance, but I have studied many disciplines to be of help.â
He answered with the respectful tone of a noble addressing royalty. At some point, Sasha had stopped speaking casually and switched to formal speech.
âWhat is with this kid?â
He had switched back to calling me âYour Highness.â
âFirst it was âolder sister,â now itâs âYour HighnessââŚ.â
What on earth was going on? My head filled with question marks.
âStill⌠I feel like Iâve met him somewhere before.â
I lost my appetite, placing my hands on my knees and clenching them into fists. Even as I stared at him suspiciously, Sasha kept smiling calmly.
That only made it feel more unsettling.
âHeâs clearly just a kidâthereâs no way I met him when I was emperor.â
He looked only a few years older than the princessâat most the same age as Carlisle or maybe a year older.
Which meant that when I was emperor, he hadnât even been born yet.
âSo why does he feel familiar?â
That only made it more confusing.
âOh, right. My father only called you by nameâŚâ
I adjusted my posture and changed the subject.
âWhich family are you from?â
I needed to know more about him.
âMy family is Vladimir.â
Sasha answered flawlessly.
âThe Vladimir family⌠a prestigious house known for producing many strategists.â
I was secretly surprised.
âTheyâre also known for being especially proud among nobles.â
But⌠did that family have red hair?
If I remembered correctly, most of them had brown hair.
âI see. So what will you do when you come for lessons?â
âI believe I will study alongside you, Your Highness.â
Watching Sasha smile as he said that, I could guess Jeffâs intentions.
âFleurâs children are just playmates, but this one is meant for political purposes?â
Early education was one thing, but teaching state affairs already?
âJeff⌠youâre not completely insane after all.â
I couldnât help but smile in satisfaction.
âBy the way, what kind of children are the ones from Fleur that His Majesty mentioned earlier?â
Sasha asked again shortly after.
âTheyâve probably finished eating and are resting by now. Iâll introduce you.â
I couldnât even begin to imagine how noisy things would get once they met. Still, if I thought of it as gaining another âstabilizerâ to keep the rowdy ones in check, it wasnât a bad deal.
âBring Carlisle andâugh, I meanâRonowe, and Beris to the garden.â
âYes, Your Highness.â
I beckoned the maids over and gave my order.
âLetâs go to the garden.â
I got down from my chair and headed out with Sasha. There was no reason to stay in the dining hall anymore.
âYes, Your Highness.â
Sasha followed with a gentle smile.
* * *
The garden where we agreed to meet was, as expected of the imperial palace, beautifully landscaped.
At the center was a small pond with an arched bridge over it, and elegant rose bushes and decorations scattered throughout enhanced the scenery.
The pavilion where we were meeting had a glass roof at the far end of the pond, surrounded by flower beds and fountains.
âKyah~!â
Ronowe and Beris immediately started running around, while Carlisle sat inside the pavilion with a stack of books, absorbed in reading.
I walked alongside Sasha, watching them from a distance.
âYour Highness!â
âItâs Her Highness!â
Ronowe was the first to notice me and ran over to hug me. Soon after, Carlisle got up and approached from behind Beris.
They all looked happy to see me again.
âThis is Ronowe, Beris, and Carlisle.â
I introduced them, glancing at Sasha and Carlisle facing each other.
âTheyâre my companions. All from the Fleur family.â
âNice to meet you!â
The Fleur siblings greeted him brightly.
âIâm Ronowe Masha Fleur!â
She lifted her dress slightly and greeted him in an elegant yet cute manner.
âI am Carlisle Fascinelli Bergamot.â
Beris hid shyly behind Ronowe, while Carlisle placed a hand over his chest and greeted properly.
âI am Sasha Dave Vladimir, of the Vladimir family, here to assist Your Highness in your studies.â
Sasha introduced himself with a smile.
âYour Highness! We were playing hide-and-seek!â
âPlay with us!â
The Fleur siblings immediately clung to me, asking me to join.
âLetâs play together! Big brother, letâs keep playing hide-and-seek.â
Beris even tugged at Carlisle.
ââŚAlright.â
Unable to refuse, Carlisle agreed.
âYour Highness, youâll play too, right?â
Ronowe looked at me with sparkling eyes, and I hesitated.
âDo I have to be âitâ again?â
Before we could start, Beris complained tearfully that he was tired of being âit.â
âThen Iâll be âitâ first.â
Sasha volunteered in his place.
âStart!â
The Fleur siblings shouted and ran off to hide.
âI never said Iâd playâŚ?â
Still, somehow, I ended up joining and quickly went to hide behind a large bush.
âPhewâŚâ
Just as I sighed in reliefâ
âShh.â
â!â
Carlisle, who had been hiding there all along, suddenly came close and put a finger to his lips.
âAre you okay?â
âY-Yes.â
âThat startled me.â
I almost screamed.
âLetâs hide together. Sasha wonât come this far.â
âOkay.â
I sat down, hoping the game would end soon.
âYour Highness.â
âHm?â
Carlisle spoke quietly.
âIf itâs studying, I can teach you too. Iâll learn and help you.â
I was taken aback.
âWhat is he suddenly talking about?â
After thinking about itâ
âOh⌠maybe he likes teaching?â
Considering how lively Ronowe and Beris were, it made sense.
âHe must be helping them study.â
I smiled.
âGood kid.â
âAlright. Thank you.â
I smiled as brightly as I could.
âWaaah! I got caught!â
Just then, Ronoweâs voice rang out.
âHaha, I found you.â
Sasha laughed cheerfully, while Ronowe pouted.
âBeris is here too!â
She dragged Beris out from hiding.
âOlder sister, thatâs unfair!â
âWhatâs unfair?!â
They started bickering, and Sasha spoke loudly:
âThen the remaining ones are⌠Her Highness and Lord Carlisle. Where could they be?â
I tried to stay perfectly still.
But my legs hurt, and I shifted slightlyâ
Rustle.
âDonât come hereâŚ!â
Footsteps approached.
I held my breath, covering my mouth.
âCould you be hereâŚ?â
Just as Sasha got closeâ
I grabbed Carlisleâs wrist and ran.
âY-Your Highness?!â
âI canât get caught like this!â
I shouted, running with all my strength.
âRun!â
