“Lord Danzo! The Hokage requests you to attend an emergency meeting immediately!”
Inside the Root base, an ANBU ninja serving the Hokage respectfully bowed toward Danzo, who was sitting behind his desk.
“I understand. I’ll go now.”
Danzo, whose face was half-wrapped in bandages, replied calmly.
After the ANBU left, Danzo immediately called for his trusted subordinate, Aburame Ryoma.
“Have the events from last night been fully investigated?”
Danzo lightly tapped the armrest with his bandaged right hand.
That arm—transplanted with Hashirama cells—was still faintly aching.
“Yes, Lord Danzo.” Ryoma reported in a low voice. “Last night, a mysterious masked ninja attacked the Hyuga clan compound. Hyuga Hizashi was severely injured and sent to the Konoha hospital. Hyuga Hiashi was also lightly injured, and the Cloud Village envoy has gone missing.”
“The Hyuga clan?”
Danzo’s visible eye sharpened when he heard about the masked attacker. His brow furrowed slightly.
He couldn’t help but think of the Akatsuki organization, which also seemed to have a masked figure among them.
But after that battle four years ago, Akatsuki had gone into hiding and stopped recruiting. Danzo’s men had no further intelligence.
They could only rely on spies in Amegakure to gather fragments of information.
“Was it Akatsuki?” Danzo’s eye flashed with cold intent. The regret of not obtaining the Rinnegan still lingered in his mind.
“Unlikely,” Ryoma analyzed. “Our spies in Amegakure have reported nothing. If Akatsuki wanted revenge, their first target would be Hanzo of the Salamander. There is no reason for them to attack the Hyuga clan.”
Four years ago, during that joint operation, Danzo and Hanzo led Root forces and forced Yahiko to his death, triggering Nagato’s awakening of the Rinnegan.
Now Akatsuki only had a few remnants left, hiding and building power in Amegakure.
If they wanted revenge, their first target would clearly be Hanzo.
“Let’s go. Don’t keep the Hokage waiting.”
Danzo slowly stood up and hid his bandaged right arm beneath his robe.
Ryoma followed behind him.
Hokage Building – Meeting Room
The atmosphere was heavy, filled with smoke.
When Danzo entered with a calm face, all the Konoha high-ranking officials were already present.
Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, sat in the main seat wearing the Hokage robe.
On the left sat advisors Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane.
On the right sat Hyuga Hiashi, who was injured.
An ANBU wearing a white cat mask stood behind the Hokage.
“Danzo, you are a bit late,” Homura said, adjusting his glasses while observing him.
“Root has many affairs,” Danzo replied simply and sat down beside Hiashi.
“All right, everyone is here.”
Hiruzen put down his documents, took a puff from his pipe, and said to Kakashi behind him:
“Give this report to Danzo.”
“Yes!” The silver-haired ANBU bowed slightly and walked over with the document.
Danzo narrowed his visible eye as he read the report.
Hiruzen continued:
“Last night, a mysterious attacker killed the Cloud Village envoy and left the body at the Hyuga compound. It looks like an attempt to frame the Hyuga clan. Fortunately, Hiashi discovered it in time and acted.”
“But the enemy was strong. Hizashi was severely injured, and Hiashi also suffered injuries.”
“I sent ANBU to pursue, but they lost him. The enemy seems very familiar with Konoha’s barrier system. This is serious. I’ve already ordered the barrier team and ANBU to investigate.”
Hiruzen exhaled smoke.
Of course, Hiashi could not truthfully report that he himself had killed the Cloud Village envoy.
He had pushed everything onto a mysterious ninja.
Even the fact that the Hyuga clan suffered one severely injured and one lightly injured was enough explanation for Konoha’s leadership.
Even if Cloud Village questioned it, Konoha’s higher-ups could not blame the Hyuga clan—otherwise, how would other clans view the village?
“Third Hokage,” Hiashi added, “this morning when I returned to the clan, I found my study had been infiltrated.”
“Hm?”
Hiruzen frowned deeply.
“So he escaped ANBU pursuit and came back again…”
“He knows Konoha’s terrain very well.”
Hiruzen began thinking.
His first thought was missing-nin from recent years.
But none seemed strong enough.
In today’s Konoha, Orochimaru and Uchiha Itachi had not yet defected. Among recorded missing-nin, the strongest was Hiruzen believed to be Hiruzen’s former researcher, Hiruko.
“Does he have any specific combat traits?” Danzo asked.
Hiashi carefully chose his words.
“His taijutsu is extremely strong, and he seems to understand the Hyuga Gentle Fist.”
“He also used a type of jutsu we’ve never seen before—chakra compressed into a sphere with extremely destructive power.”
“Chakra… condensed into a sphere?”
Hiruzen immediately thought of the Fourth Hokage’s Rasengan.
But Hiashi continued:
“It is similar to the Fourth Hokage’s Rasengan, but much larger. Its color is darker, and its destructive power is greater. Hizashi was hit by it and nearly died.”
“What is his goal?” Koharu asked.
“Is he trying to start a war between Cloud Village and Konoha?”
Hiashi replied calmly:
“Perhaps.”
But in his heart, he also did not understand the attacker’s true goal.
The Cloud envoy had been trying to kidnap Hinata. If Hiashi had not stopped him, the Hyuga clan would now be the target of suspicion.
“I will have Jiraiya and other wandering ninjas investigate this mysterious person,” Hiruzen concluded.
The meeting ended without results.
The village was placed on higher alert, and messages were sent to Jiraiya and others.
After the Meeting
Only Danzo remained in the room.
“Hiashi.”
Danzo’s single eye turned cold as he looked at Hiruzen.
“Three years after the Nine-Tails incident, the village is attacked again. Is this your so-called achievement as Hokage?”
“The village lacks high-level combat power. We should hand Naruto over to Root…”
“Enough!”
Hiruzen interrupted sharply.
“That is Minato’s child!”
“Exactly because he is Minato’s child, he should be trained properly!”
“Enough!”
Hiruzen stood firm.
“I AM THE HOKAGE, DANZO!”
Danzo’s expression darkened.
“Hiashi! You will regret this!”
He turned and stormed out, slamming the door.
BANG!
