Chapter 17
The Wolvesâ Persuasion
Ella, being a herbivore beastman, was naturally wary of wolf beastmen.
Jania thought she was fine since she had gotten used to Rupert, but maybe Noahâs rude words earlier had scared her again.
Then Jania remembered something important from what Ella had said.
âWait⌠Mama? Do you mean your mother?â
âUh⌠uh-huh?â
âYou said you donât remember your name, but you remember your mom?â
âUh-huh. I remember Mama.â
Ella nodded quickly, but she avoided Janiaâs eyes like she was lying.
Jania looked at her suspiciously.
âIf this is the timeline, then it must be when she ran away from her kingdomâŚâ
No one knew why Princess Ella had run away. The novel never gave detailsâit was only mentioned once when Elena later reflected on her foolish childhood.
âBut maybe now sheâs starting to miss her family?â
Janiaâs heart ached a little as she looked at Ella.
âElla, donât you miss your mom?â
âO-ohâŚâ
Ellaâs eyes shook nervously. Then, instead of answering, she shook her head hard.
âNo⌠I donât want to see her.â
âWhy?â
ââŚI donât know.â
âYou donât know?â
âUh-huh.â
And then she shut her mouth. Jania frowned in confusion.
âDid something happen back then?â
In the story, Elena had a good relationship with her royal family.
Noah had assumed later that her sadness was because they all died when the kingdom fell. But was there another reason why a child so young would run away and end up here?
Jania sighed and changed the subject.
âElla, if we go downstairs, Iâll need to wrap the blanket around you more tightly. It might feel uncomfortable. Is that okay?â
âUh-huh.â
âReally? Iâll tie it even tighter than now.â
âItâs fine!â
Jania wasnât sure if Ella really understood, but she wrapped her up anyway.
She would have to hold her the whole time so the blanket wouldnât slip.
âAfter this, Iâll have to get her some clothes. Maybe I can ask the neighbors, or just make some myself.â
The thought made her uneasy. Her neighbors had always treated her normally, even though she sometimes worried they might sense something strange about her. Still, they didnât seem like bad people.
âAlright, letâs go down.â
âYeah!â
Ella, wrapped like a little doll in the blanket, snuggled into Janiaâs arms.
Her white hair and pale skin made her look even more like a delicate toy. Jania chuckled and carried her downstairs.
âSorry for keeping you waiting.â
Noah and Felix were sitting politely on the sofa, while Rupert lay stretched out beside them. Jania glanced at Rupert, then sat opposite Noah and Felix.
âIâd like to offer you tea, but Ella has been so restlessâŚâ
âItâs fine,â Noah said, shaking his head.
But his blue eyes glared at Ella disapprovingly.
Ella froze like a kitten hissing at a predator, then narrowed her eyes and glared back at him.
âHow did that beastman end up here?â Noah asked.
âAh, Rupert brought her home.â
âMy father?â
Noah looked at Rupert in surprise.
Rupert just ignored him with a bored face.
âWell, Roengrin is basically our ally anyway,â Noah said.
Jania tilted her head.
The Roengrin kingdom was destroyed by humans, and nobody even tried to help back then. Ally? Really?
âHm. Noah and Rupert treat her differently. Noah seems hostile from the start, while Rupert at least saved her.â
Jania patted Ellaâs back to calm her down.
âI plan to return her once we find her family. Could you help with that?â
âOf course, if youâre the one asking, Lady Jania.â
Noah said with a bright smile. But it felt more like he just wanted to get rid of Ella.
âNo!â
A loud voice echoed through the room, startling everyoneâincluding Rupert.
Ella shouted again, her little body trembling.
âNo! I wonât go! Iâll stay with Jania!â
âEllaâŚâ
âNooo!â
Her scream was so loud that Janiaâs ears rang painfully. She winced and covered one ear with her free hand, still holding Ella tightly with the other.
âIâm not going back! Iâm not going back!â
âElla, calm down. Please?â
But Ella kept yelling, refusing to be soothed. Jania rubbed her back desperately.
âShe hates the idea of going back this much? What on earth happened to her familyâŚ?â
Jania finally whispered softly,
âIâll stay with you. Always, okay?â
âReally?â
âReally.â
Ellaâs sobs slowed, and she finally relaxed in Janiaâs arms. Jania let out a long sigh, then looked back at Noah.
âIâm sorry. Weâll⌠discuss this another time.â
âVery well,â Noah said calmly.
At least Ella hadnât caught on to their meaning this time.
But Jania still had something important to say.
âI have no intention of leaving this place.â
âDo you have a reason?â Noah asked.
âNo, but⌠this is my home.â
âHmm.â
He tilted his head like he found it strange. Jania frowned, feeling uneasy.
âWhy? Is there something wrong with this place?â
âDo you know what this forest is called?â
âThis forestâŚ?â
âYes.â
Jania hesitated. She didnât want to admit she didnât know.
Noah answered for her.
âThis is called the âCursed Forest.ââ
âWhat?!â
Janiaâs eyes went wide.
âThe Cursed Forest?! Here?!â
She remembered the eerie feeling that night under the full moon when she went looking for Rupert. She had thought it was just because of the storm and the coldâŚ
âBut I never had any problems here. There arenât even dangerous animalsâŚâ
âThatâs because the forest weakens predators. Most carnivores canât endure it. Thatâs why you hardly see any.â
âReallyâŚ?â
Janiaâs eyes widened, and she turned to Rupert. But he looked perfectly fine, lying there calmly.
Noah chuckled. âDonât worry. My father is far beyond being affected by something like this.â
âOh⌠right.â
Indeed, Rupert had never seemed weakenedâexcept when Jania had first found him injured.
âAre you⌠worried about my father?â
Noah teased, his eyes gleaming.
âWell, weâve lived together, so I guess I care a littleâŚâ
âAnd you even put a leash on him.â
âWhat? Thatâs notâ!â
Jania blushed. If anyone overheard that, theyâd misunderstand everything!
But Noah only smiled slyly.
âAnyway, Iâm not leaving,â Jania repeated firmly.
âIs that so?â
âYes.â
She wanted him to know she wouldnât budgeânot about leaving, and definitely not about marrying Rupert.
Noah studied her for a moment, then glanced at Rupert before speaking again.
âThereâs something you must know, Lady Jania.â
âWhat is it?â
âYour true identity.â
âMy⌠true identity?â
Jania blinked, completely confused.
Hmm it seems like Ella just pretending having an amnesia đ§ and push through Noah đ Make her your stepmother haha đ
