Chapter 7
From the back of the classroom, the low murmuring of boys could be heard â small whispers at first, but soon they grew louder.
âWow⌠no wayâŚâ
âIs that real?â
The mix of shock and laughter spread quickly.
When Jamie slowly turned to look around, dozens of eyes were already fixed on her â and those looks werenât friendly.
They felt sharp, judgmental⌠cruel.
âAre you talking about me?â
More snickers rippled through the room.
âYou in the back â stop whispering and pay attention!â
The teacherâs voice cut across the laughter, but the students only pretended to behave, ducking behind their textbooks.
The air, however, was still buzzing with amusement.
Jamieâs nerves were on fire, her stomach twisting with anxiety.
âWhat on earth is going onâŚ?â
The teacher continued, oblivious.
âAlright, thatâs it for today! Letâs go over the quiz results from last time.â
She began walking down the aisles, handing out graded papers.
âJamie! Youâre the only one who got a perfect score this time! Everyone, give her a round of applause!â
A few lazy claps followed.
From the front row, a girl with perfectly styled blonde hair â Meredith Sinclair, the cheer captain â turned around and stared at her.
Meredith was the kind of girl who looked like sheâd stepped right out of an Instagram feed â beautiful, smart, and the most popular student in school.
âWhy is she looking at me like that? Weâve never even talked.â
Jamie blinked, confused, but Meredith just smiled sweetly and turned back around.
Then came more whispers behind her.
âDid you hear? She got a perfect score.â
âMakes sense â sheâs probably âgoodâ at other kinds of biology too.â
The mocking tone made Jamieâs stomach churn.
Now she was sure â they were talking about her.
She was about to spin around and say something when the bell rang.
The boys jumped up, snickering as they hurried out before she could react.
Jamie sighed and started packing up her binder and tumbler.
Just then, someone tapped her shoulder.
âHm?â
She turned around to see a tall, skinny boy â Todd â his shoulders hunched, glasses slipping down his nose.
âJ-JamieâŚâ
âTodd? Whatâs up?â
Todd was her classmate â the one no one ever wanted as a lab partner in biology.
Jamie had volunteered to work with him once out of pity, and since then, heâd been awkwardly hovering around her.
âI-I was sitting right next to you⌠y-you didnât notice?â
âGuess not. Anyway, whatâs wrong?â
He looked around nervously, beads of sweat forming on his nose.
âI-is it t-true? You and the q-q-quarterbackâŚ?â
âWhat?â
âW-whatâs going on between you two?!â
âWhat are you talking about? Me and Noah didnâtââ
Todd suddenly thrust his phone right in front of her face.
The screen showed a photo â Noah, asleep, holding her in his arms like she was something precious.
Jamieâs eyes widened.
She blinked, hoping sheâd imagined it. But no â the picture was crystal clear.
The two of them looked like one of those Pinterest â#couplegoalsâ photos.
âWhere⌠where did you get this?â
Todd hesitated.
âI said, where?!â
âItâit was posted on the account classclown757.â
Jamieâs blood ran cold.
Classclown757 was a social media page infamous at Preston â known for spreading gossip and secrets about students.
That meant⌠everyone at school had already seen it.
She quickly opened the app on her phone and searched for the post.
There it was â a caption under the photo:

classclown757:
BREAKING NEWS! Last night, Preston Academyâs golden boy, our quarterback N, scored a âtouchdownâ with a nerdy girl at the football building (wink wink). With photo proof like this, no way he can deny it!
After months of mystery around our starâs love life, the truth is finally out â and itâs scandalous.
Remember, Preston Academy â Classclown is everywhere, yet nowhere. đ

The comment section was overflowing â and Jamie didnât even want to scroll down. She knew they wouldnât be kind.
âWho even took that photoâŚ?â
She sighed, rubbing her temples.
âI donât know whatâs worse â that this photoâs spreading, or that you found out before I did.â
âD-donât change the subject! Iâm asking you â what are you two?!â
Jamie let out a disbelieving laugh, planting her hands on her hips.
âTodd, are you serious right now? You freaked out dissecting a frog and cut my arm with the scalpel, remember? And I still helped you finish the lab! And now youâre interrogating me instead of asking if Iâm okay?â
âS-sorryâŚâ
He deflated immediately, shoulders drooping.
âNothing happened between me and Noah. We got locked inside the football building last night. It was freezing, so we hugged so we wouldnât get hypothermia. Thatâs it.â
âR-really?â
He stared at her with wide, worried brown eyes.
âReally.â
Todd nodded slowly â though his face still looked unconvinced.
âO-okay⌠Iâll believe you.â
âYou donât have to believe me. Itâs just the truth!â
Jamieâs voice rose in frustration.
âA-alright, donât yell⌠youâre scary when you do that.â
âIâm not yelling! Justâugh, whatever. Just tell everyone the rumorâs not true, okay? You can do that much as a classmate, right?â
âC-classmateâŚâ
Todd made a strange squeaky noise and suddenly bolted out of the classroom.
Jamie sighed.
âHeâs⌠really something.â
He was awkward and often teased for it, but he wasnât a bad person â just weirdly intense sometimes.
Occasionally heâd say things like, âI-Iâm above average, right? Girls only avoid me because Iâm intimidating.â
It always left people speechless.
Shaking her head, Jamie gathered her things and stepped into the hallway.

The moment she appeared, the atmosphere changed.
Whistles.
Whispers.
Everyone staring.
âWhat? Whatâs going on?â
One confused student asked another, who showed them their phone.
âNo way⌠her and Noah?!â
Jamie could feel the gossip spreading like wildfire.
She spun around sharply, glaring at the group that had been whispering.
The students flinched, startled.
Jamie took a deep breath and said loud enough for everyone to hear:
âNothing happened between me and Noah! We got trapped in the building by accident, and it was freezing, so we just hugged to stay warm!â
âYeah, suuure you did.â
One boy smirked, nodding sarcastically.
Laughter erupted across the hallway.
A few voices murmured things like,
âGuys, thatâs enough. This is getting mean.â
âPoor thingâŚâ
But most of them just watched, amused.
And through the crowd, Jamie caught the eyes of her roommate â Valentina.
Her expression wavered uncertainly.
