Chapter 20
** Don’t Move**
Just then, his phone suddenly rang.
Rong Ci happened to look over and saw the caller ID on the phone lying on the table: “Baby.”
Rong Ci thought she no longer cared.
But after all, she had loved him for so many years â how could she completely let go just like that?
The two characters stung her eyes, and she quickly looked away.
Feng Tingshen looked up and noticed the pain in her eyes, but he didn’t hesitate. He answered the call right in front of her, his tone gentle: “What’s wrong?”
Feng Jingxin also noticed Feng Tingshen’s side of things.
In her memory, Feng Tingshen only showed such a gentle side when he was with Lin Wu.
For a moment, she forgot that Rong Ci was there. She asked happily, “Daddy, is it Aunt Wu Wu?”
Feng Tingshen said coolly, “Yes.”
Feng Jingxin was about to say she wanted to talk to Aunt Wu Wu too, but then she remembered that Rong Ci was there. Knowing that her mother didn’t like Lin Wu, she swallowed the words.
But her good mood was affected.
She furrowed her little brow and couldn’t help thinking: It would be so nice if Mommy could just get along with Aunt Wu Wu.
Whatever Lin Wu said on the other end made Feng Tingshen frown with concern. He didn’t even finish his breakfast before leaving in a hurry.
Seeing Feng Tingshen rush off like that, Feng Jingxin also grew worried.
But because Rong Ci was there, she didn’t ask.
She also lost her appetite for breakfast. She tugged at Rong Ci and stood up: “Mommy, I’m done. Let’s hurry and leave.”
Feng Jingxin didn’t say it out loud, but Rong Ci saw all her reactions.
She knew that the reason she was in such a hurry to leave was so she could find out what was going on with Lin Wu as soon as possible.
But she said nothing.
She said, “You haven’t eaten much. Take some to eat in the car.”
“No, I’m not hungryâ”
Rong Ci paused.
She didn’t insist.
Once in the car, Feng Jingxin didn’t wait a single second. As soon as she sat down in the back, she immediately sent Lin Wu a message.
Rong Ci saw it but said nothing.
A moment later, Lin Wu replied, saying it was just a fever and a cold, nothing serious.
But Lin Wu’s voice still sounded a bit hoarse. Feng Jingxin was still very worried. She immediately sent a message saying she would go see her after school in the afternoon.
As she sent the message, Feng Jingxin felt a little guilty.
She hadn’t eaten Rong Ci’s cooking in a long time. She had already planned to have dinner with Rong Ci tonight.
But luckily, she hadn’t had a chance to mention it yet.
With that thought, she secretly glanced at Rong Ci in the driver’s seat. Seeing that Rong Ci hadn’t noticed what she was doing, she felt relieved.
At the school, Feng Jingxin hugged Rong Ci affectionately: “Mommy, I’m going in now.”
“Yes.”
Feng Jingxin didn’t notice Rong Ci’s coolness. She bounced into the school.
Not long after returning to the company, Rong Ci received word that Feng Tingshen had something urgent come up. The meeting originally scheduled for 10 AM was postponed to the afternoon.
Feng Tingshen’s “something urgent” was actually going to personally take care of the sick Lin Wu.
Rong Ci didn’t react much. She focused on her work.
Around 2 PM, Feng Tingshen must have returned to the company, because Jiang Zhe notified everyone that the meeting would be at 3 PM and also asked her to brew a cup of coffee for Feng Tingshen.
During the meeting, after Feng Tingshen entered the conference room, Rong Ci’s hands paused on her keyboard.
He had changed his clothes.
They weren’t the ones he had worn that morning.
He had gone to see Lin Wu in the morning. Lin Wu was sick. They might not have actually done anything, but it was also very possible that Feng Tingshen, feeling sorry for Lin Wu, had gone to bed with her to soothe her to sleepâŚ
Thinking this, her mind wandered for a moment.
Perhaps thinking that she was inappropriately swooning over him regardless of the setting, when she snapped out of it, she found Feng Tingshen looking at her coldly.
Remembering his tenderness and care for Lin Wu, and his impatience and coldness toward her, Rong Ci clenched her hands into fists and looked away.
Not long after the meeting ended, Jiang Zhe came to find her and said that her handover work was almost complete. She didn’t need to come to the company starting tomorrow.
Rong Ci: “I understand.”
Even if Jiang Zhe hadn’t mentioned it, after she finished the little bit of work she had left, she would have gone to him herself to bring it up.
Since he came in person, it saved her a trip.
Jiang Zhe hadn’t expected Rong Ci to agree so readily.
“You⌔
Rong Ci extended her hand: “Thank you for your help over the years.”
Jiang Zhe hadn’t snapped out of his surprise yet, but he still extended his hand and shook hers: “You’re too kind.”
Rong Ci packed up her things and left.
Jiang Zhe couldn’t believe that Rong Ci had really just left like that.
“What are you spacing out for?” Cheng Yuan patted his shoulder.
“Rong Ci has left the company.”
Cheng Yuan was taken aback: “Really?”
She actually left the company? Why did he find that so hard to believe?
He snorted: “She’s gone now, but that doesn’t mean she won’t try to come back. Just wait. In no time, she’ll be back with Old Madam Feng’s help.”
Jiang Zhe didn’t respond.
Although it seemed incredible, based on the feeling Rong Ci had given him lately, he felt that Rong Ci was serious.
After leaving the Feng Group, Rong Ci went straight home.
Presumably, Feng Tingshen’s mind was back on Lin Wu. For the next two days, she didn’t receive any more calls from Feng Jingxin.
Late the following night, Chu Zilan ran a fever. Rong Ci quickly closed her book, grabbed her car keys, and left.
It had been raining all day, and at this hour, the rain showed no sign of letting up.
Chu Zilan lived in the old town. At this time, there were few people and few cars on the road.
Rong Ci bought some medicine at a pharmacy near Chu Zilan’s neighborhood. Just as she closed her umbrella and was about to get back into her car, the passenger door suddenly opened, and a tall figure sat down.
Rong Ci’s heart leaped. As soon as she turned her head, the black muzzle of a gun was pointed at her.
“Don’t move.”
The man was dressed all in black, wearing a mask with the brim of his cap pulled down low. She couldn’t see his face, but his gaze was cold and sharp.
Rong Ci raised her hands slightly and stopped moving.
The man took her bag and phone. “I’m not going to hurt you. After you take me where I need to go, you can leave.”
Before Rong Ci could react, he ordered coldly, “Drive.”
The area was empty. Not a single car or person in sight. The pharmacy was a distance awayâŚ
As Rong Ci was calculating her options, she noticed a strong smell of blood in the car.
She paused, then started the engine and asked, “Where to?”
“Go straight. To Rongdong Pier.” He added, “I’ll tell you exactly how to get there.”
“No need. I know the way.”
With that, Rong Ci drove off.
After that, Rong Ci focused on driving. The man said nothing more. The car fell silent.
Rongdong Pier was half an hour away. Throughout the drive, Rong Ci showed no sign of panic. She drove steadily and accurately, never taking a wrong turn.
The man held the gun, and the way he looked at her slowly changed.
But Rong Ci didn’t notice.
A moment later, the man said, “Stop the car under that banyan tree up ahead.”
Rong Ci: “Okay.”
The car came to a steady stop by the side of the road. The man’s gun was still pointed at her. As he got out of the car, she retrieved her bag, flipped through it calmly in front of him, and said, “I have some medicine here.”
During that half hour, the smell of blood in the car had grown stronger and stronger. She knew he was probably badly injured.
The man paused, but ignored her. He got out of the car directly, and his figure quickly disappeared into the darkness.
Since he didn’t want to accept her kindness, Rong Ci didn’t insist. She turned the steering wheel and drove away.
A few minutes later, the man boarded a boat that had come to meet him. He took off his cap and mask.
Just then, his phone rang. As he had someone tend to his wound, he answered.
Before he could speak, Qi Yuming said hurriedly, “Changbai, are you okay? My people said they didn’t meet up with you. Where are you?”
“There was a small hiccup. I’m at the pier now.”
“That’s good. What happened? You scared me to death!”
A moment later, after hanging up, He Changbai looked at the tall banyan tree in the distance and fell into thought.
Rong Ci arrived at Chu Zilan’s place half an hour later.
After taking her medicine and eating some congee, Chu Zilan felt a bit better, but she frowned: “Why do I smell blood? Xiao Ci, are you hurt?”
“No.”
That man had been injured. When he took her phone and bag, blood had gotten on them.
She had actually wiped them down after coming back, but it seemed she hadn’t cleaned them completely.
