Chapter 03

The Fu Family

Besides the imposing man from earlier, there was also a teenage boy.

The boy was handsome, tall, and lean. His clothes were neat and spotless, though the expression on his face looked somewhat awkward.

Fu Sihuai lowered his gaze and glanced at him indifferently.

“Tell the director yourself,” he said coldly. “What’s the name of the child you’re looking for?”

Fu Yueci pursed his lips, his eyes flickering uneasily.

It wasn’t that he wanted to find her.

He just thought the child looked pitiful.

The director looked at him in confusion.

“Young Master, which child are you talking about?”

Fu Yueci cleared his throat. A faint blush crept onto his fair face as he quietly uttered two words.

“Qingqing.”

His voice was so soft that the director almost didn’t hear it.

“Qingqing?”

She stared at the boy in surprise.

“You’ve met that child before?”

Fu Yueci lowered his head and hummed in acknowledgment.

Then he quickly added, trying to cover it up,

“I just think she looks pleasant enough.”

It definitely wasn’t because he liked her!

Fu Sihuai’s dark eyes swept across his son’s awkward expression. There was a trace of speechlessness hidden in his deep gaze.

He truly had nothing to say about his younger son’s tsundere personality.

Retracting his gaze, he spoke calmly,

“May I meet the child now?”

The director immediately nodded.

“She should be awake already. I’ll have someone bring her over.”

A few minutes later, a volunteer carried a sleepy little dumpling into the office.

Qingqing had no idea what was happening.

She had only just gone back to bed when her sister dug her out of the blankets.

Literally dug her out like a potato.

After being set down on the floor, the first person she saw was the nervous-looking director.

Children didn’t hold grudges for long.

She was no longer upset about what had happened the previous night.

“Director Mommy~”

The little girl waddled toward her and bumped into her leg with a soft plop, like a fluffy mochi.

Only after being picked up did she notice the two strangers in the room.

“Qingqing, this is Mr. Fu and Young Master Fu…” The director paused before continuing, “You can call him Uncle Fu for now.”

Qingqing nervously clutched the director’s clothes.

Her large watery eyes moved between the two men. When she saw Fu Yueci, her eyes brightened slightly.

Being obedient as always, she softly called out,

“Uncle Fu.”

Fu Sihuai’s gaze lingered on her for a few seconds.

His dark eyes revealed neither approval nor dislike.

Under such pressure, even the director didn’t dare speak.

Yet Qingqing seemed completely unaffected. She gave Fu Yueci a tiny smile.

Sweet and soft.

A moment later, Fu Sihuai nodded slightly toward the director.

“I’ll take her. Prepare the paperwork.”

The director was delighted.

Although she didn’t know much about Mr. Fu’s background, his bearing and manner made it obvious that he was no ordinary person.

Surely he wasn’t any worse than the Shen family from yesterday.

Still…

He didn’t seem easy to get along with.

Would Qingqing be treated well after going with him?

In the end, she decided to ask the child’s opinion.

Holding Qingqing in her arms, she asked gently,

“Qingqing, Mr. Fu wants to adopt you. Would you like to go home with him?”

The little girl was stunned.

Her round eyes immediately lit up.

She secretly peeked at Fu Sihuai.

The man sat on a simple wooden chair in the orphanage. His features were sharp and handsome, like an untouchable flower blooming atop a snowy mountain.

Qingqing quickly looked away and turned toward Fu Yueci instead.

The boy looked nervous.

His gaze darted aside, avoiding eye contact as he maintained a stiff expression.

As though remembering something, Qingqing suddenly grinned at him.

She looked as cheerful as a lucky doll.

“I want to!”

“I want to go home with Uncle Fu and Big Brother!”

The tension in Fu Yueci’s brows instantly melted away.

His fingers curled slightly.

If he had a tail, it would probably be wagging furiously right now.

While Fu Sihuai stayed behind to complete the adoption procedures, Fu Yueci waited outside.

Qingqing happily walked over to him.

Like they had known each other forever, she grabbed one of his fingers and looked up at him with her soft, fair face.

“Big Brother!”

Fu Yueci responded with a cold,

“Mm.”

His lips remained tightly pressed together.

The little dumpling wasn’t frightened by his cold attitude.

Tilting her head, she said in a sweet baby voice,

“Big Brother, Director Mommy said you were the one looking for me. Thank you for bringing me home. I like you too~”

Such a heartfelt confession from an adorable child would melt almost anyone’s heart.

But Fu Yueci…

His mouth was stubborn.

“I don’t like you.”

“Don’t get the wrong idea.”

His youthful face flushed red with embarrassment.

Qingqing stared at him for two seconds.

Then she let go of his finger dejectedly.

“Okay then~”

The little girl looked genuinely discouraged.

She didn’t say another word.

Fu Yueci secretly glanced at her several times.

Bored, Qingqing squatted beside him and used a small stick to doodle in the dirt.

Then his eyes landed on the redness in her palm.

His heart suddenly tightened.

“How did you hurt your hand?”

Qingqing pressed her lips together.

Her long eyelashes drooped like little brushes.

It had been bandaged yesterday, but her hand had gotten itchy during the night.

Without realizing it, she had rubbed the bandage off.

“I fell…”

“I already put medicine on it.”

Her voice was quiet.

Fu Yueci didn’t think much of it.

Assuming she had simply been playing around and fallen, he bent down and lightly tapped her head with a slender finger.

“Dummy.”

“I’ve never seen anyone manage to fall and scrape up their hand this badly.”

Qingqing covered her head and sniffled.

“Got it…”

she murmured obediently, without the slightest trace of temper.

Watching her reaction, the corners of Fu Yueci’s lips curved upward ever so slightly.

What a soft little bun.

When Fu Sihuai finally came out after finishing the paperwork, the two had somehow grown much closer.

For some reason, they were holding hands again.

He glanced at them but said nothing.

Instead, he led them toward the orphanage gate.

After walking a few steps, Qingqing suddenly turned around.

She looked reluctantly at the director, who was waving goodbye with a smile.

After a moment’s hesitation, she released Fu Yueci’s hand and ran back.

The director crouched down and smiled kindly.

“Qingqing, be good after you go there. Listen to Mr. Fu and don’t make him angry.”

“If Mr. Fu allows it, I’ll come visit you.”

She gently wiped away the tears on the little girl’s face and placed a packet of tissues into her hand.

“Don’t cry anymore. Hurry and go. We can’t keep Mr. Fu waiting.”

With tears blurring her vision, Qingqing choked out,

“I’m… sorry. About last night…”

The director wiped her tears clean and didn’t let her finish.

“Go on, Qingqing.”

“When I find your necklace, I’ll bring it to you.”

“And I’ll take good care of Da Huang too. If Mr. Fu’s family wants a dog, then once Da Huang’s puppies are old enough, I’ll choose the prettiest one and send it to you.”

She gently pushed the little girl forward.

“Go now.”

Fu Yueci walked back over, bent down, and silently picked Qingqing up.

He nodded to the director before carrying the sobbing little girl into the car.

Only after the Fu family’s vehicle had completely disappeared from sight did the director turn around and head back.

She went to the cafeteria and picked up two steamed buns.

Then she entered the surveillance room and pulled up the security footage from yesterday.

Every child in this orphanage was like her own child.

Rourou had always been competitive and eager to win, but she wasn’t the kind of child who would deliberately hurt someone.

Lately, however, her behavior had changed considerably.

Whenever new clothes were donated in the past, she would always rush forward to choose first.

Yet three days ago, during a clothing distribution, she had acted like a completely different person.

She neither fought nor competed for anything.
