Chapter 21
If There Is a Heavenâ
If heaven exists on earth, this must be it.
The dazzling, sweet, and almost dreamlike scene made me completely lose myself.
This was the hottest dessert shop in Myuton these days.
They said the patissier here was a disciple of the imperial palaceâs head chefâwhether that was true or not, the desserts were as beautiful as artwork.
âRibe.â
ââŚâ
âRibe?â
âOh, yes.â
âAre you okay?â
Adrian looked flustered as I stood there, seemingly on the verge of tears, lost in bliss.
âItâs just so amazing.â
âRibe, we came to pick out a dessert for your friend, remember?â
âI almost forgot my mission.â
âBut itâs also important to calm our tempers.â
I chuckled and began my dessert shopping in earnest.
Oh right, Adrian had said he would choose a dessert too.
âDidnât you say you were going to buy a gift too, Lord Watford?â
âYeah, but I honestly canât tell whatâs what. They all look the same to me.â
What do you mean, the same?! Where exactly?!
I gave him a dumbfounded look, and he started laughing awkwardly.
Then he leaned in slightly and whispered.
âHelp me.â
To be honest, I wasnât too keen on accompanying Adrian when we first set out.
Every time I met him, he somehow managed to put me in awkward situations, and I thought his playful attitude didnât suit me.
But just earlier, if it hadnât been for him at the apothecary, I might have accidentally fed Leonie topical ointment.
So I resolved to help him pick out a gift properly.
Iâm the type of person who feels compelled to return a favor, whether good or bad.
âAlright, you said itâs a gift, right?â
If Iâm going to help, I might as well do it right.
I rubbed my temple with a finger, as if adjusting imaginary glasses, and asked,
âDo you know the recipientâs preferences?â
âSuch as?â
âWhat fruits they like, what colors they prefer, whether they like sweet things or not, if they always eat dessert after meals, if theyâre watching their weight or not, or if they plan to diet soon!â
âWow.â
Adrian didnât answer. He just let out a short exclamation.
âWhat? Did I say something odd?â
âNo, I mean, this is the kind of thing you need to know when buying a gift.â
I lifted my shoulders proudly.
But Adrian looked the exact oppositeâapologetic.
âSorry, but I canât answer a single one of your questions.â
âOh no, you seriously donât know anything?â
âUnfortunately.â
âHm.â
My plan to pick out the perfect gift based on the recipientâs preferences hit a bit of a snag.
But I wasnât one to give up so easily.
âWell, that does make it a little harder. But donât worry. Just because you donât know their tastes doesnât mean you canât give a gift.â
I rubbed my chin and continued.
âIn times like this, you go with a classic crowd-pleaser.â
âA what?â
âThe best-selling item here!â
When I clenched my fist with excitement, Adrian shook his head, chuckling.
âOh, Ribe, you really are something.â
ââŚ?â
âNever mind. Alright, Iâll go with your suggestion and choose a crowd-pleaser.â
âExcellent choice. Itâll make a great gift.â
After picking out Adrianâs gift, I started choosing desserts for Leonie too.
Since she prefers tart over sweet, I picked a fruit tart with fresh toppings and a slice of lemon cake.
âAdrian?â
I was giddy from the sweet aromas when a well-groomed man called out to him.
âAh, Harius.â
âWow, long time no see. How have you been?â
âYes, itâs been a while.â
I stepped back politely, and Adrian smiled at me before introducing us.
âThis is Lady Bernadette. She came to help with my terrible sense of taste.â
âNice to meet you. Harius Clizen.â
He was a tall gentleman with sharp features. He gave me a brief greeting, then leaned toward Adrian and lowered his voice.
âCan we talk for a moment? Itâs urgent.â
Before Adrian could turn to me, I waved both hands.
âI suddenly really want to eat something right now. Go ahead and talk, Iâll just be here eating.â
Generous me would yield this time.
âSorry, this might take a while,â Harius said with an apologetic look toward me.
âAh.â
Thatâs when I realized my sense of timing didnât quite match Hariusâs urgency.
âAdrian, since you picked your gift, you can go now.â
âButââ
âItâs fine. Just make sure to deliver it well.â
I smiled, and Harius clapped Adrian on the shoulder and led him away.
âThank you, my lady. Iâll be borrowing him for today.â
After Adrian left, I rubbed my hands together and turned back to the display case.
Honestly, I had found his company a bit annoyingâbut now that I was alone, I felt a little lonely.
âMaybe Iâll just eat with Leonie.â
I was just about to add another dessert to the gift box for myself whenâ
âOh my, and who might this be?â
The sharp voice from behind froze me in place.
I didnât need to turn to know who it was.
âLong time no see, Lady Bernadette.â
Damn. Pailey.
This was our first meeting since that standoff at the ball.
âAh, right. Iâm in a bit of a hurry, so Iâll be going now.â
Best not to get entangled with her. Iâd stepped in at the ball for Leonie, but today I didnât have to.
Thatâs whenâ
âLady Bernadette, youâre really strange.â
Pailey grabbed my wrist and muttered.
ââŚWhat?â
âYou humiliated me at the ball in front of everyone, and yet you havenât said a word of apology.â
I slowly opened and closed my eyes.
Why did I keep running into her?
In the original story, she and Bernadette were close. They liked the same things, had similar tastes, and went to the same placesâit made sense weâd run into each other.
From now on, I need to do the opposite of anything familiar.
âYou embarrassed me with that nonsense in public, and now youâre just trying to cozy up to His Grace.â
One more time. Just hold it in one more time.
No need to stir up more trouble.
I forced a smile and softened my lips.
âOh, I did that, didnât I?â
As I opened my mouth, the air around us changed instantly.
All eyes were on us.
âI was too busy with personal matters to send a letter of apology. Sorry?â
I lifted my tone just enough to avoid making it a real apologyâmy pride wouldnât allow it.
âIf youâre so busy, how do you have time to buy desserts?â
Clearly, Pailey wasnât going to let it go.
âI still need to eat to surviveâŚâ
âThose are nicely wrapped. A gift?â
She looked down at the box in my hands, lifting her chin.
âWhat, donât tell me itâs for Lady Almaz?â
Gasps rose from the women behind her like an audience.
âThatâs right. Leonieâs been unwell, so I was going to bring her something nice.â
I shouldâve held it in.
I shouldâve just made an excuse and walked out.
âLady Bernadette, why are you so different now?â
Pailey suddenly narrowed her brows and looked me up and down.
âAnd whatâs with your outfit today? Youâve become so pathetic. Is your family doing poorly?â
ââŚExcuse me?â
âOh, so thatâs why youâre groveling under Leonie now? But too badâAlmazâs situation isnât looking great either.â
ââŚâ
âYou really should pick who you attach yourself to more carefully.â
The snickering laughter grew louder until more women burst into full-blown laughter.
âGoodness, another ridiculous outfit today.â
âThe Bernadette family must be in trouble.â
âI hadnât heard that, but how pitiful.â
Ugh. I really just wanted a quiet life.
I blew my bangs up with a puff of breath and lifted my head.
Hey. Iâm the kind of person who always returns what I receiveâgood or bad.
âMy, it seems you donât know.â
As I spoke languidly, Pailey stared at me with a strange expression.
âDo you know how much labor and sweat it takes to make that yellow dress youâre wearing?â
âWhy would I need to know that?â
I took the hem of her skirt and gave it a light shake.
âDid you know that yellow dye comes from the Cobane flower? That it only grows in high-altitude regions? That itâs hard to import due to diplomatic issues and now becoming a national concern? That the palace is losing sleep over this?â
âW-What are you talking about?â
âOh, I guess someone like you wouldnât know. You only ever think about what to eat or wear. How pathetic.â
âLady Bernadette!â
Pailey shouted, but I knew she was just throwing a tantrum because she had no real comeback.
âIâm not some fool who drifts through life thoughtlessly. Lady, if youâre a noble, start paying attention to how the world works. Stop parading around with flowers in your hair, thinking thatâs all there is.â
