Chapter 29
During lunch, Su Li’s phone buzzed.
It was a call from Lu Jing.
Su Li glanced at the others and whispered to Madam Mo, “Auntie, I need to take a call.”
Madam Mo nodded.
Once outside, Su Li quickly answered.
“Lu Jing.”
There was no voice on the other end at first. Listening carefully, she heard sobbing.
Su Li’s heart tightened. “Lu Jing, speak to me. What’s wrong? Don’t scare me.”
“My mom is threatening to die if I leave,” Lu Jing said, taking a deep, shaky breath, her voice choked with emotion. “Su Li… I shouldn’t have come back.”
Just hearing those words made Su Li anxious.
She couldn’t imagine the mental torment Lu Jing was going through right now.
“Can’t they talk it out calmly?” Su Li’s worry flared. “Why do they have to force you?”
“For face,” Lu Jing said bitterly. “For the sake of so-called face, they’re capable of anything. And it’s my fault for thinking too simply.”
“This has nothing to do with you,” Su Li bit her lip. “So what do we do now? How about this—I can drive over and get you.”
“It’s too far.”
“It’s not far. Just over a thousand kilometers.” Su Li checked the time. “If I leave now, I can be there by tomorrow morning.”
Lu Jing refused. “No. Don’t come. Even if you come, my parents won’t let you take me away.”
“Then what do we do?” Su Li was at a loss.
“If this is fate, I’ll accept it.”
Hearing Lu Jing’s tired voice, Su Li frowned. “You’re just giving up?”
“What else can I do?”
“This affects your whole life,” Su Li said, taking a deep breath and pacing in place. “Calm down, and we’ll figure something out.”
“There’s nothing we can do.”
Su Li looked up and suddenly saw Mo Xingyuan.
He had come looking for her and just happened to see her pacing anxiously.
“Wait a moment, I’ll call you back shortly. Don’t worry,” she said, ending the call and walking toward Mo Xingyuan.
He stood there, his gaze cold and distant.
“Does Chi Mu have a girlfriend?” Su Li asked urgently.
Mo Xingyuan raised an eyebrow. “Why?”
“Lu Jing… she’s my best friend. She met a man she thought was decent, but when she visited his family yesterday, she realized they weren’t good people. She told her parents she wanted to break up, but they trapped her and refused to let her leave, insisting she marry this match instead.”
Su Li briefly explained Lu Jing’s situation. “She wants to leave, but her mom is threatening to die if she does.”
“What do you want me to do?” Mo Xingyuan asked.
“If Chi Mu doesn’t have a girlfriend, I want him to pretend to be Lu Jing’s boyfriend and go pick her up,” Su Li explained her plan. “Chi Mu seems like the perfect kind of well-off husband. If her parents see that Lu Jing has a wealthy and capable boyfriend, they’ll definitely accept him.”
Mo Xingyuan frowned slightly.
“I’m asking him to pretend,” Su Li added, worried Mo Xingyuan would misunderstand. “As long as Lu Jing can come back safely, that’s all that matters.”
“I’m not Chi Mu. I can’t make decisions for him.”
Su Li understood. “So, can this plan work?”
“I said, I’m not him. I don’t know.”
Su Li was momentarily stunned, then quickly called Chi Mu, explaining her request.
To her surprise, Chi Mu agreed.
Before she could even react, Su Li hurriedly thanked him.
With Chi Mu handled, Su Li immediately explained the plan to Lu Jing. With no other options, Lu Jing had to try it.
She hoped her mother would accept him, given Chi Mu’s excellent status.
“I’ll send you Chi Mu’s photo and information. Contact him and see how to coordinate.”
“Okay.”
As soon as they finished talking, Chi Mu was already preparing to set off.
