Chapter 26

The sky on New Year’s Eve was incredibly beautiful and colorful.

Although night had fallen, everyone was growing increasingly excited.

Mr. Mo and Madame Mo were older and didn’t want to stay up late. Even before the New Year’s bell rang, they had already gone to their rooms.

Mo Xingyuan went to his room not long after dinner and didn’t come out again.

Su Li and the servants lit a fire in the courtyard, gathering around it to keep warm and stay up for the New Year.

After chatting for a while, Su Li sent a message to Lu Jing to check how she was doing.

About half an hour later, Lu Jing called her.

Su Li got up and went aside to answer.

“Hello, how’s it going?”

“I’m going crazy!”

Hearing this, Su Li frowned. “What happened?”

“I told my mom I wanted to break up with Wei Yu, but she absolutely refuses. She said everyone knows we’re dating, and if we break up, people will gossip about us.”

Lu Jing was furious. “I don’t care what others say. What’s even more infuriating is that my mom hid my ID card and household registration book. She wants me to get a marriage certificate with Wei Yu right after the New Year.”

Just listening to her, Su Li felt a wave of pressure.

“What is your mom thinking?”

“I don’t care. Tomorrow morning, I’m taking a car and leaving,” Lu Jing said resolutely. “She thinks she can just trap me at home—but it’s not going to happen.”

Su Li truly hadn’t expected Lu Jing’s parents to be so dismissive of their daughter’s wishes.

“And what about Wei Yu?”

“I left his house around noon today. He called me in the afternoon and said it’s just for his parents and relatives to see. Once we’re married, it’ll be just the two of us living together. If I don’t want to do it, I don’t have to.”

Lu Jing snorted lightly. “Do you think what he said is trustworthy? With the kind of people he grew up with, none of them are saints. I don’t believe he’s some exception.”

Su Li knew Lu Jing was always clear-headed; what she said made sense.

“As long as you’ve thought it through.”

“I’ve thought it through very clearly.” Lu Jing took a deep breath. “I’m grateful to have seen Wei Yu’s family so early, and I’m also relieved that they were so eager to intimidate me. Otherwise, if I were already emotionally attached, or if they had fooled me until after the wedding before showing their true colors, I wouldn’t even have a place to cry.”

“Don’t worry about me. I think this is a good thing,” Lu Jing said, completely relaxed and even finding it amusing.

Su Li nodded. “It really is a good thing. As long as you’ve made up your mind. But tomorrow is only New Year’s Day—where are you going to find a car?”

“I’ll just pay a high price,” Lu Jing said. “Tickets for planes and high-speed trains are sold out now.”

“Then get some rest. We’ll talk when you’re back.”

“Mm.”

After hanging up, Su Li couldn’t help but sigh.

It was lucky that Lu Jing was capable, independent, and clear-headed; otherwise, she could have easily fallen into that vortex.

For women, marriage is never just about the two people.

At the very least, it involves two families—or more.

Those clueless relatives and friends all want to meddle as well.

Su Li sat back down. Her phone vibrated.

It was a message from Su Wei’an.

【A Li, Happy New Year. When can you come back for a visit?】

Su Li looked at it but didn’t respond.

After a while, Su Wei’an sent another message.

【A Li, we plan to visit the Mo family on the second day of the New Year. Our families are now relatives by marriage; it’s proper to visit each other.】

Su Li felt her chest tighten.

She called him directly.

It rang only once before he picked up.

“A Li.”

“I thought I told you not to contact me again,” Su Li said coldly. “Also, don’t get involved with the Mo family.”
