Chapter 02
The answer was surprisingly simple.
âIf you understand the trends, exams get easier.â
I wouldnât have known before, but now I did. I looked again at the tattered banner. It didnât seem like much, but the âFriends Entertainment Quarterly Auditionâ actually contained quite a bit of information.
âFirst, auditions are held every quarter.â
They recruit trainees, which means spots open up just as often.
âSecond, itâs common enough that they reuse banners.â
The banner was worn out. That meant auditions were held regularly, with plenty of applicants.
âWell, Friends Entertainment is a good company.â
They had quite a few major idol groups. And most of them even renewed their contracts after expiration. Of course, there had been some controversies.
âThe biggest one was Zenith, right?â
For a moment, his face flashed through my mind.
âDamn it. Kang Minje.â
Right. That bastard was here. His debut had been in the idol group âZenithâ under Friends Entertainment. A chill ran down the back of my neck.
âKang Minje, you asshole.â
I stretched out my legs. Old memories swirled in my head before scattering into nothing. I muttered quietly.
âSo if I keep going like this⌠Iâll end up in the same group as that guy?â
A curse slipped out. I let out a small breath. Well, that was something to think about after passing. But it was also something Iâd have to accept.
Meeting him. Maybe even being in the same group.
âIf I hate it, I can just get up and leave.â
I immediately shook my head.
âNo. Thatâs not it.â
This was the chance to become the idol I had dreamed of since I was young. And this place was good.
âBeing a trainee at Friends Entertainment carries weight.â
Even if I ended up elsewhere, just having been a trainee here would help.
âFocus on one thing.â
I set my goal clearly.
âI want to become a top idol.â
I wanted to succeed. I was desperate enough to do anything for it. And for that, I needed this company.
âKang Minje is a problem, but Iâll think about that later. What matters is passing.â
I looked around again. Quite a few numbers had already been called. The audition pace wasnât too fast or too slow.
That was when I heard a frivolous voice from behind.
âAre you number 119?â
I quietly checked the number pinned to my jacket. I hadnât even noticed before. Ah, so I was 119.
I raised my head. A guy with bleached yellow hair and a shallow-looking face grinned at me.
âIâm 118.â
He sure liked saying things no one asked. I deliberately smiled sweetly.
âWhat luck.â
I recognized him.
âLee Kyungbae. He later went by the stage name Lee Kyung.â
A memory flickered.
We had met at a movie audition beforeâhe was trying out for a supporting role as the protagonistâs friend. As he passed me, he had said:
ââWhat a joke, having to audition with someone like this.â
And now we met again here.
I smiled wider.
You walked right into this one, bastard.
Unaware of my thoughts, he leaned closer and asked,
âHow old are you?â
âIâm in my second year of middle school.â
âYouâre young. Iâm a first-year in high school.â
Wasnât that young too?
âIâm freaking out because I started late. These days trainees start from elementary school.â
Like gifted education, I guess. Makes sense. Money draws people in. If you have talent, starting early isnât a bad idea.
âI really need to pass.â
He grumbled while adjusting his denim jacket. Despite being annoying, he looked a bit cuteâprobably because he was still young.
âWell, if this doesnât work out, my dad said heâd just start a company for me. So Iâll just go with that.â
Take back the âcuteâ part. What the hell?
âPeople really donât change.â
So he was rotten from the start. Whether that yellow came from wealth or decay, Iâd find out laterâbut he sure was consistent.
âThere was a rumor he bought that movie role with moneyâŚâ
Guess that was true.
I smiled brightly.
If that was the case, I had nothing to hold back.
âCan I ask your name, hyung?â
âHuh? Iâm Lee Kyung.â
Come on, hyung. Your real name is Lee Kyungbae.
âIâm Cha Dowon.â
Now that introductions were doneâŚ
âWould you like to become my stepping stone?â
Our numbers were close, so weâd likely enter together. Whether this audition was absolute or relative evaluation, having someone to compare against wasnât bad.
âArrogant idiots fall quickly.â
He patted my shoulder.
âWhich audition is this for you?â
âMy first.â
âReally? Iâve done a lot, and you have to stand out. Youâve gotta be flashy to get noticed.â
I smiled.
âNo way.â
The judges saw hundreds every quarter. Sure, some companies liked flashy peopleâbut not Friends Entertainment.
âThey prefer sincerity, if I remember right.â
Thatâs why their artists tended to have quiet personal lives. Of course, there were always exceptions.
âReally?â
âYeah!â
Then why was he saying this?
âTrying to mess with me?â
Cute, honestly.
Thenâ
âDamn it.â
I remembered.
Ten years ago⌠I had believed those exact words.
âUnbelievable.â
My face burned. I had been so naĂŻve.
I looked at him again. Lee Kyungbae smirked, clearly pleased.
âPeople like you deserve consequences.â
So it was you.
The reason I gave up on becoming an idol.
Well, I had my share of blame tooâbut still.
Things were different now.
âHow should I screw him over properly?â
Just as I was thinking, a staff member gestured. It was time.
Too bad. Not enough time.
I smiled at him.
âNervous, hyung?â
He walked stiffly.
âI-Iâm not nervous at all.â
He was stuttering. Sure, not nervous.
Didnât matter to me. The more shaken he was, the better for me.
I slightly lowered my head.
Back then, I had been shaking like crazy.
âMaybe because Iâve done this beforeâŚâ
I wasnât nervous at all. I was excited.
Like stepping onto a stage meant just for me.
A breeze brushed past my neck.
âFeels like someoneâs pushing me forward.â
I lifted my head.
Iâm not failing this time.
Letâs do this, Cha Dowon.
The wind answered again. My steps felt lighter.
The audition room was simpler than expected.
Just chairs and a long table.
âThe CEO and staff, I guess.â
Nothing specialâ
Until I saw the person at the far end.
A white cap. Sunglasses.
But I recognized him instantly.
âWhy is he here?â
Kang Minje.
My fists clenched.
I wanted to rush over and punch him.
âNo.â
I took a deep breath.
If I did that, Iâd be thrown outâand never return.
âCalm down.â
I already knew.
He would debut here. Successfully.
âThat group did well.â
If theyâd lasted a few more years, they couldâve ridden the Korean Wave even higher.
âBut they disbanded so suddenlyâŚâ
I sat down as instructed, recalling Zenith.
âThey were good.â
Great songs. Solid concept.
They were everywhere at one point.
âSo why did they fail?â
I glanced at Minje.
He looked calm, observing everyone.
âThere was a lot of noise when they disbanded.â
I remembered an interview.
ââThe company tried to build a group that suited Minje hyung.â
A departing member had smiled bitterly.
ââThey openly searched for a âcrazy maknaeâ to match a ârational leader.â Obviously, they couldnât find one. So they just debuted trainees. That was us.â
ââEverything revolved around Minjeâmusic, concept, everything. I want my own place.â
I smiled.
That interview revealed a lot.
FirstâMinje was the leader, but couldnât manage the group.
âMakes sense.â
Secondâthe group revolved around him.
âWhich means⌠joining his group guarantees success.â
I glanced at him again.
âIf you use me⌠Iâll use you too.â
Sleeping with the enemy.
âAs long as I donât trust you.â
Right, Minje hyung?
This time, I wonât trust you.
Weâve got a lot to settle.
I smiled and sat upright.
The audition continued.
A participant sang a ballad.
âThirdâwhat theyâre looking for is a crazy maknae.â
I smiled.
âPerfect.â
Could I act crazy?
Of course.
âI didnât spend years in theater for nothing.â
Soâ
âI just need to play the crazy maknae.â
Soon, the song ended.
âNumber 118, what will you do?â
Lee Kyungbae stood.
âIâll dance!â
âWhat song?â
âYumiâs Shooting.â
Huh?
That was⌠unexpected.
A female solo artistâs song? And that one?
âZombie concept⌠pretty bizarre.â
I had learned that dance before. It wasnât easy.
He started dancing.
It was⌠awful.
Way too exaggerated.
Embarrassing.
âThatâs something Yumi can pull offânot you.â
He completely missed the emotion.
âThis isnât a comedy stage.â
The judges looked unimpressed.
I glanced at him.
âHe self-destructed before I even did anything.â
SeriouslyâŚ
What was he thinking?
This guy is unbelievably stupid.
