Chapter 88 â What Do You Think of Me?
2024.01.27
âDonât be too nervous. Just show what youâve studied.â
The man sitting furthest to the left spoke in a leisurely tone, wearing a friendly smile.
âAlright, hereâs the first question. Draw a magic circle and put a barrier on this egg.â
From the way he said âfirst,â it sounded like there would be more questions. The difficulty wasnât high, so before anyone could blink a few times, Cordelia had already cast a barrier over the egg.
âIâm done.â
ââŚAlready? Thatâs quick.â
Though he looked a bit surprised, the man promptly swept the egg from the desk and let it drop to the floor. Before it could hit, the egg floated gently and landed without a crack.
âHm. Looks like youâve studied hard. Second question.â
The woman seated beside him spoke next.
âDraw a double-layered magic circle and put it on that window over there.â
âDone.â
âWhat?â
Cordelia answered the moment the woman finished speaking. The female mage shot to her feet, hurried to the window, and tried to open it. It wouldnât budge.
âYou really did that in such a short time?â
A flicker of surprise passed through her eyes. Then, the man in the centerâKaynonnâspoke.
âSeems like showing up first wasnât a coincidence. Hm. The third question is magic circle nullification.â
âKaynonn, sir, thatâs still too advanced for a low-tier mage toââ
âIf sheâs studied, she should know at least this much.â
Ignoring the protests of the others, Kaynonn looked Cordelia squarely in the eyes and drew a magic circleâvisible only to her.
âGo on, try to nullify it.â
From his confident tone, Cordelia had expected something truly difficult, but it was only a triple-layered magic circle.
While her maximum layering ability was only up to fivefold for now, nullifying magic circles was one of her strongest skills.
She located the distortion in the circle and injected mana.
âDone.â
âAlready? Kaynonn, sir, did she really nullify it?â
ââŚWell, well. Looks like you really have studied. Letâs try a quadruple-layer this time. This oneâsââ
âDone.â
Cordelia was repeating the same phrase over and over. She barely finished speaking before Kaynonn shot to his feet, his eyes blazing with excitement.
âYouâyou!â
âYes?â
âTry this one.â
He drew a quintuple-layer magic circle. Cordelia dismantled it with little trouble. Kaynonnâs excitement spikedâhe immediately followed with sixfold, then sevenfold circles in succession.
Her âDoneâ took only slightly longer each time.
Kaynonn stared at her as if heâd just struck gold while plowing a fieldâso much so that his eyes might pop out.
âWhat did you say your name was again?â
âCordelia Vasquez.â
âKaynonn, sir, did she really nullify a quadruple-layer magic circle?â
âQuadruple? She did sevenfold.â
âWhat? A low-tier mage? Thatâs impossibleââ
The other mages nearby didnât seem willing to believe his words.
Kaynonn practically bounded over to Cordelia and grabbed her hand. His beaming face was so bright, it made him seem like an overjoyed child.
âOur Cordelia! Where on earth have you been until now?â
ââŚExcuse me?â
âDo you have any idea how long Iâve been waiting for you? What school are you in? Never mindâwhatever it is, transfer immediately to Diduacel!â
Cordelia had no idea when sheâd become âour Cordelia.â Flustered, she stammered,
âMy master would never allow that.â
âWhat school are you from? Whoever your master is, donât worry. I can handle it. You do know Diduacel is one of the three great schools of the Mage Association, right? So, which is it?â
âAcheron.â
âAcheron? âŚAcheron! Donât tell me youâre Atillayâs disciple?â
âYes.â
âAaaargh!â
Kaynonn clutched his head and screamed like a madman. Startled, Cordelia took a step back.
âWhy him, of all people?! Out of all the schools, why Acheron?!â
By now, Cordelia was starting to think he was a little scary. Smiling one moment, yelling the next, suddenly angryâit didnât seem like normal behavior.
She waited until he calmed down before carefully asking,
âUm⌠I have a question.â
âWhat is it? Ask anything.â
ââŚWhat kind of test is this, exactly?â
ââŚâ
The room fell completely silent. The sudden drop in mood made Cordelia wonder if sheâd said something wrong, so she quickly added,
âThe truth is, I was just delivering a letter to you, Kaynonn, sir, and somehow ended up taking this test.â
âYou took the test without even knowing what it was? Then you didnât prepare?â
âUh⌠But Iâve been studying hard on my own.â
âHaa⌠The heavens are cruel. To think such talent ended up in Acheron, with Atillay!â
Kaynonn wailed again. At that moment, the man who had given her the first question smiled and handed something to Cordelia.
âCongratulations, Vasquez.â
ââŚSorry? For what?â
âYou just passed the promotion test for intermediate mage.â
What he handed her was a blue ribbon. Cordelia stared at the ribbon in her palm, then back at his face.
ââŚEh?â
âYou only need to solve three out of five questions to pass, and you solved all three. The last partâthe third stageâis just an interview, so unless youâre a mass murderer whoâs killed a dozen people, youâll pass.â
Rather than being overjoyed, Cordelia felt bewildered. Could becoming an intermediate mage really be this easy?
âIntermediate mage? But Iâve only been at the Association for one day.â
âOne day? When did you start learning magic?â
âA little over a year ago.â
ââŚGood grief.â
The woman who had been the most composed of the group sighed deeply.
âSo Atillay really did take a disciple just like himself. Intermediate level after only a year of learning magic.â
âUh⌠If Iâve done something wrong, I can retake the test.â
âWith that skill? Donât. Youâll just crush the othersâ confidence.â
Kaynonn cut in, still looking at her with regret in his eyes.
âDo you enjoy studying magic circles?â
âYes. Itâs⌠pretty fun.â
âHa ha! âPretty fun,â she says. Alright, Iâve seen your nullification skillâhow far can you layer?â
âHmm⌠I can do fivefold now.â
ââŚAaaargh! Why did you have to meet Atillay first?! Fivefold in just a year!â
Kaynonn screamed toward the ceiling again. Cordelia bit back the truthâit had only been three months. If he knew, he might never leave her alone.
Just then, she felt a strong surge of mana near the door. She turned her head just as it swung open.
âThere you are.â
âAh, Master.â
âYou said you were running an errandâdo you know how long Iâve been looking for you?â
Grumbling, her master strode over. The moment Kaynonn saw Leonard, he rushed toward him.
âAtillay!â
âWhat do you want?â
âYour discipleâour Cordeliaââ
âOur Cordelia?â
Leonardâs eyebrow twitched at the phrase, but Kaynonn didnât relent.
âHow about sending our Cordelia to Diduacel? A genius who can layer fivefold magic circles after just a year of studyâI could raise her with such care! Sheâd make history there!â
Leonard stared at him for a moment, then suddenly raised his hand and wiggled his fourth finger right in front of Kaynonnâs face.
âI already engraved my name on her finger, knowing leeches like you would swarm my disciple.â
âYouâyouâve already chosen your successor?!â
Kaynonnâs eyes widened as he glared at Leonardâs fourth finger. Leonard smirked triumphantly and lightly pulled Cordelia to his side.
âHistory should be written by the person themselves, not by someone elseâs disciple. Letâs go, Cordelia.â
âAhâyes. Goodbye.â
âCoâCordelia! If you ever have trouble at the Association, come to me anytime, alright? You know where my lab is? Top floor, last roomâcome anytime!â
Kaynonnâs desperate voice trailed behind them. Leonard wasted no time leaving, as if afraid Kaynonn might follow.
âWhat exactly were you doing in there?â
âWell⌠I somehow ended up taking the intermediate mage promotion test.â
ââŚWhat?â
âBut I passed.â
She showed him the blue ribbon sheâd received. Though sheâd taken the test by accident, passing still made her feel proud.
Leonard gave a dry laugh.
âI send you on an errand and you come back promoted.â
âI did well, right? I even solved the first-stage test in first place.â
(It had been under five minutes due to a misunderstanding, but stillâfirst was first.) She puffed up a little.
âAnd the proctor even asked if I was some kind of geniusââ
âMore than me?â
ââŚOf course not, Master.â
Her voice shrank instantly. Leonard snatched the ribbon from her hand.
âAh! Thatâs mine!â
âHold still.â
He stepped behind her, awkwardly gathering her hair and tying it up with the ribbon.
Each time his fingers brushed her hair, Cordelia squirmed a little from the strange feeling.
âThere. Hm.â
He stepped back to face her again.
The hairstyle was lopsided, messy, and strands stuck out everywhereâhardly something anyone would call pretty out of politeness. But through Leonardâs love-struck eyes, it looked quite nice. Noâbeautiful.
âYou look pretty.â
âPâPretty?â
âYeah. Letâs go. I had your desk and things moved into the lab.â
He said it casually and started walking ahead. Cordelia fiddled with her hair for no reason before quickly following him.
Normally, she wouldâve brushed off his words without a second thought, but somehow, that single wordâprettyâlodged itself deep in her chest. She couldnât stop thinking about it.

That’s just too adorable. XD
