Chapter 24 â Rophael Mage Association
November 24, 2023
âWhat do you think is the weakest point here?â
âWeakest point?â
âLike, visuallyâdoes any part of it look different from the rest?â
âHmmâŚâ
It was a complex circle made of dots and lines all tangled together, but when examined closely, one area did seem slightly off. Cordelia carefully pointed to that part with her finger.
âThis part?â
âWhere exactly? I canât see it. Describe it.â
âAh, I mean the spot where three dots are clustered together. That part looks a bit distorted.â
âYouâŚâ
âAm I wrong?â
Leonard smiled. That was rare. He usually only smirked in disdain or scoffed, so Cordelia felt a chill down her spine the moment she saw his smile.
âItâs you.â
âW-what is?â
âYou might be the one who can break through Diloanaâs domain.â
âAre you serious? Iâve only been learning magic for just a month. Thereâs no way I can do something like that.â
âThat doesnât matter. Iâm not asking you to dismantle the barrier yourself. Just point out the weak spot. Iâll take care of breaking it.â
âBut you said even setting one foot in Diloanaâs domain means instant death! Donât you have to get close to analyze it?â
âWell, you just have to be careful not to die.â
âIs that supposed to be comforting?!â
Outraged by his reckless statement, Cordelia jumped up and flatly refused.
âIâm not going. My dream is to live a long and quiet life. If someoneâs going, it should be you, Master.â
Leonard grinned at her strong and firm refusal.
âCordelia.â
âYes?â
âRemember what you said when I agreed to take you as my apprentice?â
âW-what did I say?â
âYou said, âUntil you safely return to Atillay, Iâll help you in every way I can.ââ
It had been over a month, yet he recalled her exact words without missing a beat.
Rather than impressed, Cordelia was terrified by his memory.
Her lips twisted.
âB-but I also said I wouldnât do anything that puts my life in danger!â
âRight. And you might not die.â
âWhat does might not die even mean?!â
âI canât take responsibility if you trip over a rock and die near the barrier.â
It was disturbingly realistic, making it all the scarier. Cordelia was about to protest again when Leonard cut her off with finality.
âBesides, I never asked for your opinion in the first place. Still, thanks for sharing it.â
ââŚExcuse me?â
âWeâll depart in ten days, so be ready.â
ââŚ.â
âHi, Roti.â
For some reason, Roti wagged her tail and greeted her more warmly than usual todayâbut it didnât last long. Soon, the gray dog buried her nose in the meat pouch tied to Cordeliaâs waist.
âYou must be hungry. Here, eat.â
As soon as she placed the meat on the ground, Roti devoured it in a frenzy.
âWhatâs going to happen to you when Iâm gone, Roti? Whoâll feed you then?â
Despite Cordeliaâs lament, the gray dog chomped away at her meal, seemingly uninterested.
âMy life plan was just to learn a few support spells and work as a magic appraiser⌠How did I end up like this? I shouldâve never gotten into magic in the first place. Sigh.â
Roti, now finished with the food, sniffed around the straw with her nose. Cordelia handed over more meat.
âRoti⌠what should I do? What if I die there?â
ââŚ.â
âUgh. What am I even doing, talking to a dog?â
She buried her face in her knees and let out a deep sigh. Who knew how much time had passed when she felt a wet snout gently tapping her head.
Cordelia looked up. Roti was licking her chin with her damp tongue.
âAre you⌠comforting me?â
Cordelia reached out and gently stroked the coarse gray fur. This time, surprisingly, Roti didnât move away and stayed still. The warmth through her palm was comforting.
âIâll make sure someone feeds you even if I go to Diloanaâs domain.â
Woof.
Roti barked. She usually didnât, so it was oddly funny that she barked the moment food was mentioned.
âDonât worry. Iâll leave instructions to take care of your meals.â
Woof woof!
âWhat? You want to say something? Are you telling me not to go?â
Woof.
âI donât want to go either. It could be my grave, you know. Who would want to go?â
Sensing the moment, Cordelia began pouring out all her frustrations while hugging Roti tightly.
âThere you are again.â
She should have been used to Baronâs sudden appearances by now, but they still startled her every time. She clutched her chest and turned around to find the water spirit standing behind her.
âYou must really cherish that dog.â
âWell⌠There wasnât much to attach myself to here. Rotiâs been my only real friend.â
âHm.â
Baron didnât know how to respond to such an honest answer, so he awkwardly changed the subject.
âAre you worried about what Master said yesterday?â
âYou mean about going to Diloanaâs domain? Nah, not at all. Itâs just a place where you get burned to death if you step wrong. Even Belluce is warned not to go near it, but sure. What could go wrong?â
âThat was quite the loaded statement.â
âIt wasnât loadedâit was a blunt blade, though apparently too dull for anyone to notice.â
âShall we take a walk?â
With a cryptic smile, Baron led her out of the stables. Cordelia followed, shoulders slumped.
âI understand what youâre worried about.â
âYou do?â
âYouâve only known him a month, and youâre risking your life for himâwith nothing in return.â
ââŚ.â
Cordelia snapped her head toward him. It was like he had read her mind.
There was nothing for her to gain from this dangerous journey. Only forced sacrifice.
Even when he felt her gaze, Baron didnât turn away.
âOnce Master regains his physical body, heâll never return to the Abrams estate. Naturally, Craigâs body will face its end too.â
âOf course. What would Master want in this backwater estate?â
âBut if people remain unaware of Craigâs death, the sole heir of the Abrams estate would be you.â
Cordelia stared at his lips in shock. It was a possibility she had never considered.
âIs it possible to hide Craigâs death?â
âYesâif you know skilled puppetry magic.â
âPuppetry? Whatâs that?â
âItâs magic used to manipulate unconscious people or corpses as if theyâre alive.â
It was a chilling concept, but to Cordelia, it sounded strangely tempting.
As they walked, they arrived at the northern tower. The guard at the entrance recognized Cordelia and greeted her respectfully. Baron had already disappeared, turning invisible.
âOf course, hiding it forever would be difficult. But with proper preservation, you could rule Abrams alone for about five years. After that, you can go wherever you wish.â
Once they had climbed high enough that the guards were no longer in sight, Baron reappeared.
âBut didnât they say a disciple canât leave their masterâs side? Doesnât that mean Iâd have to stay with him forever?â
âNormally, yes. But there are exceptions.â
âOh, like establishing a âStarâ? But Iâve only just begun studying magic. How could I establish a school in a few years?â
âNo, I meant like Master Leonardâs âStarââa single-line transmission where only one disciple carries on the legacy. In such cases, itâs common for master and disciple to live separately.â
âAhâŚâ
Cordelia immediately understood.
She stopped walking, and Baron circled quietly around her.
âSo what youâre saying isâŚâ
âOnce Leonard regains his body, youâll have a legitimate reason to remain here alone.â
âBut would Master even let me go?â
âDonât worry. Heâs softer than he looks. If you plead with tears, heâll allow it.â
Her once-frozen legs began to move. Her heavy head started turning again, sharp with thought.
After walking a while, they reached the top of the tower. The guard at the door recognized her and quickly bowed.
âGood day, Madam. What brings you here?â
âAh, IâŚâ
She hadnât planned anything, and was about to turn backâwhen she noticed a tiny water droplet only visible to her, pointing at Helenaâs door.
âI⌠came to see the Lady.â
âIâll prepare the door.â
Without a word of protest, the guard retrieved the key and opened the door to Helenaâs prison. The rusty hinges let out a blood-chilling screech.
Baron whispered in Cordeliaâs ear.
âBehold Helena Abramsâthe one who mocked and threatened you without end.â

Why am I so paranoid about the change to Roti’s behavior?
