Even though she kept telling herself so, Cordelia couldnât shake the feeling that something inside her was fracturing.
Every time she had to bow her head to them and endure humiliation to her face, it felt like the ground beneath her feet was crumbling.
Hiding her decaying heart, Cordelia greeted them gently.
âYou mustâve had a tiring journey. Welcome, Lily.â
âHmph!â
Despite snapping several times, when Cordelia responded with a smile, Lily seemed to lose interest and walked into the castle with Helena.
When they arrived in the drawing room, the maids quickly brought out tea. Three cups were set, but one sat growing cold. No one had offered Cordelia a seat.
She was so used to this kind of treatment that she didnât even think it strange anymore.
âBy the way, how is Craig doing?â
âSigh, donât even ask. His bodyâs recovered enough that he can walk around.â
âAnd?â
âBut the most important thing is his head. Thatâs the real problem.â
âWhat do you mean? Whatâs wrong?â
âItâs complicated. I hear wolves are sniffing around the castle, aiming for the countship. Ugh, my head.â
Helena pressed her temples as if she had a headache. Lilyâs face instantly filled with worry.
âHow bad is it? I thought he was almost fully recoveredâŚâ
âIf only that were true.â
âI shouldnât just be sitting here drinking tea. I need to see Craig right away.â
âWhat? Wait, Lily! Lily!â
Helena jumped up in alarm and tried to stop her, but it was useless. Lily had already rushed out the door, not even a glimpse of her skirt left behind.
âOh, that stubborn girl. You! What are you doing just standing there? Go after her!â
Helena shouted at Cordelia, who was standing still.
âMe?â
âWho else would I be talking to? Hurry up and go!â
Cordelia reluctantly, and very slowly, made her way to Leonardâs bedroom.
From outside the door, she could hear Lilyâs voice.
ââŚremember?â
When she opened the door, there stood the picture of a tragic heroine.
Lilyâs eyes shimmered with tears, as if they might fall like pearls at any moment.
âHow could youâhow could you forget all those childhood memories we shared?â
She acted like a woman abandoned by her lover. Leonard, on the other hand, looked utterly repulsed, his face twisted in annoyance.
The moment he made eye contact with Cordelia, he jerked his chin toward Lily.
âSheâs noisy. Get her out of here.â
âCraig! Donât you really remember me? Huh?â
âLily. Craigâs still recovering and tired. Why donât you go back and have tea with the ladyâŚâ
âHow dare you touch me?â
Lily snapped, slapping away Cordeliaâs hand. The force was strong enough to make Cordelia stumble slightly backward.
Of course, Lily didnât look back. Cordelia let out a small sigh and stepped toward her again.
âLily.â
âYou. Just because I left the castle, you think youâre the real mistress now? If it werenât for your precious bloodline, you wouldnât even be allowed in as a maid here, you know?â
ââŚâŚâ
âLow-born thing. Know your place and get out. I have things to discuss with Craig.â
Cordelia thought such words wouldnât hurt anymore. She believed her heart had calloused over. But just because you grow calluses doesnât mean youâre immune to wounds.
A sharp pain struck her chest, but she ignored the emotion.
âJust think of it as a dog barking.â
âIâm sorry, Lily. The lady saidââ
âWhat the hell are you?â
âCraig? Itâs me. Lily. Your little sister, Lily.â
âNo. You, move aside.â
Leonard, who had been lying in bed the whole time, sat up. He looked Cordelia straight in the eyes and spoke.
âYou used to look me right in the eyes and say whatever you wanted. Why are you acting so meek all of a sudden?â
â…Craig.â
âCraig?â
Both women turned to him. Leonard got out of bed.
âJust say what you want. Bottling it up makes you sick.â
âCraig!â
Lily, unable to endure being ignored any longer, shouted. Leonard responded with a clearly annoyed expression.
âYouâre hurting my ears. Hey, youâre the loudest and most vulgar one in this room. Get out.â
ââHeyâ? Craig, what are you saying? Iâm Lily! Your little sister, Lilââ
âYeah. I get it, youâre Lily or whatever. Just get out. I donât want to talk to some nouveau riche brat.â
âW-What? Nouveau riche?â
âBuying a noble title with moneyâwhatâs so great about being an Abrams? Acting all high and mighty.â
True, compared to Atilley, the Abrams were practically commoners, but that was not something that should come from someone in Craigâs body.
Lily was too shocked to even come up with a retort. She just stammered.
Meanwhile, Cordelia had to pinch her thigh to keep from laughing.
âYou even know what the Eight Sacred Houses are? She may look a little dumb, but sheâs a Vasquez. Sheâs on a different level than someone like you, with no pedigree or background.â
ââŚâŚâ
âGo back a few generations and your ancestors are practically peasants. Donât overstep.â
Leonard gave Lily a long, scornful lookâthe kind he was very good at. Her face crumpled miserably. Cordelia lowered her head as far as she could to hide her laughter.
âY-Youâre awful⌠hic I⌠I just⌠sobâ
âIf youâre going to cry, do it outside. Youâre too noisy.â
That final jab was the finishing blow.
Lily burst into tears and ran out of the room.
Cordelia shook with laughter once Lily was completely gone.
âWhy were you even trying to coddle someone like her?â
âLilyâpfftâthis is the first time Iâve seen her make that kind of face.â
âOf course it is. You were always bowing and scraping.â
Leonard replied bluntly. Cordelia straightened up after laughing so much, tears streaming down her cheeks.
âI feel so refreshed. I havenât laughed like that in ages.â
âIf youâre planning to divorce anyway, why bother bowing your head to a woman like her?â
âAre you asking because you donât know, or just to mock me?â
âWhat?â
âI canât divorce him right away. I donât have any savings either. So how could I possibly hold my head high in front of his family?â
Cordelia gave a bitter smile.
âThey brought me here for this very purpose.â
âThis purpose?â
âIâm not a person in this castle. Iâm just a vessel for Vasquez blood. There’s no reason to treat something like that as human.â
âSomething like that.â
It was a harsh and cold way to describe herself.
She acted like it was nothing, but Cordeliaâs eyes were filled with pain.
She quickly wiped it away and added cheerfully,
âAnd no matter how much I hate them, I canât leave this place empty-handed. If I want any alimony at all, the one in the weaker position has to grovel.â
Leonard scratched the back of his head and asked in his usual blunt tone,
âHow much do you need, anyway?â
ââŚSorry?â
âHow much do you need that youâre putting up with all this?â
A trivial questionâbut it knocked the breath out of her.
âMoney? Um, IâŚâ
She shouldâve just answered casually, but she was scared heâd mock her once he heard the amount.
To him, it was a meaningless numberâbut to her, it was a matter of life and death. It was humiliating.
Why was it that the pride she thought sheâd thrown away reared its head in moments like this?
Just say the number with a smile like always. Thatâs all you need to doâŚ
Her chest tightened, and her stomach churned. Cordelia bit her lip and couldnât answer. Sensing the heavy atmosphere, Leonard spoke.
âHey, Iââ
âI should get going.â
She forced her downturned lips into a smile and took a few steps back.
âI thought Iâd thrown away all my pride, but I guess some of itâs still left. I wonât come back for a while.â
âWait.â
âGet some rest.â
Cordelia left the room with a blank expression.
It was the first time. The first time Cordelia had ever left before Leonard told her to.
Leonard stared at the spot where sheâd stood for a long while, then turned around.
âDid I say something wrong? I just asked how much she needed.â
âOh dear, Master. You asked her how much her life is worthâof course that hurts her pride.â
Baron, poking his head out of the water glass, shook it solemnly.
âHow could you be so cruel? Lady Cordelia has been so devoted to youâŚâ
âHah. Devoted? All she did was chatter and annoy me.â
âMy word! She came every single day to serve and keep you company. Thatâs no small task!â
âDid I ask her to? She came on her own because she wanted something from me. Iâve seen plenty like her.â
Leonard scoffed. Baron started fake sobbing dramatically.
âPoor Lady Cordelia⌠to hear such heartless wordsâŚâ
âSince when were you two so close?â
âShe cherished you, even knowing your true identity, and never once tried to use it. That kind of person is rare. In Atilley, full of wolves and jackals, sheâs one of a kind.â
âAlright, alright. I get it. Maybe I went too far with one commentâŚâ
Leonard raised his hands in surrender under Baronâs relentless nagging. Baron pressed a wrinkled forehead with concern.
âNo matter how fallen she is, sheâs still a Vasquez. Your great-great-grandfather Delon Atilleyâs second son married into that family.â
âI know, I know.â
âWhen Lady Cordelia comes back, please treat her kindly.â
Leonard, half irritated and half resigned, agreed. But sadly, he wouldnât be able to keep that promise.
Because Cordelia kept her word.
She stopped coming by his roomâjust like all her visits had been a lie

I bet Lily locked her up or something…
