Chapter 109
Lloyd stared coldly at Kallian and spoke.
âWhen I arrived at the castle, they said you had left Denian behind and gone alone to the cottage. I found that strangeâŚâ
As he raised one hand, the sound of marching boots echoed from behind. Five imperial soldiers appeared at his back.
âGood thing I brought soldiers with me,â he said coolly.
The soldiers, wearing armor engraved with the imperial crest, drew their swords.
Kallian reacted instinctively â stepping in front of Yuliana to shield her.
That simple movement made Lloydâs expression twist with anger.
It looked as if he were the intruder, and Kallian was the one protecting Yuliana.
Then, Yuliana stepped out from behind Kallian and walked over to stand beside Lloyd.
Kallian frowned slightly in confusion.
âYou two⌠know each other?â he asked quietly.
Lloydâs brows furrowed â Kallian was speaking as if he didnât recognize him.
Yulianaâs tone turned cold.
âYou should leave now.â
Her deliberate choice to stand beside Lloyd and put distance between herself and Kallian left him momentarily stunned.
Now that he thought about it, Denianâs hair color was just like Lloydâs.
He had assumed the boy only resembled Yuliana, but looking at that pale hair, one troubling thought came to mind â one he didnât want to accept.
âDidnât you say Denian had no father?â
Yuliana knew exactly what he was thinking, but she didnât bother to deny or explain.
âWould you really believe the words of a three-year-old?â
She was right â she had never once said Denianâs father was gone.
It was Kallian who had taken the childâs innocent words at face value.
Ignoring his question, Yuliana turned to Lloyd and spoke calmly.
âHeâs just a traveler who lost his memory. He was about to leave anyway, so please tell your men to lower their swords.â
At that, Lloyd finally understood why Kallian seemed so strange.
A guest whoâd lost his memoryâŚ
He studied Yuliana silently, as if to confirm what she truly wanted.
She didnât even glance at Kallian â her stiff posture made it obvious she was uncomfortable having him here.
If that was the case, Lloyd didnât understand why she had taken him in at all.
Still, he gestured to his men.
The soldiers, who had been standing tensely with their blades raised, slowly lowered them.
Even then, Kallian didnât relax.
He might not have his full memory, but he still recognized the imperial insignia on their armor â and it made him uneasy.
Something about Yuliana standing among those soldiers felt wrong. His chest tightened with a strange sense of dread.
Suppressing that feeling, he asked quietly, âAre you truly all rightâŚ?â
Yuliana still didnât look at him.
âI will be, once you leave this place,â she replied coldly.
ââŚâ
Seeing her standing straight and composed beside Lloyd, Kallian could only give up.
âThank you⌠for everything,â he said softly.
Without another word, he bowed politely to Yuliana â who didnât even glance his way â and walked past the soldiers, leaving the cottage.
Lloyd watched him go, his eyes sharp and wary until Kallian finally disappeared from sight.
Only then did he turn to Yuliana, his expression dark with anger.
ââŚWhy was that man here?â
Yuliana, looking tired of the interrogation, turned to head back toward the castle.
âHe was injured and lost his memory. I simply let him stay for a while.â
Suddenly, Lloyd grabbed her wrist and pulled her around to face him.
The unexpected strength in his grip made her eyes widen.
âDid you pity him because heâs Denianâs biological father?â
âHe doesnât even remember who I am,â she said quietly.
Lloyd let out a hollow, bitter laugh.
âAnd you think that makes it acceptable?â
âWhy should I have to justify myself to you?â
Her cold tone was sharp â a clear warning that he was crossing a line.
Lloydâs grip slackened. Yuliana slipped free from his hand and immediately moved away.
She needed to gather Denianâs belongings from the cottage â things she hadnât taken when she left in a hurry the previous day.
Lloyd stared after her, a troubled look on his face.
âHave you forgotten how that man treated you? Why you had to flee here with Denian in the first place?â
Yuliana said nothing.
As he watched her small back, Lloyd suddenly frowned, an uneasy thought striking him.
âWait⌠did he meet Denian?â
It hadnât been intentional. She had only saved Kallian by chance â while she happened to be with Denian.
When Yuliana didnât deny it, anger flared in Lloydâs eyes.
âAre you out of your mind? He may not remember now, but what if his memory returns? What if he realizes Denian is his son?â
It was rare for Lloyd to lose his composure like this, and Yulianaâs expression hardened.
âEven if that happens, itâs none of your concern.â
Lloyd raked a hand through his hair irritably, his tone twisting with frustration.
âWhat, do you want Denian to meet his father now? Did you suddenly grow soft, thinking heâs still the boyâs parent?â
His words cut deep â far beyond what was acceptable.
Yuliana glared at him fiercely.
âHow could he say that?â
She knew exactly how Kallian felt about Denian â knew what he would do if he discovered the truth.
There was no world where she would ever intentionally let them meet.
Her lips trembled as she bit them hard.
Still⌠she couldnât deny that she had allowed them to spend time together.
She had trusted Kallianâs request, and because of that, Denian had been exposed to danger.
Lloyd was right â she should never have let Kallian in at all.
Seeing the guilt harden her shoulders, Lloydâs tone softened.
âWe need to move somewhere else immediately. Who knows when heâll regain his memory and come back here.â
Yuliana looked startled. âMove? Where?â
Ignoring her hesitation, Lloyd continued calmly.
âTo Silverstel. Come with me â Iâve already arranged everything.â
She had indeed been planning to relocate once Kallian left â but Lloyd had no place in that plan.
âNo. Denian and I wonât go to Silverstel.â
âThen you mean to stay here?â
âNo. Denian and I will go elsewhere â on our own. I donât want to rely on you anymore.â
âWhat do you mean by that?â
âExactly what I said.â
Her voice was firm, unwavering.
Lloyd frowned, but then tried to soften his tone, speaking gently.
âIf Iâm by your side, he wonât realize Denian is his son.â
But Yuliana shook her head.
Even if Lloyd stayed, it was only a matter of time before Kallian remembered.
He had already seen Denianâs dark spirit energy â the truth would come out eventually.
âThereâs no need for that anymore,â she said quietly. âI just donât want to be involved with either of you any longer.â
Lloydâs gentle expression suddenly hardened, his eyes turning cold.
âYouâre comparing me to him?â
âThatâs not what I meant,â she replied quickly. âDonât you see? I just want to start over â somewhere no one knows me or Denian.â
Her voice trembled, pleading â but Lloydâs face remained cold as ice.
âYou speak of âstarting overâ so easily,â he said slowly.
There it was again â that same chilling look from long ago.
The one heâd had when sheâd tried to leave him once before â the look heâd given her before dragging a blade across his own wrist to stop her.
âTo you, the past is nothing but a burden, isnât it? Including Valdormer⌠and me?â
Yuliana froze under his gaze, her breath catching.
âIâm sorry,â Lloyd said softly, though his tone was anything but gentle. âBut I canât allow that.â
His cold hand closed tightly around her wrist once more.
âMy new beginning⌠includes you.â
âLloyd!â she gasped, struggling to pull free â but his grip only tightened.
âDonât even think of leaving me. Even if I die, Iâll still stay by your side.â
Yuliana stared at him, horrified â and then Lloyd gave a bitter, almost mocking smile.
âAh⌠but I suppose I already did die once â and here I am, keeping that promise.â
