Chapter 74
Knock, knock.
Riena, who was busily getting ready to go out early in the morning, froze at the unexpected sound.
No one was supposed to visit her todayâand certainly not at dawn, when the sky had only just begun to pale.
Who could it be?
Puzzled, she opened the door.
ââŚCallis? What brings you here so early?â
âHaha⌠itâs been a while, Your Grace.â
Riena blinked in surprise. The man before her looked utterly exhaustedâdark shadows hung so deep under his eyes they nearly reached his chin.
âDid something happen?â she asked, concern softening her tone.
Callis scratched the back of his neck awkwardly, his words tumbling out haltingly.
âAhem⌠I sincerely apologize for showing up at such an hour without warning, butâŚâ
His preamble was overly polite, even stiff. The more he hesitated, the more a faint sense of dread began to rise in Rienaâs eyes. Just what on earth is he about to sayâŚ?
âPlease save me, Your Grace.â
ââŚWhat?â
Caught completely off guard, Riena blinked.
âPardon?â
âPlease! Iâm really going to die. My lungs feel scorched, and my ears are ringing!â
Callis looked on the verge of tears. He barely stopped himself from blurting out that his superior had been smoking cigars nonstop beside him all day and cursing like it was a second language.
The reason the Duke had become like that was simple. Of course, overwork and stress played a partâbut the real cause began the moment Callis stopped him from visiting Her Grace yesterday.
And since then⌠life had been pure torment. Terrifying, exhausting torment.
When the royal managers arrived a bit earlier than expected, just before dawn, Callis had technically been supposed to hand over duties to them. But instead, heâd thrown all of it aside and sprinted straight here the moment the sun rose.
As he rambled nonsense, Riena frowned slightly.
Unlike the Duke, who lashed out whenever frustrated, she always tried to understand firstâto assess calmly. That gentle expression of hers made Callisâs nose sting.
Sniffling once, he hastily gathered himself.
âIâll explain everything on the way. Please, just come with me to see His Grace⌠just this once?â
Surely, someone this kind-hearted couldnât turn down a desperate man like him.
ââŚIâm sorry,â she said softly. âBut I have somewhere to be today.â
ââŚWhat?â
The color drained from Callisâs face.
âWhâwhere are you going? Couldnât you go after visiting? Iâll personally escort you later!â
He sounded pitiful nowâbut what pride was worth his life?
Pressing his hands together like a prayer, Callis all but begged.
âPlease, just once! I swear thereâs no danger, nothing to fear! Just see His Grace for a momentââ
âSo⌠heâs not sick, then?â
Her brow arched slightly, her tone calm.
ââŚWhat?â
The question threw him. For a moment, his eyes darted around wildly.
Wait⌠does she think my masterâs sick?
Then, after a second of frantic thought, he nodded decisively.
âYes! Very sick. Terribly ill. Heâs suffering badly right now.â
âMmm. So heâs not sick, then.â
Of course, she could spot a lie from a mile away. She didnât know exactly what Callis meant by save me, but she could guess the situation well enough.
No doubt the Duke was lashing out at anyone within reach again. Sheâd seen it beforeâenough to imagine it clearly now.
âIâm really sorry,â Riena said gently, smiling. âBut Iâm busy today. I promised to help with the homecoming ceremony.â
âWhat? No, Your Grace, pleaseââ
âTell him to get some proper rest. He doesnât like flower tea, but chamomile might helpâitâs good for fatigue.â
The best remedy for that monstrous Duke is YOU! Callis screamed inwardly, though he dared not say it aloud.
Her kind voice sounded like a death sentence to his ears.
âActually,â Riena added kindly, âyou should get some rest too, Callis. You look exhausted. Well then, Iâll be going.â
With a polite smile, she gave a small nod and shut the door firmly behind her.
The sound of the latch clicking felt like the final toll of a bell.
Callis stood frozen before it, unable to even lift a foot inside. His throat bobbed nervously. He could already see what would happen when he returned alone.
He was doomed.
âRena! Youâre here early!â
Riena smiled lightly and set down the heavy bundle she had carried all the way.
Sharonâs eyes went wide.
âWhoa, whatâs all this?â
âSome snacks for the workers helping out today.â
âWhat? Snacks? Waitâdid you make these yourself?â
âMm-hmm.â
Riena lowered her gaze shyly.
The simple gesture glowed with such natural beauty that Sharon couldnât help but click her tongue in awe. Sheâd always thought Riena was beautifulâbut lately, she seemed to shine.
Maybe it was true what people said: love made you more beautiful.
Chuckling to herself, Sharonâs expression abruptly twisted. The image of that mad Duke flashed in her mind, making her stomach churn.
Ugh. How did a man like that win her heart?
She was curiousâbut she also knew that imagining it would only make her skin crawl.
Shaking her head to banish the thought, Sharon suddenly remembered someone elseâthe navy man named Henry, Rienaâs old flame.
He was among the Beremark sailors returning to Florian by tomorrow evening for the homecoming ceremony.
The Duke of Venachert, owner of the new resort⌠and the naval lieutenant just back from war.
If those two meet in Florian⌠things could get loud.
âSharon?â
âHuh? Ohâyeah?â
âIâll hand out the snacks later. Letâs start working first.â
Rienaâs gentle voice pulled her out of her thoughts. She must have assumed Sharon was staring off at the food bundles.
Looking at her, Sharonâs eyes grew misty. Sheâs such a good personâŚ
The guilt hit her hard. Thinking such scandalous things about someone so pure felt downright shameful.
Right. Enough nonsense. Focus on work!
Steeling herself, Sharon nodded firmly. But when Riena smiled back at herâwarm, serene, radiantâanother thought slipped through despite her best efforts.
Wait⌠doesnât this feel like the setup to a tragic love drama?
That sinful little thought, Sharon decided, sheâd have to confess to Riena someday.
âShe said sheâs busy.â
ââŚYour Grace, I did try my best to convince her,â Callis said weakly.
âAnd what exactly did you do there, then? Have tea and gossip?â
âNo, sir! I swear I didnât!â
Cold sweat trickled down his spine. Heâd known this would happenâbut the reality was far worse than anything he imagined.
Muttering a curse, Dante bit down on his cigar.
Click.
Another thin plume of white smoke drifted upward. He had already gone through half a box today alone.
In the past, heâd never smoked this muchâtwo, maybe three a day at most.
At this rate, even he was starting to wonder if this wasnât stress from work but rather⌠something far more pathetic.
A lovesick fool.
Ridiculous.
Clicking his tongue, he exhaled sharply and crushed the cigar into the ashtray.
âThatâs what she said when I told her I was ill? That she was relieved?â
âN-no, she wasnât indifferent. She just seemed⌠glad you werenât seriously sickâŚâ
âShut your mouth.â
The icy tone made Callis flinch and clamp his lips shut.
âShe went out to help with⌠what was it? A ceremony?â
Dante laughed under his breath, humorless and bitter.
He remembered all too clearly the nights heâd stayed awake tending to her when she was sickâfeeding her water, giving her medicine, changing her clothes, wiping her skin with trembling hands. Heâd done everything, absolutely everything.
And now she couldnât even spare a moment for him.
His jaw tightened. The next cigar died a violent death beneath his palm, crushed like a final scream.
Callis could barely breathe. The air in the office was thick, suffocatingâlike standing before a volcano about to erupt.
He had a plan once. Heâd thought to hand over responsibilities to the other managers, leave the enraged Duke in Rienaâs care, and finally get some rest himself.
But that plan had died the moment she refused to come.
Callisâs chest deflated with a long, despairing sigh.
Then Dante suddenly pushed back his chair and stood.
âLetâs go.â
ââŚS-sir? G-go where?â
âWhere do you think?â His eyes gleamed dangerously. âShe went to help with that ceremony, didnât she?â
âWaitâyou mean youâre going there yourself?â
Callisâs jaw dropped.
This time, he knewâhe was about to owe someone else a very deep apology.
