Chapter 10Â
Magic and a Kiss
Amiâs younger sister, Kotoko, had come over to visit.
âSorry for bringing my sister all of a suddenâŠâ
âOh, no, itâs fine.â
Apparently, Ami had accidentally mentioned Chamomile in conversation.
Kotoko was a first-year middle schooler, a cheerful girl who loved anime.
âUm⊠can you really use magic?â
So pure and cute.
Ami used to be like this when she was little, didnât she?
Kotokoâs hair was long, tied loosely in the back.
Ami was the boyish type, while Kotoko was the complete opposite.
âWanna see?â
âYes!â
Chamomile pulled a wand out of nowhere and made a sphere of water appear in midair.
Since we were indoors, water was probably the safest choice.
Fire wouldâve been dangerous, after all.
âAmazingâŠâ
âHey, Kotoko-chan. Can you keep this a secret?â
âHuh? Why? Itâs so cool.â
âWell, if Chamomile became famous, she might not be able to stay here anymore, you know?â
In a Japan without magic, who knows what could happen?
She might be treated like a sideshow⊠or attacked.
Used as an experiment⊠locked away somewhere.
Just imagining it sent a chill down my spine.
âIf that happens, Iâll have to leave this place.â
âWhat?â
âWhat kind of face is that, Yuya? Donât worry, that wonât happen.â
Chamomile leaving
Iâd never even thought about that possibility.
âYouâre pale⊠are you okay?â
Ami peered into my face with concern.
Was I really feeling sick?
âIâll take care of Yuya. Ami, you and your sister should go home.â
Chamomile gently but firmly sent them away.
They didnât seem to want to leave, butâ
well, if I was sick, they couldnât really argue.
âNow thenâŠâ
As I lay in bed, Chamomile sat beside me, resting her chin on her hand, gazing into my eyes.
She was really close.
Suddenly, my heart started pounding.
Weird⊠whatâs happening to me?
Chamomile raised her hand in front of me.
A faint light glimmered in her palm.
âWhat are youââ
âYour color looks fine⊠I used appraisal magic just to check. Youâre not sick.
But I went ahead and cast a little healing spell just in case.â
Chamomile smiled softly.
When I looked up, our eyes met.
Her emerald-green eyesâ
so clear, so beautiful.
âYour eyes are beautiful.â
The words slipped out of my mouth before I could stop them.
Oh no, was that creepy?
âAh, s-sorry. If that made you uncomfortable, just forget I saidââ
âNot at all. Iâm really happy.â
Her cheeks flushed pink.
She was supposed to be older than me, but right now she looked impossibly cute.
âI love you, Yuya.â
ââŠHuh?â
Chamomile⊠loves me?
Her eyes were seriousâit wasnât a joke.
âReally?â
âOf course.â
My face burned hot.
Whatâs happening to me?
âI⊠I thinkâŠâ
This strange feelingâ
something Iâd never experienced before.
Could this be⊠what it means to like someone?
âI⊠like you tooâŠ?â
âWhy the question mark? You mean you havenât realized it yet?â
Chamomile chuckled softly. âThatâs rightâyouâre still just a kid, huh?â she murmured, and thenâ
she pressed her lips to mine.
Her tongue slid gently into my mouth.
ââ!â
âYour face is bright red. Was that your first kiss?â
âY-you went straight for a deep kiss! Of course itâs my firstâthis is the first time Iâve ever liked someone tooâŠâ
My heart pounded so hard it felt like it might explode.
But it didnât feel badâjust warm and dizzy and unreal.
For a while, I just sat there, completely dazed.
The next day.
âSchool starts again tomorrow⊠ugh.â
I packed my bag with everything Iâd need.
Summer vacation was over, and the new semester was beginning.
If only it couldâve stayed summer forever.
Since that day, Chamomile had been spending a lot of time right by my side.
Not exactly clingy, but⊠very touchy.
A lot more physical contact than before.
I still wasnât used to it, so I often ended up pulling away.
Can you blame me?
Iâm a total beginner at this whole love thing.
Chamomile, on the other hand, seemed much more experiencedâprobably because sheâd lived longer than me.
âPatheticâŠâ I sighed.
âSo, youâll be going to school every day now, right? Iâll miss you.â
âIâll be home by evening, donât worry.â
The way Chamomileâs expression fell was adorable.
Sheâd been more open and honest ever since confessing to me.
âIâm just glad you finally learned to smile naturally, Yuya.â
Huh?
What kind of face had I been making before?
