Chapter : 11
âCome to think of it, you worked through the night yesterday too! Health is the most important thing for a pregnant woman. You should really cut back on your work for the time being. Especially when thereâs a chance you might have conceived a childâŚâŚâ
What child?
âLaura. Please calm down. Do you really think children are that easy to make?â
âBut still! They say you have to look up at the sky to pick a star. AndâŚâŚ you saw it, didnât you? That star. While holding His Graceâs hands tightly.â
As if that werenât enough, Laura exclaimed that it wasnât just any ordinary sky. It was the enormous, incredible sky known as Leon Obsidian.
Yes. I did see that sky. The problem is, I wasnât the one who saw it.
âCome to think of it, that does feel a little unfair.â
âPardon?â
âNothing. Just talking to myself.â
I shook my head, telling her not to worry about it.
It seemed my thoughts had slipped out before I realized it.
If I at least had the memories, maybe I wouldnât feel this wronged.
And yet, I had somehow gotten dragged into all this over something I hadnât even done.
I had no idea who I was supposed to complain to about it, and it left me utterly at a loss.
âAnyway. Even so, it was only one night.â
âIt may have been one night, but that doesnât necessarily mean it only happened once, right?â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âJust what I said. The number of times you looked up at the sky that dayâŚâŚ could have been several, couldnât it?â
ââŚâŚâ
Good heavens. Laura.
My head went blank at this completely unexpected approach.
Unfortunately, there was no way to confirm it.
How was I supposed to ask?
âExcuse me. Iâm really sorry, but how many times did we do it that night?â
There was no way I could ask that.
Just imagining it made me dizzy, so I squeezed my eyes shut.
âOh my, what could you possibly be remembering to squeeze your eyes shut like that? You must have recalled a scene intense enough to make you dizzy, huh?â
âIâm being serious right now.â
âOh, whatâs there to be serious about? You should be excited! I mean, itâs the Grand Duke of Bernstein!â
Laura clenched both fists in excitement and exclaimed.
âWhen he was a priest, he was weighed down with all those labels like âforbiddenâ and âfalse advertisement,â but now heâs simply an ordinary man. No, heâs the perfect marriage prospect every young lady in Orden is dying to have!â
ââŚâŚâ
âYouâve actually won over someone that incredible, Your Excellency!â
I didnât.
Iâm telling you, I didnât do anything.
I just woke up and found him rolling right into my hands.
âIs that all? Other noblewomen have looked down on you behind your back this whole time, too. Especially that white fox of a Countess Oscar!â
Laura ground her teeth, saying that even hearing the womanâs name irritated her.
âShe ruled high society as its flower and slandered you, didnât she? She even incited the other noblewomen to join in!â
âAnd thatâs not all.â
Laura continued.
âHer younger brother, too! He was always pestering you about marriage. Once people find out about the relationship between you and His GraceâŚâŚ theyâll all go completely crazy.â
âJust imagining it makes me feel so refreshed.â
Laura added with a sly grin.
âThis wonât do. I should tell the servants right now and make sure the rumor spreadsâŚâŚâ
âNo! Absolutely not! You must never let anyone else know about this!â
âWhat? Why?â
Laura asked with a dissatisfied look at my desperate outburst. She clearly wanted to blab about it immediately and couldnât understand why I was stopping her.
Of course, itâs not that I donât understand how Laura feels.
She had worried about me more than anyone.
But this absolutely cannot happen!
I still havenât sorted out my own feelings. And more importantly, I havenât even finished discussing this with the person actually involved!
âListen carefully, Laura. Iâm only telling you this because I trust you. You absolutely cannot tell anyone outside.â
âWhat are you going to tell me now?â
Laura frowned as though she was already anxious about whatever I was about to say.
I took a deep breath for a moment before speaking seriously.
The truth isâŚâŚ
ââŚâŚItâs true that we slept together, but I donât remember it.â
âPardon?â
âItâs true that I caused the accident, but I donât remember anything about that day at all. I justâŚâŚ woke up and found things had turned out that way, I suppose? It happened without me even knowingâŚâŚ. Well, of course, I did go along with it too.â
No. This is wrong. No matter what I say, it sounds strange.
But there was nothing I could do.
Even if I told her the truth about transmigration and another soul inhabiting my body, she would never believe me.
As unfair as it was, I thought it would be better to take responsibility for the accident myself.
So I tried my best to explain.
âYour Excellency.â
Laura, who had been silently listening, stared at me intently before soon giving me a gentle smile.
Ah, what a relief. Perhaps she had understood what I meant.
I was just beginning to feel relieved whenâ
âAre you joking right now? Surely you arenât trying to say that since you donât remember it, youâre going to pretend none of it ever happened, are you?â
âW-What?â
âOh, my goodness! I didnât raise you to be such an irresponsible person, Your Excellency!â
What is she talking about? I have a separate nanny.
And sheâs only four years older than me in the first place.
Of course, she had helped me in many ways behind the scenes, but could that really count as raising me?
Laura looked at me with profound disappointment.
Afraid she might start treating me like some trashy person who caused an accident and refused to clean up the mess, I hurriedly smiled.
âN-No, of course not. What I mean isâŚâŚ I just donât remember how many times we looked at the sky. Yes, thatâs what I was trying to say.â
âRight? Oh, goodness. You almost made me disappointed in you, Your Excellency. Our Marquis is an incredibly responsible person, after all!â
ââŚâŚRight. Of course. If you took away my sense of responsibility, thereâd be nothing left of me but a corpse. A corpse.â
I gave an awkward laugh and nodded stiffly.
The quill in my hand seemed to be growing damp with cold sweat.
âCome to think of it, youâre right. Even if you didnât remember and said you werenât going to take responsibility, it wouldnât matter.â
âHuh?â
âYou saw the articles, didnât you? His Grace confessed everything himself, so heâs now on the verge of being dismissed from his position. What do you think that means?â
âW-What does it mean?â
âIt means His Grace feels responsible for what happened too. As expected of a former priest and the commander of the Holy Knights!â
Laura smiled contentedly, saying there couldnât possibly be a more perfect match.
Of course, I felt as though the darkness before my eyes had only grown thicker.
âBut why are you telling me not to let anyone around us know?â
âIf you give me permission, I could run outside right now and tell everyone,â Laura said, shrugging her shoulders.
âI need time to think. Itâs not just anythingâitâs a matter that affects my entire life, isnât it? This isnât something I can decide in just a few days.â
âThatâs true, butâŚâŚâ
Laura moved her lips as though she had something else to say, but after seeing my serious expression, she closed her mouth again.
âAll right. I understand. ButâŚâŚ I donât know if that will be enough. Everyone is currently desperate to find out who the person who captured His Graceâs heart is.â
âDonât worry about that. Thereâs no way theyâll figure out that the person is me.â
Even as I said it, I let out a hollow little laugh.
Who would ever think of Erna Zaherette as his partner?
It was a combination that wouldnât occur to anyone even after wracking their brains a hundred times.
Yes, exactly. So there wouldnât be any problems for the time being.
Everything would be fine.
I was certain of it.
And yetâŚâŚ
***
âWhat are you going to do now?â
ââŚâŚâ
âYou said it would definitely be fine! And, just so you know, I really havenât said a single word to anyone!â
Laura shouted at me, almost hounding me for an answer.
At her words, I pressed my lips tightly together.
Right.
What on earth was this situation?

The newspapers and gossip sheets covering my desk were plastered with my name.
It would have been nice if that were where it ended.
