Chapter 20
Who else could it be? Just another one-sided crush.
Iâve always had a tendency to fall easily for people who treat me well.
In that sense, Iâm pretty similar to Giselle.
But the difference is I’m less proactive than she is.
Yeah⌠Giselle was incredibly brave.
I could never do that!
And besides, the best thing about a one-sided crush is that you can quit anytime⌠as long as the other person never finds out.
I was planning to keep it a secret, but since everyone in this family is so obsessed with my marriage, I blurted it out without thinking.
They all smirked like it was completely impossible.
Why? Lurbihi is basically everything women could ever want!
Heâs kind and gentle, has a beautiful smile, and has a warm heart. Honestly, you donât find someone like that easily.
As I sat there smiling to myself, everyone stared at me like Iâd lost my mind.
Rosa nudged my shoulder.
âDo you even know what a priest does? Sure, they can marry, but if he becomes a high-ranking priest, that might not be possible. And youâre a princess. If you marry a priest, it could even cause religious conflict. The temple already interferes, saying religion comes before royal power. Do you think that would go well?â
I pouted.
âIâm not even saying Iâm going to marry him. Arenât you getting ahead of yourself?â
âYou should be realistic. Why like someone you wonât even marry?â
Judging by their expressions, they clearly thought I was being foolish.
Honestly⌠itâs just a crush. Whatâs the big deal?
If I actually said I wanted to marry him, theyâd probably lose their minds.
âThatâs true. Think of someone more realistic,â Lucas added.
Even him?
Ugh, I shouldnât have said anything. I havenât even started anything yet, and I already have opposition.
So I brushed it off, saying it was just a one-sided crush. Everyone went, âAh, figures,â and the conversation ended surprisingly easily.
They were just excited listing candidates earlierâso why is Lurbihi suddenly âimpossibleâ?
***
The next day, Lurbihi came out quickly to greet me when he heard I had arrived at the priestâs residence behind the grand chapel.
It looked like he had just finished massâhe was still wearing his golden vestments.
I smiled awkwardly.
âI think I came too early. You didnât have to rushâŚâ
âItâs alright. I was speaking with a believer about prayer and ended up being late myself.â
He gently guided me by the back into a rose-filled garden.
We sat and talked like last time.
âDid you return safely that day?â
That day Oh, the last time we met.
âYes, of course.â
âAre you still seeing that person?â
âThat person⌠you mean Sir Adrian?â
ââŚYes.â
Ah, right. Adrian came to see me that day.
Well, everyone in the capital knows I got dumped by him, so of course he would know too.
Is he asking if we got back together?
Priests arenât usually interested in peopleâs relationships, though.
I answered cheerfully,
âI donât know if you heard, but we broke off our engagement.â
âI know.â
âMm, yes. He came that day to argue about something.â
âTo argue?â
âYes. His personality is a bit⌠strange. Anyway!â
I shook my head, and the ribbon of my loose bonnet came undone, fluttering in the wind.
âBy the way, did you hear that I predicted a murder case recently?â
âI read the article. I thought you might bring it up.â
As I tied the ribbon again, I spoke honestly.
âIn my world⌠well, since youâve seen my past, Iâll speak freely. Where I come from, if you recklessly predict someoneâs fate or talk about life and death, youâre punished. I havenât experienced that yet, but if I keep doing this, I probably will someday. When that happens⌠I donât know what I should do.â
Lurbihi looked at me with sharp, thoughtful eyes.
âIt is the same here. Interfering with fate is not our role. So do not say everything you see. If someone is destined to die, tell them to reconcile with their family. If someone will fall ill, tell them to take care of their health. That is all we can do. Just as you have been doing, continue to offer small guidance.â
His advice was simple, but it was exactly what I needed.
That Iâm doing well.
That he supports what I do and watches over me.
That alone was enough.
I tapped my thigh lightly and smiled, feeling relieved.
âAs expected, talking to you makes me feel much better.â
Lurbihi lowered his gaze and spoke quietly.
âWhen you rely on me like this⌠I donât know what I should do.â
At that moment, the wind tousled his light brown hair, and his emerald eyes shimmered in the sunlight.
Holding my breath, I asked,
âWhat do you mean?â
âI feel guilty that you rely on me as if I were a pure and righteous priest.â
But you are pure and righteous⌠How much more could you be?
I cleared my throat, trying not to show my thoughts.
âWell⌠you are more upright and noble than anyone I know. I donât understand why you put yourself down.â
He looked at me like it was the first time he had ever heard such words.
What? Why does he look so shocked?
âŚWait, was I not supposed to say that to a priest?
His eyes held a faint sadness, but his lips were smilingâit was contradictory, yet somehow sacred.
What do I do? If a priest is this beautiful, the believers will be in trouble.
Lurbihi smiled more brightly.
âSo that is the kind of person you are. Last time, you even cried after seeing my pastâŚâ
Huh? Did he just define me in his head?
What did you decide about me? I want to know too.
He placed his hand over mine and said quietly,
âI am not as pure as you think.â
ââŚ?â
In what sense?
âIâŚâ
He trailed off.
Why stop there?
I felt oddly impatient.
He looked straight into my eyes.
âI hope you do not get involved with him again.â
Huh? He means Adrian?
I looked around awkwardly, thinking about how to respond.
âAdrian is just⌠well, yes! He treated me like a younger sister. Thatâs why we broke off the engagement. Itâs not like weâre involved or anything. Heâs just Lucasâs friend, so we see each other sometimes. Haha âŚâ
I ended up rambling unnecessarily, and my face suddenly felt hot.
Heâs worried about Adrian? I didnât expect that. Does that mean heâs at least a little interested in me âŚ?
Lurbihi spoke firmly.
âI briefly saw your future. He is not your partner.â
That hit harder than expected.
Heâs not my partner?
So⌠donât waste energy on him?
Ah⌠so thatâs what he meant. Heâs just telling me that, not because heâs interested in me.
Looking at his expression, the soft, almost affectionate behavior from earlier felt like my imagination. He was just his usual kind self as a priest.
âSo youâre saying I shouldnât get close to him because heâs not my destined partner?â
Lurbihi frowned slightly.
âWas my explanation insufficient?â
âNo. I understand.â
I stood up, feeling a bit sulky.
Of course. I shouldnât have misunderstood.
Ugh⌠why did I get my hopes up like an idiot?
At that moment, Lurbihi grabbed my hand and stood up abruptly.
Then he said directly,
âIt seems my explanation was insufficient. The truth is⌠I feel jealous when you are with him.â
ââŚWhat?â
Waitâwhat?
Looking again, Lurbihi looked tense.
The pleading look in his eyes, the slight tremble in his lips, the way he held my hand tightly as if he wouldnât let goâ
And his deep voice echoed in my ears.
âYou knew thatâs how I felt, didnât you?â
Me? How would I know that?
His eyes, impossible to read, felt like a deep abyss pulling me in.
What is this feeling?
My heart started pounding.
Thump, thump, thumpâ
Is that my heartbeat?
Before I knew it, he was so close that I could see my flushed face reflected in his clear eyes.
