CHAPTER 31
As she waited for an answer, the woman looked Meyna up and down.
Meyna gathered herself and replied.
âHeâs the superior I used to serve.â
âAre you perhaps… a sodomite?â
â…What?â
This time, it was impossible to stay calm.
âWho are you talking about?â
What did that word even mean again?
It wasnât just that sheâd never said it aloud beforeâshe could hardly recall ever hearing it.
And among all the many fancy titles attached to Caliph, âsodomiteâ had certainly never been one of them.
âWho else? Caliph, of course.â
The woman answered as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
âAre you busy?â
âAâA little?â
In truth, she wasnât busy at all, but her instincts made her answer that way.
âNot too busy, right? Then listen to me for a bit.â
…I shouldâve said I was busy!
It was too late for regret.
The woman grabbed Meyna firmly by the arm and started walking briskly across the street.
âI work over there.â
She stopped abruptly and pointed with her chin.
<Red Taste>
The sign glowed a deep red.
It suited her perfectly.
âWe sell food and drinks to citizens, and secretly sell hallucinogens to holy knights.â
â…I see.â
âOver the years, hundreds of holy knights from all over the Empire have found their way to our shop, but Caliph? Never once.â
âYes. He never used hallucinogens.â
âBut that day, he burst through the door and demanded the strongest one we had. Said he wanted to sleep without nightmares.â
â…â
âThe moment the famous Caliph Lennox appeared, the place went crazy.â
She spoke calmly at first, but then her tone shifted to anger.
âAnd then, do you know what he said to me after picking me out?â
â…What did he say?â
âI hate redheads. Disgusting redheads.â
âGasp.â
Meyna quietly gasped in shock.
The woman spat on the ground and continued, her expression twisted in disgust.
âAnyway, he wanted the strongest hallucinogen, so I had to give it to him.â
â…â
âBut those are supposed to be sold in secret, so I went with him to Lennox Castle.â
â…â
âDo you remember the blonde woman who was with me that time?â
âYes. Vaguely.â
âShe said sheâs a mage. Something about healing and rechargingâI didnât really get itâbut apparently she helps with insomnia and trauma.â
The woman snorted.
Meyna couldnât respond.
Her thoughts tangled messily, impossible to sort out.
âWith all those rooms, he went straight to the bedroom, so Iâll admit I expected something. You know how women areâsee a pretty guy, and your body just reacts.â
â…Ha ha…â
âBut that bastardââ
She cursed just as boldly as Caliph himself.
âDidnât lay a single finger on this pretty body. Just took the drug, smoked it hard, and then guess what.â
â…â
âHe made me and that blonde woman play patty-cake.â
***
Meyna returned to Lennox Castle, helping Bavred prepare dinner.
Her hands were chopping onions, but her mind was elsewhere.
âHe burst through the door and demanded the strongest one we had. Said he wanted to sleep without nightmares.â
âShe said sheâs a mage. Helps with insomnia and trauma.â
âHe made me and that blonde woman play patty-cake.â
Strange, senseless stories sheâd just heard from that red-haired woman.
âAdvisor.â
âYes, Bavred?â
âWhat are you doing?â
âChopping onions.â
âYouâre not punishing them, are you?â
âWhat?â
When she looked down, the cutting board was piled high with what used to be onionsânow reduced to fine shreds.
They were about to turn into onion juice.
âHa ha. I just wanted to help with digestion, so I chopped them a little finer.â
âMaybe you should rest in the parlor.â
âYes, sir.â
***
Late that night, Caliph returned from the hunt.
He, Kurden, Adonis, and Meyna shared dinner together.
The atmosphere was no different from usual.
Kurden and Adonis still didnât know Meyna was resigning, and both she and Caliph behaved as though nothing had happened.
After tea, Kurden and Adonis returned to their rooms.
âThen Iâll get going now. Rest well, Sir Lennox.â
âWait.â
As Meyna rose calmly from her seat, Caliph stopped her.
âHow was it yesterday?â
The first meeting with the new Class-X holy knight she was supposed to serve.
While Meyna sat in that wretched meeting, Caliph had been inside the dungeon.
For two whole days of hunting, heâd thought of her endlessly.
âHe was quite impressive.â
Meynaâs answer was odd.
Too vagueâso vague it left too much room for the imagination.
âWhat kind of person?â
Caliph asked, and Meynaâs lips twitched.
Heâs a hidden prince and a Class-X holy knight, so I expected him to be skilled, but heâs also perfectly mannered. Iâm glad things ended between us, because now Iâll serve my new superior happily, and you can try living without me, you fool!
âI know the right answer, but I donât think I can say itâit doesnât suit me.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âActually, I havenât recruited the new holy knight yet.â
If Banze found out sheâd confessed the truth, heâd probably scold her for being a fool.
But Meyna decided to stick to her way.
She knew who she was.
A fool whose lies were always transparent.
Someone who couldnât bear to act dishonestlyârigid, stubborn, hopelessly upright.
So instead of mixing lies for revenge, she chose to speak the truth.
âBut Iâll try.â
â…â
âOnce I succeed in recruiting a holy knight, Iâll serve as his advisor. Iâll give it my all.â
She didnât mean to, but her words unsettled Caliph even more.
He pressed his lips together, unable to speak.
It felt as though a massive beast had seized his chest in its claws and was shaking him violently.
It hurt.
And it made him dizzy.
âI only spoke with him onceâjust for a momentâbut I could tell he was a good person.â
âA man?â
Caliph couldnât stop himself from asking something pathetic.
And he didnât even have the composure to pretend otherwise.
âYes. A man, but he looked almost like a woman.â
Meaningâhe was handsome.
âIf he werenât so tall, I mightâve mistaken him for one.â
Meaningâhe was handsome *and* tall.
âHe treated me so carefully that it almost made me nervous.â
Meaningâhe was handsome, tall, and kind.
âAre you going to keep going?â
âHuh?â
Meynaâs puzzled face carried no hint of teasing or provocation.
That only made it worse.
âSir Caliph.â
She spoke softly.
âAt first, I didnât really understand what Mr. Banze meant. Why he gave me two weeks. What he meant by âshake as much as you must.â Oh.â
â…â
âHe said itâs only natural that I canât end seven years all at once. So I should let myself be shaken by you as much as needed.â
As she recalled her teacherâs words, Meynaâs gaze drifted briefly into the air.
âI didnât understand it completely back then.â
â…â
âBut now I think I do.â
Her eyes returned to Caliphâs face.
âWhen I first told you we should stop, deep down I already knew I couldnât really do it.â
â…â
âBut now… somehow…â
She trailed off.
For Caliph, that silence felt like hell.
He could have grown old and died waiting for her next words.
âI think I can really end it now.â
To say something like that with such an innocent faceâ
She might be the cruelest person alive.
When she finished, Meyna stood up.
Lightly, as if she truly had nothing left to say.
âWhere are you going?â
Caliph asked the pointless question.
âTo Gillingham Square.â
âWhat? At this hour?â
âI have a drink appointment with Lady Beririch.â
âAre you crazy?â
âDo I look it?â
No.
She looked perfectly sane.
The one going crazy was him.
He was just doing his best to stay composed.
