Chapter 8
Cadin didnât deny it.
âIt would be an honor for a commoner.â
And it was true.
There were countless women who would kill to become his mistress.
But Eila wasnât one of them.
She met his gaze squarely.
âNo. I canât do that, Cadin.â
âWhat?â
A furrow formed between his brows.
He couldnât understand why she kept rejecting his generosity.
To dare refuse him, after losing everythingâ
Eila continued slowly, as if explaining to a child.
âYou know as well as I do that weâll have to annul our engagement sooner or later. And youâll soon become engaged to another woman.â
âGiven our familiesâ ties, itâs obvious who thatâll be.â
âThatâsââ
âRosia has already suffered enough because of me. I wonât hurt her further.â
Finally comprehending, Cadinâs mouth opened and closed like a fish.
She was breaking up with him for Rosiaâs sake.
âEven though she doesnât want to.â
His chest tightened strangely.
âBut Rosia isnât even your blood sister. Why botherââ
âNo. This is where we end. I know my place now.â
Eila shook her head with a sorrowful smile.
âIt pains me, but Iâm no longer someone who can stand by your side.â
âEilaââ
âIâll take my leave now. If I stay any longer, itâll only hurt more.â
Without hesitation, she turned her backâignoring every word he called after her.
âPerfect, isnât it?â
As she walked away, Eila mused.
Sheâd refused his offer without provoking his pride, giving him a noble excuse to save face.
Even if he chased after her, she could repeat the same reasoning.
âWell, the Late family will still be furious about being publicly dumped by a commoner. But thatâs a problem for future me.â
More importantlyâshe knew the agony of having words trapped in oneâs throat.
So she walked briskly, hoping to ruin his mood completely.
Eila didnât notice, but two people had witnessed the exchange from afar.
Rosia and Cedric, who had come to the academy for her transfer exams.
Cedin frowned, replaying Eilaâs expression.
Her darkened face as she left suggested an unpleasant conversation.
âDid that bastard already demand an annulment?â
He knew how much Eila adored her fiancĂŠ.
The thought of her heartbroken unsettled him.
âThis must be devastating for her.â
The Eila he knew was proudâa proper noble lady.
To be cast out overnight, abandoned by her fiancĂŠâhow could she bear it?
âNo wonder she panicked and asked for another paternity test.â
For the first time, he considered visiting her.
âThat prideful girl⌠making such a sad face.â
He seethed at Cadin, certain heâd said something cruel.
But thenâ
âBrother, what are you thinking about?â
Rosia blinked up at him with innocent eyes.
âNothing, Rosia.â
He couldnât let his new sister see him worrying over Eila.
Gritting his teeth, Cedric forced himself to look away.
After her declaration, Eila barricaded herself in her room.
Her bombshell would send both the Late and Blanche families into chaos.
A commoner daring to publicly reject a marquisâs heir was unprecedented.
âNo matter how politely I phrased it, a commoner initiating the breakup will wound their pride. Rosia, as his next fiancĂŠe, will be humiliated too.â
Imagining their dismay made her smirk.
âThe Blanche household must be in shambles by now.â
Callios wouldâve piled responsibilities onto Rosia to establish her positionâ
And Rosia, clueless, wouldâve bungled everything.
âNot my problem anymore.â
Eila resolved to cut all ties with House Blanche.
Instead, she focused on her next steps.
âFirst, I need to meet Felix.â
Though technically a âcommoner,â he was anything but.
In a world where secret heirs popped up like weeds, Felix would eventually be revealed as nobility.
âBut as a commoner, graduating and rising through the ranks would take too long.â
She planned to fast-track his statusâin exchange for his future aid.
Next, she examined her carefully packed herbs.
Though sheâd left everything from House Blanche behind, sheâd brought ingredients for temporary potions.
Her inability to use magic stemmed from Mana Insensitivityâa so-called âincurableâ condition.
âBut I know the cure.â
The perfect remedy required Felix to be recognized as the Azenta heir firstâ
But she could brew a stopgap version now.
As she sorted the herbs, her hands moved with practiced ease.
âThis makeshift potion will be weak and short-lived, butâŚâ
Soon, blue flames licked the cauldron, liquid bubbling like lava as steam curled upward.
Watching the magic unfold, Eila smiled.
âItâll be enough to convince Felix.â
She and the original Eila were the same person.
If the novelâs Eila could create this, so could she.
âNo room for error. Focus.â
Holding her breath, she poured every ounce of concentration into the brew.
Within days of Eilaâs departure, a letter arrived from House Late.
Jeratt massaged his templesâhis headaches had worsened lately.
âProbably because of that incident.â
The entire Blanche household was on edge after Eilaâs public rejection of Cadin.
A commoner humiliating a marquisâs son was unthinkable.
Dreading the letterâs contents, Jeratt sought Callios.
âA message from House Late.â
The Duke looked up from his documents, displeased.
âAbout that fiasco, I assume?â
Jeratt could only shrug.
