In the Shadow of the Ceremony

The grand hall shimmered with gold and laughter, filled with the music and chatter of the nobility.
It was the annual aristocratic ceremonyâa glittering event of prestige.
And there I was, walking in beside Professor Saphir.
âRelax, my lady⥠Youâre all stiff with tension again.â
âQâquiet! Th-this is an official occasion!â
My heart wouldnât calm down.
This time, I wasnât in my usual boyish attire.
Wearing a dress and walking beside the professor as his fiancée felt⊠unbearably awkward.
â
Amidst the crowd, a voice suddenly called out.
âWell, well. Isnât that you, Saphir?â
When I turned, I saw a tall figure standing there.
Their long blond hair was elegantly tied up, their features strikingly beautifulâ
but the voice carried a slightly low tone, giving off a mysterious, androgynous air.
âMy my⥠Itâs been ages, Lionel.â
The professorâs eyes softened as he smiled, clearly pleased to see them.
Lionel?
âŠWho on earth is that?
â
The two began chatting effortlessly.
âYou havenât changed a bit. Still wearing that smile that makes people lose their composure.â
âOh, and youâstill as charming as everâĄâ
They laughed together, the kind of warm laughter that hinted at a long, shared history.
Something pricked sharply inside my chest.
It was as if I wasnât even there.
âEven though I was supposed to be his fiancĂ©e.
âSaphir, you used to flirt with me quite a lot, didnât you?â
âMy⥠Did I really? I canât seem to recall~â
He brushed it off so easily, so playfully.
But before I knew it, my foot stomped against the marble floor.
â…! Professor, shouldnât we be moving along already!â
My own voice came out sharper than I intended.
â
Lionel looked at me, clearly amused, lips curling into a faint smile.
âHow adorable. So youâre the fiancĂ©e now?â
âTh-thatâs right! So what if I am!â
I stepped forward and said it loud enough for everyone to hear.
At that, the professor looked at me, eyes narrowing slightlyâ
with a hint of amusement⊠and something softer beneath it.
âFufu⥠Yes, thatâs right. Iâm with this precious young lady now.â
Lionel shrugged lightly and lifted their glass.
âThen I wish you both happiness.â
And with that, they disappeared into the crowd.
â
On the way home from the ceremony,
I couldnât stop pouting.
âDonât glare like that, dear. Youâll get wrinklesâĄâ
âWhaâ! I-I am not glaring!â
The words tangled in my throat.
I didnât even know why I felt so irritated.
But one thing had become painfully clearâ
I didnât know anything about Professor Saphirâs past.
No, not just the past.
I didnât really know him at all.
There was still so much I didnât understand about him.
And that ignoranceâ
that gap between usâ
was something I simply couldnât stand.
