The students gathered in the academyâs training grounds.
Today was the annual tradition â the Magical Mock Battle.
â This year, teachers will also be joining the team battles,â
announced the instructor in charge.
The arena instantly erupted in chatter.
And thenâ
âPairs will be decided by lottery!â
When I looked at the name written on the card I drew, I froze in despair.
â…Professor Saphir.â
âMy my⥠Isnât this fateâs red string tying us together?â
âItâs NOT!!â
Of all people â why him!?
I wanted to cry out to the heavens.
At the signal, the mock battle began.
Our opponents were two upperclassmen â skilled, confident, and merciless with both weapons and magic.
âProfessor, from the rightâ!â
âI know, darling⥠Leave it to me.â
A dazzling magic circle flared open, and flaming arrows rained down.
…Way too flashy!
The teachers were supposed to have restrictions as a handicap â so what on earth was he thinking?
The enemies dodged the flames and charged straight at me instead.
âHey, theyâre coming this way now!â
âOh my⥠But youâll be fine, wonât you?â
Apparently, this was the price of being paired with him.
The opponents naturally targeted the student, and the professor seemed to encourage that.
Other students got partners who shouted things like,
âIâll cover you!â
âbut in my case, he was clearly enjoying himself.
I was getting furious.
But this wasnât the time to be angry.
âKhâ haaah!â
I reinforced my body with mana and swung my sword with all my might, barely deflecting the incoming attack.
Sweat stung my eyes.
The professor was just playing aroundâ
At this rate, there was no way we could winâ
âMy lady.â
A calm voice came from behind me.
âLetâs synchronize for the next move. Combine your strike with my spell.â
When I turned, his eyes were sharp and serious.
Not the teasing smile he always wore.
â…Got it.â
I drew in a deep breath.
The next instant, the professor unleashed a massive spear of ice.
As the enemy desperately tried to block itâ
âHaaaah!â
I poured all my mana into my blade and struck with everything I had.
With a thunderous crash, the opponents were slammed into the ground.
The refereeâs voice rang out:
âWinners â Saphir Rogiere andââ
After a brief pause, my name was called.
Cheers erupted around us.
I rested my hands on my knees, gasping for breath.
âHaa… haa…â
âSplendid workâĄâ
The professor smiled beside me.
That same frivolous grin â but this time, there was a hint of pride behind it.
â…Donât think Iâm thanking you for this.â
âMy⥠Then shall we pair up again next time?â
âAbsolutely not!!â
Even as I said that, deep inside my chestâ
I couldnât help but think, it wasnât all that bad.
But that was a secret only I would ever know.
