~Chapter 83~
âW-Whatâs wrong with her?â
Terrified, I stumbled backward. Amy stood there pale and stunned, but then suddenly walked toward me with a determined look.
âYou know something about this situation, donât you?â
âI-I donât know exactly.â
âLiar.â
Amy was already standing right in front of me.
âWhere are you going right now?â
She looked just like she did at the auction house. I gulped nervously. Wasnât she mistakingc me for Ricardo?
âCan I follow you? Donât say no.â
âArenât you supposed to be looking for the princess…?â
âI-I never said Iâd stay with her the whole time! I just meant Iâd go with her until I found her.â
With that, she naturally moved beside me.
She wasnât exactly someone I wanted as a companion, but I couldnât find a good reason to say no.
âFine. Do whatever you want.â
âYou wonât regret it! Iâm the princessâs favorite maid, you know!â
Amy started rambling about herself. I half-listened while walking, following the arrow.
âThey said this was a guide. And it really is guiding me.â
I found Arkanâs one useful trait.
âOh, that personâŚ!â
After a while, we reached a place that looked like our destination.
[If you had left earlier, you wouldâve had more time with the person you were looking for. What a shame.]
Whatâs the point of saying that now?
âThatâs Ailins, right?â
Amy asked, and I quietly nodded.
Ailins was locked inside a prisoner transport cart, looking like a criminal. Around her stood stern knights holding sharp spears, watching the area carefully.
At least⌠it seemed like they were having a meal?
â…!â
Just then, one of the knights glanced aroundâand suddenly turned his head toward us. I quickly pulled Amy down, making her sit.
She fell on her butt and gave me a resentful glare. I held a finger to my lips to signal for silence, and Amy widened her eyes and nodded.
âGood job.â
â…!â
I watched Ailins through the bushes. She looked older than when I saw her in Dremokan as a child, but still young.
About the same age as me.
That fact made me feel a little sad.
Amy fidgeted with her fingers before hesitantly whispering.
âShe looks really pitiful⌠should we help her?â
She was already getting emotionally involved.
âSheâs here because she chose to be.â
âM-Maybe the situation forced her to! How could she endure it when everyone treats her like that?â
Amy continued, sounding uncertain.
âSh-She seems as amazing as your grandfatherâŚâ
I listened quietly, then spoke up.
âAlright, then.â
â…You will?â
âWhy are you so surprised? Youâre the one who suggested it.â
âI thought youâd ignore me for sure.â
What kind of person does she think I am?
Meanwhile, the knights around Ailins started settling down.
âThings are quiet. I thought everyone would be freaking out about the demon.â
âMost of the people in the city died. Theyâre probably in shock.â
âSigh, I hope no one was hurt too badly. Honestly, all this bloodshed wasnât even necessary…â
âShhh, watch your mouth!â
I listened to their pointless conversation and slowly approached the cart Ailins was in. She was staring blankly at the sky, deep in thought.
âWhat I said isnât wrong, is it? The demon didnât even hurt us.â
âHey! Watch it! You donât want to get into trouble.â
The knights didnât seem very alert, which likely meant she had already surrendered to the emperor and given up her name.
I stood right in front of her. Finally noticing me, Ailins looked at me suspiciously.
â…â
There were many differences between the original story I knew and this twisted reality, but the biggest one was Ailins.
I had to know why she gave in to the emperor.
âThey said human will can change fate.â
âIf you have power, why did you give up your name?â
Ailins frowned.
Was that too blunt?
I was about to rephrase when she quietly answered with her dry lips.
â…Because that was the right thing to do.â
Even after hearing her answer, I didnât quite understand.
âYouâre not a demon.â
âJust losing a name ends it all.â
I wanted to say it doesnât end there, but I held back.
âThen what about you?â
âIâŚâ
Ailins clenched her fists. But soon, she looked straight at me.
âYouâre telling me to betray the empire?â
Ah⌠now I get it.
Ailinsâs will.
âIâm saying donât abandon yourself. If the empire canât survive without you, it wouldnât have made it this far anyway.â
âY-Yeah! We can go on without you…â
Amy suddenly cut in. But her voice was loudâand the nearby knights all stood up angrily.
âWhoâs there?!â
âHic!â
Amy quickly hid behind me. The knights came closer, tightening their grip on their spears.
I quickly changed my expression and spoke calmly.
âSheâs my sick sister. She got excited seeing the demon for the first time.â
I grabbed Amyâs arm, and she shouted dramatically.
âI saw it in a storybook! A story about demons and angels!â
The knights looked at each other, unsure.
Taking the chance, I pulled out some bread I got earlier from Charles and handed it over.
âThank you for your hard work. Itâs not much, but please take this.â
âThis is mine! Iâm going to feed the demon!â
She didnât have to act this hard…
I pushed Amy away from the bread. One of the knights scratched his head.
âAhem⌠Youâre clearly struggling with your sister. Weâre fine.â
Meanwhile, a knight checking Ailinthâs cart signaled with an âXâ to show there was no issue.
âItâs dangerous. Get out of here. Weâll let it slide just this once!â
âThank you!â
As we left, Ailins looked at us and said bitterly,
âWhat if I follow your advice and it all falls apart? Just to save myselfâŚâ
âThen you live with it.â
â…!â
âBesides, youâre not the kind of person whoâd run away just to save yourself.â
I couldnât even imagine what kind of time she had endured alone, to go from this girl to someone driven only by revenge.
âHey! Why are you still here? Get going!â
âUgh, Amy, come on!â
I joked and pulled Amyâs hand, walking away.
Once we were out of sight, I let her go. She glared at me with a pout.
âY-You did great.â
âForget it! I cleaned up my own mess, so I donât need your compliments!â
Then why are you mad…?
âOkay, thank you. If it werenât for you, we wouldâve been caught.â
âJust saying it doesnât count!â
Then what do you want from me?!
âThen keep calling me your sister.â
â…Did you actually enjoy playing the âdumb little sisterâ?â
âAre you crazy?!â
Amy was horrified. I hesitated, then cautiously spoke.
âHey, if this is about Ricardo, Iâm not involved with himâŚâ
Amy started to reply, but instead clenched her teeth and punched her own chest.
âSis!â
Thatâs when Pennyâs voice rang out.
As I turned, the day suddenly shifted into night. The world changed rapidly around us.
â…!â
[Time is passing! I warned you this would happen!]
I felt dizzy, like I was going to be sick, and quickly closed my eyes.
âSis, are you okay?â
Penny held me up.
The child I brought along was also there. Unlike Amy and the child, who were both scared, Penny chatted away without fear.
âI found a man wearing the same clothes and mask as you! He said heâs on our side!â
…Ricardo?
âHe also said he knows how to return to the real world. All we have to do is watch these memories and not interfere!â
Penny took my hand and pulled.
âLetâs go! If I donât get back to Uncle soon, Iâll be in big trouble!â
âWait⌠That man, he sent you back alone?â
âYeah!â
Thatâs not Ricardo.
The Ricardo I knew would never send a child away unprotected.
If it were really him, he wouldâve reunited with the Penny I know.
âAnd yet he said heâs on our sideâŚâ
These memories were affecting the real Ailins too.
If he knows that, it means he doesnât plan to stop Ailins from taking revenge.
And the one who benefits the most if she attacks Carpea isâŚ
âOnly the Kingdom of Orphen.â
As my thoughts spiraled out of control, Amy leaned in and whispered.
âThat kidâs suspicious.â
âSis, who is this woman?â
Penny pulled me to her side, and Amy grabbed my other arm, unwilling to lose.
A spoiled kid bought off with money, and a lady who joined me over some guy.
âWhat a weird combo…â

oh no, amy, you growing on me.
Me too đ
