~Chapter 69~Â
Finally, Ricardo went quiet.
But his eyes were still trembling, like he was scared of something.
When the cold herbs touched his skin, he flinched.
âSee? That hurts, doesnât it?â
âThatâs not pain, itâs justââ
âAlright, then letâs say itâs ticklish.â
Ricardo opened his mouth like he wanted to protest, but he closed it again.
These scarsâŚ
I tried to ignore them, but I couldnât help looking.
They werenât from the battle.
Even someone like me, who didnât know much about combat, could see that.
These werenât injuries from enemies trying to kill him.
No, these looked like whip marks.
They were cruel.
They werenât meant to kill, just to make him suffer.
And they werenât few.
There were so many scars that I couldnât even count them.
Who couldâve done this to him?
There shouldnât be anyone bold enough to lay a hand on the heir of House Hessen.
Not unless they had no sense of fear.
ââŚThatâs enough,â he said, cutting into my thoughts.
I looked at him as he reached for his shirt and said casually,
âWhat are you doing? You need to let the medicine soak in first.â
He looked at me like he didnât know what to say.
I sighed and sat down beside him.
âThe rainâs calmed down a lot. I think we can head back tomorrow.â
ââŚThatâs good to hear.â
âYou said you had things to do in Orphen, right? Is your schedule okay?â
When I spoke quietly, Ricardoâs gaze drifted up to my face.
I tilted my head at him, confused, and he quickly looked away, startled.
âY-Yes, itâs fine. I just needed to check something about the SirenâŚâ
âAh, I see.â
So we didnât have to rush out at dawn.
Since he was still hurt, we could take it slow and head back at a relaxed pace.
âŚOr should we hurry and find a doctor first?
While I debated with myself, Ricardo spoke gently.
âThe roads will be slippery. We should take our time going down.â
âDo you think so?â
He nodded.
As I stared blankly into the fire, drowsiness started to creep in again.
I rubbed my eyes, trying to stay awake.
Ricardo noticed and said softly,
 âGo ahead and sleep.â
âNo, I should stay awake.â
âBecause of the fire?â
âThat, andâŚâ
I glanced at the cave entrance.
âJust in case. I have to keep watch over you.â
After all, someone had tried to shoot Ricardo during the day.
There was no guarantee they wouldnât come back.
Ricardoâs eyes widened. But thenâhe laughed.
Yeah, I knew it sounded ridiculous, even as I said it.
Still, did he have to laugh?
âStop laughing and just sleep.â
âHow could I sleep now?â
He chuckled again.
I shook my head, trying to stay awake.
I canât believe I almost fell asleep while watching a sick patientâŚ
Ricardoâs soft laughter continued.
ââŚDo you remember the doll you left for me in Dians?â
His voice was low, like it took effort to speak.
âIt looked like you.â
âIf you mean the cactus, I already told you. It was prickly like me.â
âNo, not that one.â
Ah. That magic doll I bought with Rayla.
Didnât it change to resemble the person who bought it?
I blinked in surprise. Ricardo gently pulled my head to rest on his shoulder.
âDid it turn out ugly?â I asked.
Ricardo hesitated.
ââŚJudging by that silence, it must look terrible.â
âI⌠I wouldnât know,â he muttered.
Couldnât he even lie a little?
I sighed quietly.
Then he spoke again, like heâd finally worked up the courage.
ââŚMaybe you could see for yourself. One day.â
ââŚâ
âI donât really have a good eye for appearances.â
So thatâs what he had been trying to say all along.
I nodded slightly, rubbing my eyes.
âRemember when you asked if you were my misfortune?â
Ricardo froze completely.
If I didnât say it now, I knew I never would.
âI wasnât unhappy. Even in Deance, I had a good time.â
ââŚ.â
âIâm sorry I didnât answer sooner.â
I wanted to hear his response.
But there was only the sound of the fire echoing through the cave.
I waited.
And waited.
But sleep eventually won.
***
Birds chirped near my ear.
The sunlight was unusually bright and sharp.
âGahâŚ!â
I woke up startled, panic rising in my chest.
âYouâre awake?â Ricardoâs voice came gently.
I tried to stay calm as I asked,
 âDid I⌠Did I fall asleep?â
âYes. You slept very well.â
Oh no. Oh no! What was I thinking?!
I actually sleptâwith a patient next to me!
âWhat about you?â I asked quickly.
Did he get worse while I was out?
Ricardo only laughed lightly, rubbing his shoulder.
âI slept fine.â
âAnd your fever? It didnât come back at night?â
To reassure me, he took my hand and placed it on his forehead.
âNow youâre convinced?â
Strangely, his fever had gone down completely.
His skin felt just like normal.
âThankfully, the rain stopped,â he said.
Sure enough, sunlight poured into the cave entrance.
As I stepped toward it, Ricardo gently grabbed my hand.
Confused, I turned to himâand he slid a ring onto my finger.
My long pink hair suddenly shortened, and the reflection of brown strands flickered into view.
âAh. Thanks.â
Ricardo didnât answer.
Instead, he brushed the messy strands of my hair with his hand.
Outside, the air was bright and crisp.
Last nightâs storm had swept everything clean.
âAnnâŚ!â
Just then, a familiar, distressed voice called out.
Simon, holding a half-broken umbrella, looked like heâd been crying.
âPlease donât tell me you got washed away in the rain!â
âSimon!â
I shouted his name.
The moment he saw me, his face went paleâlike heâd seen a ghost.
âAnn?!â
ââŚWhereâs one of your glasses lenses?â
âIs that really what youâre worried about right now?!â
âI thought Iâd gotten nobles killed! Iâve been panicking all night!â
Tears streamed down Simonâs cheeksâand then came the hiccups.
ââŚWait. Did I just say ânoblesâ out loud?â
Ricardo gave a slow nod.
Simonâs face turned ghostly white.
âItâs fine,â I said calmly. âActually, Iâm impressed it took you this long to slip up.â
Honestly, Iâm more surprised you kept calling me Ann that whole time.
***
âOh, you made it back right on time!â Lily greeted us cheerfully.
She waved at Ricardo behind us.
âI hope our Ann didnât cause too much trouble. Did everything go according to schedule?â
Ricardo glanced at me.
Why are you looking at me like that?!
I did well, didnât I?
I shot him a lookâand he chuckled softly.
âShe definitely lacks the talent of a magician.â
âOh dear. I shouldâve trained her better.â
âAlright, time to go!â I quickly pushed Lily toward the ship.
She rolled her eyes but headed inside.
Ricardo leaned closer to my ear and whispered,
âYou said youâd come check on me.â
âHuh?â
But by then, he had already returned to his proper duke-like demeanor.
He gave me a small nod of farewell.
âSeriouslyâŚâ
I let out a sigh and a dry laugh.
Just then, Simon tapped my arm.
âAnn, take this.â
He handed me a small framed picture.
It looked like a burst of flamesâor maybe some kind of wild beast with flaring claws.
âWhat is this?â
âIt was in Mr. Atkinsâs cave.â
Simon scratched his cheek, embarrassed.
âTake it as a souvenir from Orphen.â
âBut if it belonged to Atkins, isnât it important?â
âItâs fine. Iâve looked at it long enough.â
ââŚAre you giving me trash?â
Simon frantically shook his head.
âN-No! I mean, thanks to you, I got to see my family again. And I was glad to meet someone who actually knew about Mr. AtkinsâŚâ
He trailed off, fidgeting.
What a weird way to say thank you.
Well, thatâs so like Simon.
ââŚCan I come visit sometimes?â
âSure, if Iâm free.â
A bright smile returned to his face.
But stillâŚ
What happened to Peril?

Ngl the arrow part was random. If someone shot it because of outsiders, why didnât they come to check? And didnât Simon take away everyone saying they werenât there, so why shoot an arrow there?
The author probably wanted to use it as a way to make Bianca see his scars
they really brushed off about the arrow. just to move the plot. talk about bad arrow. oh well but i still eat the plot tho because that little talk they have in cave is heartwarming. finally, a little, they can honest with each other
*talk about bad writing
