~Chapter 122~
Even though it was dark, there was no doubtāthe person approaching us was Idette.
āā¦She really came.ā
Penny whispered quietly, while Idette pushed open the iron bars.
Creaaak.
The sound of metal scraping against the floor echoed as she gestured for us to follow.
āIāll show you the way out.ā
For a moment, Penny and I exchanged glances. Then I silently stood and followed her.
Outside, everyone was busy searching for the missing Idette.
āWait.ā
At a distant noise of footsteps, Idette stiffened instantly. Under the flickering torchlight, her tense face was clear.
Only after the sound faded into the distance did she finally let out the breath she had been holding.
āThank you for saving us.ā
At my words, Idette nodded slowly, then froze.
āN-no⦠itās nothing.ā
She seemed unable to meet my eyes, guilt weighing down her gazeāespecially whenever she glanced at Penny.
āAre you heading to the capital?ā I asked carefully, trying to read her intentions.
āNo, but⦠Iāll make sure you both escape Tyrannian safely. You donāt have to worry.ā
āYou seem like someone from the capital. Why not just come with us?ā
āIām sorry.ā
Her refusal was instant, without hesitation.
I stared at her silently. Then, as if trying to explain herself, she added,
āI have someone I need to meet.ā
Of course. She was planning to speak with Erkessian.
Not unexpected, though it wasnāt what I wanted to hear.
āAt the Lantern Festival?ā
āā¦Yes.ā
āPeople are hunting you everywhere. Is that meeting really worth the risk?ā
Idette stayed silent.
āDoes this person even know youāre in danger right now?ā
She still couldnāt answer. And into that silence, Penny spoke bluntly,
āIf they planned to meet at the Lantern Festival, then of course they know. Which means they probably already ran away by now.ā
āHeās not that irresponsible! He promised heād save me!ā Idetteās voice trembled, her eyes wavering even as she defended him.
āI donāt understand.ā I tilted my head.
āYou ran away. We got caught instead. Was I wrong to think thatās how it happened?ā
Idetteās expression turned flustered, her eyes darting nervously.
āIf you trusted heād save you, then why run at all?ā
āI-it wasnāt running away. Iām just heading to our meeting place.ā
āOh really? Where is that, then?ā
At my question, she only clenched her fists, refusing to answer.
So, she was just planning to meet Erkessian blindly.
āYou could meet somewhere else. Why insist on the Lantern Festival?ā
I stepped closer, and Idette stepped back.
āAre you sure this person can be trusted?ā
For a moment, her steps faltered. But then she shook her head hard, unwilling to admit her doubt.
āYou donāt understand. Heās my lover!ā
āā¦ā
āI know him better than anyone. He would never hurt me.ā
Her voice sounded like she was reminding herself, as if she had to believe it.
āHe promised never to betray me. Thatās why I have to believe in him.ā
Penny smacked her forehead with a loud thunk.
āI just sound confused, but he really is a good person. The most reliable person Iāve ever met!ā
āIf he were really that good, you wouldnāt have needed to defend him.ā
āā¦.ā
āYou wouldnāt even feel the need.ā
Idetteās lips quivered before she tried to argue back.
āThere was just a misunderstanding. If I see him and ask directly, I can find out the truth. It wonāt be too late thenāā
āWake up, Idette.ā
āā¦!ā
āBy then itāll already be too late.ā
I dragged a tired hand across my face.
āFine. Letās say he really is good. Then in this situation, he would put your safety above anything else.ā
Beside me, Penny nodded furiously.
āSo why risk everything to clear a misunderstanding right now?ā
āEven a child can see itās wrong.ā
I tilted my head toward Penny, who agreed. Idette frowned.
āHe said heād⦠save meā¦ā
āThink logically. Whatās wrong with escaping on your own?ā
Did I really have to spell this out for her?
āIf heās the kind of man who canāt accept that, then heās not your lover.ā
If even that didnāt convince her, then there was only one choice leftāIād have to knock her unconscious and drag her away.
I was just about to move when she suddenly spoke.
āLady Bianca.ā
āā¦Yes?ā
I answered without thinkingāthen froze.
Wait. How did she know my name?
I touched my cheek nervously. Idette blinked in shock, then stammered,
āS-sorry. I must have mistaken you for someone else.ā
Her face crumpled as she clutched my hand.
āI know Iām foolish. But I want to believe in him one last time.ā
āIdette.ā
Then a voice came from behindāfamiliar and gentle.
āIāve been looking everywhere for you. Youāre not hurt, are you?ā
Even to me, a stranger, it sounded like a loverās voice.
I couldnāt see Erkessianās expression from where I stood, but from Idetteās reaction, he was perfectly imitating the man she wanted him to be.
āCome with me. I promised to make you the most noble woman in the Empire, didnāt I? Lord Richard wishes for it as well.ā
His footsteps drew closer.
āWith your strength alone, youāll never escape here.ā
At those words, Idetteās hand slackened in mine.
āYou know, as always, only I can save you.ā
ā¦Unbelievable!
As though bewitched, Idette took a step toward him. My teeth clenched hard.
āFine. If you want to hear his explanation, do it.ā
āSis!ā Penny cried out.
āBut only if you survive first.ā
I tightened my grip on Idetteās hand.
āIf you come with me, you can always return later and hear the truth. But if you stay now, youāll never get the chance.ā
āā¦!ā
āYou asked me once to go with you to see Lord Richard, didnāt you? You werenāt joking then, were you?ā
Her face was unreadable. I couldnāt tell what she was thinking, but I pressed on.
āThatās what both you and Lord Richard wanted.ā
Idette stammered,
āI⦠I have a future I want. For that, I have no choice.ā
I glanced at Penny. She caught on quickly and gave a small nod.
āHis Highness has always been kind to someone like me, so lacking in everythingā¦ā
Idette closed her eyes. A faint light glowed at her fingertips. Penny instinctively stepped back, alarmed.
āā¦Thatās why I believe heāll forgive me again this time.ā
But the light hardened into a sharp magic circleānot between us, but forming a perfect barrier between Erkessian and Idette.
