Chapter 18
Breaking Her Leg
Second Madam was furious beyond belief and stormed out with her people.
Sure enough, she saw Fu Zhao Ning striding into her courtyard. Xiao Tao followed beside her, and both mistress and servant were carrying weapons in their hands.
Behind them stood a young man dressed in refined clothing.
The curse that had almost burst from Second Madamâs mouth was swallowed back down the moment she saw Qing Yi.
In front of outsiders, she always maintained the image of a kind and loving elder, and she could not lose the dignity of the Second Madam of the Fu family.
Still, why was there an unrelated man inside the Fu residence so late at night?
Fortunately, Qing Yi did not follow them into the courtyard and stopped outside instead.
After all, it was inappropriate for a man to enter the womenâs quarters at night.
The moment Fu Mingzhu saw Fu Zhao Ning in her wedding dress, jealousy filled her eyes.
This wedding dress was clearly not the one Fu Zhao Ning had worn earlier when she was supposed to marry into the Xiao Wangfu.
This one was far more luxurious and noble. The gold-thread embroidery was exquisite and beautiful, nothing like the plain and shabby one from before.
âZhao Ning, I heard you abandoned Xiao Shizi and turned around to throw yourself into the arms of an old Wangye,â Fu Mingzhu said. Her attention was completely on Fu Zhao Ning, and she had not yet noticed Qing Yi.
âOld… Wangye?â
Fu Zhao Ning repeated the title, remembering Jun Wangâs peerlessly handsome face.
He looked only a little over twenty. That hardly counted as old, did it?
Because Fu Mingzhu had spoken loudly, Qing Yi heard it clearly from outside the courtyard gate, and he was stunned.
Their master was already considered old at this age?
âSecond Madam, I came here to demand someone back.â
Fu Zhao Ning ignored Fu Mingzhu and stared directly at Second Madam.
âZhao Ning, you just married into a Wangfu today, and now you donât even acknowledge your elders anymore? You wonât even call me Great Aunt?â Second Madam frowned.
âCut the nonsense. I donât have the patience to waste words with you. Where did you sell Zhong Shen? And where is Huzi locked up?â
âGreat Aunt doesnât know what youâre talking about. Besides, youâre already a married woman now. A married daughter is like water poured out. So stop interfering in the Fu familyâs affairs. If you really care, then just look after your grandfather. Thereâs no need to make such a fuss over a couple of lowly servants.â
Second Madam covered her mouth and laughed.
Seeing Fu Zhao Ning anxious made her feel delighted inside.
Fu Zhao Ning was already married off. Sooner or later, the Fu residence would completely fall into her hands. What was wrong with her handling a couple of servants?
âXiao Tao, where is Huzi locked up?â Fu Zhao Ning directly asked Xiao Tao.
âIn the woodshed over there.â Xiao Tao had secretly checked before and knew where they had locked Huzi up. She immediately pointed in the direction.
It was near the small kitchen beside Second Madamâs courtyard.
âLetâs go.â
Fu Zhao Ning decided to bring Huzi out first.
Seeing her lead Xiao Tao toward that direction, Second Madam panicked and immediately ordered her maids and old women, no longer caring about Qing Yi.
âStop her! Are you all dead or what?â
The maids and old women immediately rushed toward Fu Zhao Ning.
They had done this many times over the years. Whenever they stopped Fu Zhao Ning, they would also secretly pinch her, twist her, kick her, and scratch at her with their nails in the chaos.
Every servant around Second Madam had long become vicious and cruel like their mistress.
As memories of all these past incidents surfaced from Miss Fuâs memories, anger surged inside Fu Zhao Ning. She swung the broom fiercely at them.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
She swung the broom so quickly that afterimages appeared.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The broom struck the wicked servants mercilessly, beating them until they screamed miserably.
âOw!â
âAh! It hurts!â
âMy face!â
Fu Zhao Ning wielded the broom with the momentum of a broadsword, beating them until they cried for their parents. At the same time, she kicked one of the old women hard.
With a thud, the old woman fell to the ground, tripping several others. They all collapsed together into a pile like a heap of flesh.
Carrying a fierce gust of wind, Fu Zhao Ning rushed to the woodshed door, which had been barred shut with a wooden pole. She yanked the pole away and kicked the door open.
Bang!
A thick smell of blood drifted out from the dark woodshed.
The moment Fu Zhao Ning smelled it, her expression changed.
âQing Yi!â
Qing Yi had been stunned watching her fight so fiercely. Hearing her call, he snapped back to his senses and hurried over.
Fu Zhao Ning grabbed the lantern hanging outside and shone it inside.
A person lay curled up in the corner of the woodshed, dressed in old blue cloth clothes. Both pant legs were soaked in blood, and several places on the clothes were torn open. He lay there motionless, as if he had already stopped breathing.
âMiss, itâs Brother Huzi!â
The moment Xiao Tao saw him like this, tears streamed down her face again.
Had they beaten Brother Huzi to death?
Fu Zhao Ning quickly walked over and pressed her fingers against Huziâs neck. Relief flooded her heart.
âHeâs still alive. Qing Yi, please carry him back to our courtyard.â
âYes.â
Qing Yi did not say anything more. He immediately bent down, lifted Huzi onto his back, and quickly walked out.
Huziâs legs were covered in blood, yet Qing Yi showed no disgust. Instead, he sighed inwardly. The legs were obviously broken. Even if this young man survived, he would probably be crippled for life.
It really seemed that Miss Fu had an extremely difficult life. The burden she carried was far too heavy.
âStop right there! Youâre not allowed to leave!â Second Madam ordered people to block Qing Yi. âWho exactly are you? What right do you have to interfere in our Fu familyâs matters? Following Zhao Ning around so late at nightâcould it be that you have some improper relationship with her?â
