Chapter 3
He Would Not Even Close His Eyes in Death
With a loud boom, Xiao Yan Jing felt his blood boil and rush straight to his head.
“Fu! Zhao! Ning!”
He gritted his teeth and forced her name out one word at a time.
How dare she?
How dare she humiliate him like this?
The people around them were stunned.
Then, as they looked between the two of them, many subconsciously nodded.
They actually felt that Miss Fu was right.
Xiao Yan Jing glared at her viciously.
“Fu Zhao Ning, don’t regret this!
I want to see exactly how you crawl back home in disgrace!
And don’t forget your grandfather. He’s only holding onto his last breath, isn’t he?
Do you believe that the moment you return home and he learns that your engagement is broken and you can never marry, he will die on the spot?”
Flames burned in Fu Zhao Ning’s eyes.
This trash of a man was still threatening her at a time like this.
But she also knew he was right.
Old Master Fu could not handle even the slightest shock in his current condition.
Seeing her remain silent, Xiao Yan Jing sneered.
“And every insult you gave me today, I will remember clearly.
Don’t even dream of finding another husband.”
He wanted to see who would dare marry Fu Zhao Ning.
Hearing this, Li Zhi Yao immediately nodded and added cruelly,
“That’s right! Isn’t Old Master Fu always worrying about you?
When you stay unmarried forever, he won’t even be able to close his eyes in death!”
Smack!
Fu Zhao Ning raised her hand and slapped Li Zhi Yao hard across the face.
How dare she curse her grandfather?
“AHH!”
Li Zhi Yao screamed.
Her face instantly swelled red.
Just as she was about to charge at Fu Zhao Ning, a cold, powerful young man’s voice spread through the street with inner force, drowning out all the noise.
“Prince Jun returns to the capital. Clear the way.”
The entire street froze.
Then someone suddenly came back to their senses.
“Prince Jun!”
“Prince Jun has returned to the capital!”
“Heavens! Has Prince Jun recovered? Can he finally leave Youqing Peak?”
Prince Jun?
Fu Zhao Ning searched through the original owner’s memories but found nothing.
It seemed the former Fu Zhao Ning knew almost nothing about him.
But when she looked at Xiao Yan Jing, she noticed his expression suddenly change.
Then the same cold voice rang out again.
“Those who block the road—die.”
The words were merciless.
The entire crowd shuddered.
At once, people scrambled to move aside and fell to their knees one after another.
In the middle of the kneeling crowd, only Fu Zhao Ning, Xiao Yan Jing, and Li Zhi Yao remained standing.
They stood out sharply.
And only then did Fu Zhao Ning see the carriage slowly approaching.
It was completely black.
The carriage body was carved with eagles and twisting branches.
At each corner was a carved beast.
The deep purple curtain embroidered with gold did not move at all, hiding everything inside.
Three powerful black horses pulled it forward.
Their glossy coats gleamed under the light.
In front rode a handsome young guard with a stern expression and a long sword at his waist.
Clearly, he had been the one speaking.
Behind the carriage rode twelve more guards, all dressed identically and carrying swords.
The entire procession—men, horses, carriage—radiated cold authority.
The lead guard’s eyes swept toward them.
Li Zhi Yao was about to speak when Xiao Yan Jing suddenly yanked her down to kneel.
Fu Zhao Ning was surprised.
This Prince Jun clearly held far greater status than Xiao Yan Jing.
Which meant—
Xiao Yan Jing could not threaten him.
A thought flashed through her mind.
She quickly bent down and nudged the kneeling matchmaker.
“Is Prince Jun married?”
The matchmaker trembled in fear.
“Oh heavens, Miss Fu, kneel quickly!
How could Prince Jun be married? Of course he is not!”
As she spoke, she tugged anxiously at Fu Zhao Ning’s skirt.
Just then—
Cough. Cough. Cough.
Low coughing came from inside the carriage.
Fu Zhao Ning’s hearing was sharp.
She caught it clearly.
She also noticed the handsome guard’s expression change slightly as he turned toward the carriage.
Her eyes lit up.
Without hesitation, she strode into the middle of the road and blocked the carriage.
The guard’s hand instantly gripped his sword.
“Move aside!”
Instead of retreating, Fu Zhao Ning stepped closer and lowered her voice.
“I can relieve his cough.”
The guard had already begun drawing his sword, so she spoke quickly.
Xiao Yan Jing stared at her in disbelief.
Had this woman gone mad?
They had just said anyone who blocked the road would die, yet she was throwing herself forward.
Had the broken engagement driven her insane?
Cough cough cough cough…
As if heaven itself was helping her, another fit of suppressed coughing came from inside the carriage.
The guard’s hand paused.
Fu Zhao Ning immediately added,
“Did the patient fall into water before?”
The guard’s expression changed.
“Who are you?”
“I’m from the Fu family of East City District.
My name is Fu Zhao Ning.”
The Fu family?
Listening to the coughing from inside, the guard gritted his teeth.
“Then get on the carriage—”
Before he could finish, Fu Zhao Ning suddenly raised her voice and spoke clearly enough for everyone to hear.
Her next words shocked the entire street.
“Prince Jun, do you need a Princess Consort?”
“A Princess Consort who will never cause you trouble, and who is intelligent and capable.”
The crowd sucked in a sharp breath.
Xiao Yan Jing’s eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets.
He shot to his feet and strode over, reaching to drag her away.
“Fu Zhao Ning, are you insane?!
You’re still wearing the wedding dress meant to marry me!
Our engagement was only just broken—”
Fu Zhao Ning shook off his hand and stepped back.
Without noticing, she moved even closer to the carriage.
A faint medicinal scent drifted toward her.
Then a low voice came from inside.
It was deep and slightly hoarse from coughing.
Yet it was unbelievably pleasant to hear.
“You say you won’t cause trouble, and that you are intelligent and capable?”
“You mean yourself?”
Fu Zhao Ning felt her ears itch slightly at the sound of his voice.
What an absurdly pleasant voice.
Still, she answered firmly.
“Yes.
I mean me.”
It seemed as though the man inside gave a soft chuckle.
At once, Xiao Yan Jing hurriedly bowed toward the carriage.
“This humble one, Xiao Yan Jing of the Xiao Royal Residence, greets Prince Jun.
Prince Jun, this Fu Zhao Ning is a shameless, ignorant fool.
She has recklessly disturbed you—”
His voice was full of urgency.
He desperately hoped Prince Jun would punish her.
He wanted Prince Jun to crush her completely.
