Chapter 43. Sharing Rings
âMa-madamâŚ? Oh my, what happened here!!â
Belladonna slowly opened her eyes at Cindyâs loud voice.
Cindy, I just fell asleep⌠Youâre so loud in the morningâŚ
As Belladonna blinked, Cindy got even more excited.
âMadam! Did you and the lord finally get to exchange rings?â
Belladonna didnât answer.
âNo wonder the lord came out of your room so late today! Kyaa! Oh my goodness!â
Belladonna frowned at the noise and looked down at her body.
She wasnât wearing anything, and her skin was covered in marks. Anyone could tell sheâd spent a passionate night with her husband.
Belladonna nodded, embarrassed.
âEek! Congratulations! Where are the rings? Wait! Iâll go tell Wolf right now!â
Cindy, waitâŚ
But Cindy was already bouncing out the door before Belladonna could stop her.
ââŚWhatever.â
Left alone, Belladonna buried her face in the pillow and went back to sleep.
She opened her eyes again four hours later.
It was already past noon by the time Belladonna finally got up, washed, and went downstairs to eat.
âGood afternoon, madam!â
âHave a nice day, madam!â
Everyone greeted her with extra bright smiles.
Am I imagining things? Belladonna felt awkward and shy, smiling back as she entered the dining room.
âIâm hungryâŚâ
She opened the dining room door, but what she saw inside was nothing like usual.
The room was packed with strange knightsâbig, rough-looking men with dark faces.
What Belladonna was startled and backed away, not sure what to do.
Some of the knights saw her.
âOh, madam?â
âOh, madam! Itâs mealtime for you! Sorry!â
Some faces were familiar, others were new, but all seemed to know Belladonna. They smiled or bowed to her.
Belladonna just blinked, feeling lost.
If you all fill up the dining room, what about my food?
âMadam, sorry if we surprised you.â
One knight stepped forward. Belladonna recognized his face and dropped her guard.
Hazel
She pointed at the crowded room, her face asking what was going on.
Hazel quickly explained.
âAh, maybe Wolf didnât tell you. The knights just arrived in Sirlennia today. Did you know we were coming?â
Belladonna nodded. Sheâd heard about it from Cindy yesterday.
âWe rode a long way and didnât have a proper meal, so we came here to eat. We didnât realize you hadnât eaten yet.â
I did come down really lateâŚ
Hazel started to lead the knights out.
âWeâll leave so you can eat in peace, madam. Weâll come back later.â
No, wait!
Belladonna waved her hands. She didnât want all the knights to leave just for her.
She gestured for them to stay and eat, lowering her hands to show it was okay.
âMadam!â
Suddenly, the back door burst open and Wolf rushed in, out of breath.
He sighed when he saw the crowded room.
âAh, Iâm late. I wanted to tell you earlier, but I couldnât wake youâŚâ
Belladonna smiled at Wolf to show it was fine.
Wolf nodded, then remembered something.
âOh, madam! Cindy told me about the rings. Iâll get them right away.â
âRings?â
When he said ârings,â Belladonna saw all the knights, including Hazel, prick up their ears.
No, not here!
Belladonnaâs face turned red as she blinked quickly.
Wolf, not noticing, smiled proudly.
âYes, everyone! Our lord and madam have finally exchanged rings.â
âReally?â
âRings? Wow! Congratulations, madam!â
âFinally! Youâre truly husband and wife now! Iâm so happy for you!â
The knights all cheered, clapped, and congratulated her.
The whole dining room was full of celebration and laughter.
Haha⌠Belladonna fanned her red face and smiled.
âExchanging rings, huh.â
A big knight sat beside Escallion on the steps.
He had gray hair and a gray beard, looking like a seasoned mercenary.
Escallion glanced at the man, took a drink from his canteen, and nodded.
âCongratulations. Itâs been weeks since your wedding, and there was no news. I thought maybe you werenât a real man after all!â
The man laughed, grabbing Escallionâs canteen.
Escallion frowned.
âWhereâs your canteen, Graham?â
âI drank it all. It was a long ride. I went to Griblata looking for you and had to chase you all the way here. At least I could join the knights coming here.â
Escallion clicked his tongue but looked more relaxed, seeing his old friend.
Graham looked around.
âSo, whereâs your wife? Iâve heard about the Saintess of Astanya, but never met her. I missed the wedding.â
âYou canât just meet my wife whenever you want.â
Escallion answered sharply.
âThey say sheâs really beautiful.â
âThat rumor is right.â
âIs it true she canât speak? Not even a word?â
Graham asked without thinking about manners, but Escallion didnât mind. He remembered last night and replied,
âShe doesnât.â
âWow⌠She must seem like a doll just sitting there. Doesnât it bother you?â
âBetter than your wifeâyou two only argue.â
âOuch, that hurts.â
Graham blinked his big eyes as Escallion got up and stretched his arms.
Graham put down the canteen and said,
âWhat about her power? Can she really heal? I need thatâmy body aches everywhere.â
Escallion looked back at him.
âWhy donât you use her holy power? The people here would love it, and it would help you rule your land.â
Escallion frowned.
âAre you telling me to act like the Pope?â
âWhatâs wrong with that?â
Escallion thought of the sly Pope and shook his head.
âMy wife is not a Saintess anymore. She wonât use her powers unless itâs special.â
âThatâs a wasteâŚâ
âStop worrying about my wife. Here, take this.â
Escallion tossed Graham a wooden sword.
âWhatâs this⌠Wait, are we sparring?â
âCome on. I need a workout.â
âHey, take it easy! I just came from Griblata! You didnât even let us use a portalâŚâ
Escallion picked up another sword and charged.
âIâm not waiting for you to get ready. Did a battlefield ever wait for you?â
Escallion smiled as he swung the sword down.
âMadam! The knights are training in the yard right now!â
Cindy yelled, looking out the window.
Belladonna looked up from her book.
Training? What does that have to do with me?
Cindy nervously danced in place.
âWould you like to go cheer for them? Itâs the first training since they arrived. Your presence would mean a lot.â
Cheer for them
Belladonna didnât feel like it. She was still embarrassed after Wolf talked about the rings in front of everyone.
Cindy noticed her reluctance and added,
âIf you go, the lord would be so happy!â
Escallion?
Belladonna narrowed her eyes at Cindy, suspicious.
Do you just want to watch the knights?
âI swear, I just thought it would be nice! We could bring drinks and snacks, too. The knights would love it!â
But thatâs what Wolf or the other staff should do, not me.
âLetâs go, please! Watching their training will be fun for you, too!â
Cindy grabbed Belladonnaâs hand and pulled her along.
