Chapter 42
âBy the way, I heard something from my father,â Ivy began. âUnlike Lady Ellie, Lady Tiana is supposedly terrible at her studies.â
While the other young ladies around me were offering compliments, Ivyâs words were a clear provocation.
âIâve heard that too,â Anna added quickly. âDidnât she dismiss her tutor unfairly, purely out of selfishness?â
âThatâs quite a famous story, isnât it? Iâve heard it as well,â Rika chimed in.
So thatâs how it is. Rika and Annaâboth invited hereâare clearly part of Ivyâs little clique.
âAnd to think sheâs a member of the Astaire ducal family,â Ivy pressed on, her tone growing sharper. âIs it acceptable for someone from such a household to be so uneducated? Itâs only natural for nobles to acquire learning, donât you think?â
Her voice carried a certain forceâalmost as if she was enjoying this. I could swear there was a smirk tugging at her lips.
âT-Thatâsââ
âMariana.â
My maid Mariana tried to defend me, but I stopped her.
Sheâs just a servantâif she speaks out here, itâll only make things worse. A ladyâs maid interrupting the conversation of noble daughters would cause a scandal. It would only draw more criticism.
Sheâs older than I amâhow can she find joy in bullying someone younger?
Do they really think I havenât studied a single thing since I was reborn into this world? Learning about the world I live in is the most basic necessity.
âLadies, youâve all advanced quite far, it seems,â I said with a calm smile. âIâve only reached the middle of the upper volume of Social Theories. As for history, Iâve already completed the entire curriculum.â
âWhat?â
Ivy blinked in surprise at my sudden display of knowledge.
âI found the second emperor of Naceliaâs agricultural reforms for the peasantry quite fascinating,â I continued. âLately Iâve also been studying foreign languagesâLydian, Sessianâand even the history of neighboring nations. Which policies or great historical figures do you all admire most?â
I let the question hang in the air.
âItâs as you said, Lady Ivyâitâs natural to study the world we live in. All the more so for us nobles. Our lives are supported by the common people, so itâs only right that we gain knowledge to make their lives easier.â
They all fell silent, simply staring at me.
âIgnorance is a sin.â
ââŚ!â
âHow far have you all truly thought about what that means?â
Ivy and her two allies could only glare, speechless.
Beside me, Michelle had lowered her gaze. Her hair hid her expressionâbut was she smiling?
âHehe⌠Lady Tiana is quite right,â Michelle said, her tone bright but cutting. âOne can easily tell when someone lacks educationâjust from the way they speak.â
It sounded like she was defending me. So Michelle had only been invited hereâshe wasnât part of Ivyâs group after all.
âUnlike you three,â she continued coolly, âLady Tiana reads extensively and studies on her own initiative. Sheâs cultivated and well-educated. And the way youâve spoken to her just nowâsurely you realize that counts as insulting a fellow noble.â
S-Sister
That was the first time Iâd ever heard her speak so sharply to others. Was she⌠angry?
âOh, I see,â Ivy sneered. âSo maybe sheâs just got a nasty personality then. Considering how her own family treats her like an outcast⌠do you even know what they call her? My father told meââthe stain.ââ
She laughed mockingly.
âAnd isnât it true that Lady Ellie was long bullied by Lady Tiana?â
She dared to say it so directly.
I couldnât deny itâit was true.
The frustration burned in my chest.
Splash!
Water dripped onto the table.
âHuh?â
Ivy froze, confused.
M-My sister?
Everyone in the room went silent.
Unable to contain her fury, my sister had thrown her cup of tea straight at Ivy.
âW-What do you think youâre doing?!â
Clatter!
Ivy shot to her feet and lunged toward my sister, hand raised to slap herâ
âbut Nicholas, our escort, stepped in and caught her wrist mid-swing.
âLet go of me! Youâre just a lowly bodyguard!â
âIâm employed to protect the young lady from harm,â he replied evenly.
Ivyâs face twisted in rage.
âWhat is wrong with you people?! Iâm just trying to teach this so-called âladyâ her place!â
âIvy Quinzel.â
My sister spoke her name quietlyâbut her voice carried a deep, heavy weight.
Everyone froze.
âDo you even realize who youâre speaking to?â she said coldly. âThe one who deserves the name âstainâ is youâsomeone who can do nothing but hurl insults at those above her.â
âW-What did you just say?!â
âHow dare you speak like that!â Anna and Rika exclaimed in unison.
âI heard every word you said just now,â my sister continued sharply. âRemember it wellâand do not ever involve yourselves with us again.â
She said everything Iâd wanted to say but couldnât.
âI have never been harassed by Lady Tiana,â she added firmly.
So thatâs whyâwhen Iâd apologized to her for all Iâd done, sheâd told me it was also her fault. She never even considered what Iâd done to be harassment.
âTia, letâs go. Talking to people without learning makes me feel ill.â
âY-Yes.â
We both rose to leave.
âWell then, Iâll excuse myself as well,â said Michelle, standing gracefully.
âWaitâcome back here!â
Behind us, Ivyâs enraged shouting echoed through the room, her maid and guard struggling to calm her downâbut she showed no sign of stopping.
Ignoring the commotion, my sister and I quietly made our way back to the carriage.
