(Manami, Reiko, and Masami)
The next dayâŠ
Miraculously, Manami was at school.
Normally, she wouldnât put down her paintbrush until morning, but since Emi had promised to model for her again today, the two of them had ended up falling asleep in each otherâs arms around three in the morning.
But with the spring sunshine making her drowsy, Manami was absentminded and sleepy.
âManami, you look sleepy. Were you up all night painting again?â
Manami, lying down with her head on the desk, murmured:
âSort of⊠but I only painted until three this time, then went to bed⊠Still, Iâm amazing, right? I actually came to school.â
âYes, very amazing. As expected of a middle schooler!â
Reiko stroked Manamiâs head as she lay there, brushing away the strands of hair scattered across the desk.
At that moment, Nakayama Masami, who had just been chosen as class representative in homeroom, came over.
âRei-chan, youâre good at piano, arenât you?â
âI wouldnât say good, butâŠâ
âI know you are! Iâve been listening since elementary school at the music recitals. But we never ended up in the same class, so I never had the chance to talk to you.â
âYou shouldnât have worried about that. You could have talked to me anytime. Do you play piano too, Masami-chan?â
âI gave up halfway through. Thatâs why I admire people who can playâŠâ
âWhat are you saying! Itâs not too late. You should try again.â
âNo, I canât. I donât have the time. Cram schoolâŠâ
âAh, right. Piano only matters if youâre applying to the music department.â
âBut I write poetry. PoemsâŠâ
âOh really? A proper little literary girl, huh?â
âSo, if possible, I was hoping someone could put music to my poems.â
âWhat? Thatâs so boring!â
âRei-chan, donât you compose music?â
Masami looked disappointed that Reiko showed no interest in composing.
âComposing is a hassle! Thatâs Manamiâs territory!â
âManami-chan plays piano too?â
When Masami called her, Manami sluggishly lifted her sleepy face.
âI hate pianoâŠâ
Her absentminded tone made Reiko point at the book Masami was clutching to her chest.
âWhat are you saying? Thatâs⊠a poetry collection?â
âYes, itâs a collection of poems I wrote myself.â
Masami handed it to Reiko.
It looked like a plain white autograph book, filled with colorful pens and colored pencils, with bright illustrations mixed in among the poems.
âWow, so cute. Masami, youâre surprisingly meticulous.â
Drawn by the word âcute,â Manami also asked:
âCan I see it too?â
âOf course!â
Reiko handed the poetry collection to Manami.
âDo you write poetry too, Manami-chan?â
âNo, I donât write poems. I draw.â
âDraw? Like paintings? Japanese-style? Western-style?â
âYes. I do oil painting, thoughâŠâ
âWhat are you talking about! Manami is actually a real pianist!â
Reiko burst out impatiently.
âYou play piano too?â
âA little, I guessâŠâ
âOh, come on! Donât play innocent!â
âRei, I donât think youâre using that phrase right.â
âClose enough!â
Reiko had a habit of blurting out words without much thought, just going with the mood of the moment.
She quickly changed the subject.
âMasami, are you free during lunch break?â
âYeah, I donât have any plans.â
âThen letâs go to the gym together. Iâll show you Manamiâs true identity.â
âRei, youâre exaggerating! But Masami-chan, you should come too. I just found a really nice poemâIâll put it to music for you.â
As the bell was about to ring for class, Manami tied back her long hair with a rubber band and said to Masami:
âReally?â
âOf course! And let me borrow this poetry collection for a bit. I want to read it more carefully later.â
âSure. Please read it thoroughly!â
