Chapter 55…
Encounter at the Science Museum
As Expected of You, Senpai
After the battle ended, the three of us took shelter under the museumâs roof and removed the plate from our Gears.
As we did, the Star Armors disappeared, dissolving into blue light. A moment later, the Gears themselves emitted the same light and vanished from our abdomens.
The museum we were at was some distance from my home, but it seemed the Gears had safely returned as usual.
Just then, accompanied by a âGood work,â Chiharu Hanayama and Miyu Mikagami-senpai arrived.
âThanks, Chiharu-chan!â said Yui, accepting a towel.
âŚWhere did that towel even come from?
Still, there was something more important I needed to ask first.
âSoâwhat was stolen?â
âWell, the place was definitely ransacked, but weâre not sure what was taken⌠Huh? Whereâs your dad, Mikagami-senpai?â
âHe went back with the other curators to double-check.â
Not sure, huh⌠Maybe itâs something ordinary people wouldnât recognize.
Thinking that, I just replied, âI see.â
Then I was handed a towel too, so I started wiping myself down. My clothes were still damp from when the Star Armor disappeared.
âŚStill, with all this commotion, the police are bound to show up soon.
And this isnât Seiun Cityâso the officers here wonât have a clue about monsters.
âŚI might need to contact Detective Maruoka.
While I was thinking that, ShirĹ, who was lightly wiping himself with his towel, spoke up.
âHey, uh⌠Mikagami-senpai hasnât said a word this whole time, and thatâs kinda scary.â
Yui and I looked toward Mikagami-senpai at the same time.
She was staring at usâthough her eyes werenât really focused. It looked like she was deep in thought.
Yui hesitantly approached her. âUm⌠Mikagami-senpai?â
âOhâsorry,â she said, snapping back to herself at last.
âI just⌠canât really believe everything that happened.â
Well, thatâs understandable.
Thatâs exactly why magic and divine relics are kept secret.
These are powers only a handful of people can wield. âIf their existence became public, society would descend into chaosââthatâs the Associationâs stance.
So ideally, the fewer people who know about the constellationsâ powers, the Fallen Stars, or the Taint, the better.
But contrary to that ideal, Yui had already started explaining everything to Mikagami-senpai.
âââ
âSo basically⌠youâve all been fighting monsters, and your power comes from constellations.
And thatâs why you came here todayâto learn more about constellations so itâd help in battle⌠right?â
Looking apologetic, Yui murmured, âYes⌠thatâs right.â
In the end, Yui ended up explaining pretty much everything in broad strokes.
I couldnât help but sigh and rub my forehead.
Still, sheâd only given her a rough outlineânothing detailed about the Gears, the Star Armor, or Star Power.
I actually felt relieved that Iâd never told Yui about the Association or the deeper truths.
And besides, whatâs done is done.
Itâs not like I can erase memories with magic anyway.
Then Yui bowed deeply. âIâm so sorry for lying!â
But Mikagami-senpai gently grasped Yuiâs shoulders and straightened her up.
âItâs okayâyou donât need to apologize. Sure, it was surprising, but I wouldnât get mad over that kind of lie. Sometimes people lie to protect someone else. What matters more to me is using the power of the constellations to hurt othersâthatâs what I couldnât forgive.
So even if I canât do much myself, Iâll still cheer you on.â
âMikagami-senpaiâŚ!!
Um! If itâs alright with you, could you keep teaching us more about the constellations?â
At Yuiâs words, Mikagami-senpai smiled again.
âOf course!â she said warmly.
âIf you ever need help, Iâll be there!â
âYay!! Um, Mikagami-senpai, can we add each other as friends?â
âOf course!â
After that, the two of them started fiddling with their phones to exchange contacts.
Even right after a battle, Yui was still full of energy.
Maybe it was because todayâs fight had been short and hadnât drained her too much.
âŚNo, Corvus had been a tough opponent.
Yui had even taken some hits.
âŚCould she be stronger than I thought?
As I was silently pondering that, ShirĹ turned to me.
âSo, Masatoâwhat do we do with this?â
He handed me something heâd been holding.
It was the plate weâd retrieved earlier.
RightâIâd forgotten about it since Hanayama and Mikagami-senpai had shown up.
âThis is a plate, right?â
âYeah.â
âWhich constellation is it fromâŚ?â
I couldnât answer immediately.
If it were one of the 48 classical constellations, I could probably guess from the star pattern.
But outside that set, Iâd have to look it up.
I took out my phone to checkâ
âbut Yui and Mikagami-senpai arrived before I could start.
âFrom left to right, those are Sextans, Octans, and Telescopium,â Mikagami-senpai said smoothly.
My phone screen showed the same answer.
âŚHer astronomy knowledge is seriously terrifying.
Even ShirĹ muttered, âAs expected of you, SenpaiâŚâ
Then Hanayama added thoughtfully, âSo⌠theyâre all constellations related to astronomy, huh?â
âThatâs right,â Mikagami-senpai replied.
âUm⌠what are Sextans and Octans?â Yui asked, tilting her head.
Well, yeahâthose arenât exactly common names.
Honestly, I wouldnât have known them myself if I hadnât inherited a constellationâs divine power.
But the conversation kept moving in a direction I hadnât expected.
âThey should both have real instruments on display here⌠Want to go see them?â
âYes! Letâs! âŚWhat about you guys?â
The three of us exchanged looks.
I didnât particularly need to go.
More importantly, I had to deal with the authorities.
âŚActually, this might work out perfectly.
âYou three go on ahead.â
âWhat about you, Ma-kun?â
âIâve got something I need to take care of. You guys go back without me.â
But Yui clearly didnât like that. âEh? No way! Weâre coming with you!â
ShirĹ added, âYeah, like weâre just gonna leave it all to you.â
Still, I couldnât drag them into this.
âItâs fine,â I said simply, then turned to Mikagami-senpai.
âMikagami-senpai, could I ask you to look after these three?â
Then I bowed slightly.
âS-sure⌠but are you okay with that, Insei-kun?â
âYes. Please.â
ââŚAlright, then,â she said after a pause, and led ShirĹ, Hanayama, and Yui back into the museumâ
their voices of protest echoing behind them.
Once they were gone,
I opened my contacts and brought up the number for Detective Maruoka.
