Chapter 3 – A Medical Examination
In response, everyone looked at her with the same expression—
“Do you think we’re idiots?”
Hua Mian crossed her arms across her chest, feeling frustrated and suffocated.
“Carry him away.”
“…Thank you.”
Her first sentence was tinged with anger, and even the pure white long nightdress she wore couldn’t hide the breathtaking sharpness in her brows and eyes.
But the second sentence was gentler, and she even nodded politely at the doctor.
“Yes, Madam,” Yu Jin replied.
After examining Shen Xueji’s condition, the doctor visibly let out a breath of relief.
“Alright, Miss, please don’t worry. Your beast husband most likely had an old injury relapse. I’ll treat him seriously.”
Hua Mian quietly exhaled as well.
As long as he wasn’t dying.
Perhaps because her expression had softened, the gloom normally between her brows gone, the doctor hesitated for a moment, then decided to speak.
“Miss, about Yan An…”
Before the doctor could finish, Yu Jin cut him off with a mild smile.
“Doctor Ye, I’ll explain Yan An’s situation to Madam myself.”
Seeing Hua Mian tilt her head in confusion, Doctor Ye silently sighed and simply nodded.
“Very well.”
After Yu Jin and the others left the room with Shen Xueji, Hua Mian lay back down on the bed, exhausted.
Her head throbbed, her chest ached, and she even felt short of breath as if oxygen was running out. She couldn’t help tugging the blanket down and clutching her chest, gasping lightly.
After a while, she finally felt a little better.
She clearly remembered that although the original body in the novel was not healthy, it wasn’t this bad, right?
Otherwise, how would she have the energy to torment five beast husbands?
And how would she have survived even after being imprisoned and tortured for revenge later in the story?
Then another thought hit her.
She was the only variable in this body.
Could it be that her transmigration made the body worse?
The idea made Hua Mian feel even more suffocated.
In the end, she decided that no matter what, she had to fix this body.
Otherwise how was she supposed to enjoy good food and a comfortable life?
Meanwhile, in the cold room on the far west side of the first floor—
The lights were bright, but no amount of warmth drove away the chill.
Doctor Ye frowned deeply, staring at the blood analysis in his hand.
The more he read, the darker his expression became.
Yu Jin and Chu Fufeng didn’t dare to speak.
The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
“Doctor Ye… how is Brother Xueji?” Chu Fufeng finally couldn’t hold back his anxious voice.
“The full body scan shows he is covered in old injuries.”
“We’ll treat them!” Chu Fufeng said firmly.
Doctor Ye looked speechless for a moment.
“I never said they couldn’t be treated. But it may be expensive. And right now, he is constantly overdrawing his body. If this continues, his strength may decline.”
This sentence was far crueler to a beastman.
Any beastman would rather die than see their strength weaken.
Chu Fufeng opened his mouth again, but Doctor Ye quickly continued:
“But as long as we start treatment early, and he stops pushing himself so hard every day, he can still recover.”
Yu Jin stopped the boy from interrupting again with a small shake of his head.
“But that’s not his biggest problem right now.”
Yu Jin’s heart tightened again.
“His bloodwork shows he hasn’t taken a soothing potion for three years.”
“Impossible.”
Chu Fufeng was the first to speak.
Yu Jin was just as stunned.
Three years?
Wasn’t that exactly how long he had been Hua Mian’s beast husband?
But he had been buying soothing potions from the black market for all of them for three years. How could…
Yu Jin froze as the only possibility came to mind.
His pupils contracted sharply.
Seeing Yu Jin’s face go pale and his shoulders sag, Chu Fufeng also understood—and his eyes turned red.
“Brother Yu Jin, we have to save Brother Xueji.”
“…Alright.” Yu Jin’s voice was hoarse.
Doctor Ye’s father had once been the Hua family’s personal physician. After the family fell, he lost contact with them. Three years ago, Miss Hua Mian invited him back to serve as the family doctor again.
So he was familiar with these five beast husbands who had been assigned to her at once.
It had been strange even then.
The matchmaking center somehow matched five beastmen to her at once. Yan An wasn’t even an adult yet, and Chu Fufeng and Chi Rui had only just come of age.
Doctor Ye couldn’t bring himself to resent Hua Mian. She had once been gentle and kind, only becoming gloomy and extreme after the Hua family tragedy.
The world always tolerated rare females more.
And besides, she didn’t try to kill them.
His gaze swept over Yu Jin’s pale face and Chu Fufeng’s reddened eyes, and he sighed again.
They were innocent too.
Truly tragic.
Doctor Ye continued:
“Although we gave him a recovery potion to stabilize him for now, he has suppressed his instincts for too long. Combined with his old injuries flaring up, I can’t guarantee there won’t be danger.”
“Someone must stay with him tonight. If anything happens, call me immediately. I’ll also give Yan An a calming potion to stabilize him. Don’t panic.”
“My age is catching up with me. I can’t stay up all night,” Doctor Ye sighed, packed up his tools, and went to rest.
“Don’t worry. I’ll stay with him. Tonight, you and Chi Rui take turns watching over Yan An.”
“…Okay.”
Chu Fufeng looked deeply at Shen Xueji’s bloodless face, nodded at Yu Jin, straightened his back, and left the room.
Even the most impulsive youth is forced to grow up in the face of reality.
When the door closed, Yu Jin’s expression darkened. He sat down at the bedside, thoughts in disarray.
He stayed until eight the next morning. Just when they thought both Shen Xueji and Yan An had made it through—
Shen Xueji suddenly developed a high fever.
“Doctor Ye! No time to explain—Xueji is burning up!”
Yu Jin practically snatched Doctor Ye off the bed. Fortunately, the doctor habitually slept fully dressed in case he needed to respond quickly.
“Put this old man down first!” Doctor Ye felt as though his bones were going to fall apart.
But seeing Yu Jin’s panic, he gave up struggling.
He probably wouldn’t die just yet.
After checking Shen Xueji’s condition, Doctor Ye’s face turned even darker.
“He must be soothed immediately.”
One sentence drained all color from Yu Jin’s face.
He swallowed, looked deeply at Shen Xueji, then forced himself to breathe steadily, paid the doctor, and asked him to check on Yan An before going home to rest.
Doctor Ye said no more.
Yu Jin strode out of the room and went to the second floor.
He stopped outside Hua Mian’s door and knocked firmly.
Knock knock knock. Knock knock knock.
The rhythmic knocking dragged Hua Mian out of a very pleasant dream.
She opened her eyes with visible disappointment. In the dream, she had been back in modern times—hot pot, crayfish, milk tea… eating whatever she wanted.
The knocking continued.
She rubbed her temples and opened the door.
“What is it?” Her expression showed how little patience she had.
Yu Jin took a deep breath—and suddenly dropped to his knees with a thud.
He pressed his forehead to the cold floor and said:
“Please, Madam. Please save Xueji.”
Hua Mian blinked.
What?
Shen Xueji was dying?
Just because she didn’t catch him when he collapsed last night?
Wasn’t this basically emotional blackmail?!
“I’m not a doctor. Asking me is useless. Get Doctor Ye or send him to a hospital,” she replied coldly.
She was a heartless succubus—she did not accept guilt-tripping or moral coercion.
Hua Mian moved to close the door and go back to sleep—
But a hand landed on the doorframe.
“Mm—!”
His hand was ruthlessly pinched by the closing door, and he let out a muffled groan.
“What exactly do you want?” Hua Mian’s patience was nearly gone.
“Madam, after becoming your beast husband, Xueji has been working himself to death for three years to support this household.”
Yu Jin lowered his head again and knocked it against the floor.
“Even if he has no achievements, he has worked himself to the bone. Madam, please save him. He needs your soothing. Without it, he will die.”
