ââIs it asleep?â
The wolfmanâMr. Raigaâ(well, he is a wolf, so just Raiga is fine)âapproached the fallen red dragon and sniffed at it, muttering quietly.
âDid you⊠do this?â
Mr. Stefan looked at me in surprise.
My head throbbed, and I answered âprobably,â before sinking weakly to the ground.
âTh-thank goodnessâŠ
So when I pray, monsters actually fall asleepâŠ!?
It was my first time praying in front of a real monster, so I was both relieved that it actually worked and completely drained from using so many prayers in a rowâfirst to heal the soldiers and horses, and now this. My body felt like jelly.
âD-donât just stand there! Kill it! Kill it now!â
A man suddenly popped up from a hollow in the grass beside the road, shouting as he pointed at the dragon.
âWaitâum, that dragonâŠâ
Still sitting on the ground, I reached out my hand weakly.
âI donât⊠think it felt evil,â I murmured.
Mr. Stefan sheathed his sword and gave me a gentle smile.
This person seems really nice.
I nodded, while the man kept yelling.
âWho the hell is that brat!?â
âIâm Layla. Former Saint of the Grand Temple of the Kingdom of Kiara.â
âYouâre theââSaintâ?â
Mr. Stefanâs eyes widened.
Well, to be honest, calling myself the Saint still feels presumptuous.
But itâs trueâI was officially appointed as the Saint, the highest rank among the temple sisters.
âThe Crown Prince told me to leave, so⊠here I am. Anyway,â
I met Stefanâs blue eyes directly.
âThat dragon doesnât feel⊠evil to me.â
He nodded thoughtfully and murmured,
âIndeed, itâs strange for a fire dragon to appear on a highway like this. Very strange.â
Then he turned to the merchant.
âSir, do you have any idea why it might have shown up?â
âMind your own business! Do your job as a guardâkill the damn thing, put out the fire on the wagon, grab the goods, and get the runaway horses!â
âThatâs true enough,â Stefan sighed, looking at the burning wagon crackling nearby.
From the overturned cart, bolts of cloth in many colors rolled out one after another.
âAh, a traveling cloth merchant, maybe.
I remembered seeing merchants like that spreading out their goods in the city square when I looked down from the Grand Cathedral.
So many colors of cloth. I wish I could wear a dress that vibrant someday.
It would be such a waste if they burned.
Still crouched down, I clasped my hands before my chest.
If holy magic can calm monsters and disastersâthen maybe it can calm this fire too?
I began to recite a prayer.
And thenâ
the flames vanished, as if they had never been there at all.
