Chapter 32 â The Child the Empire Watches
Marquis Darwin looked at the Empress Dowager with clear disapproval.
She was sitting comfortably, chatting with Sharon Abner as if they were old friends.
âSince when did those two become so close?â he thought, frowning.
The Empress Dowager was not someone who mingled with nobles.
Her circle had always been smallâlimited to a few old handmaidens who had served her for decades.
âWhen I heard she was attending a childâs birthday party, I thought maybe sheâd finally returned to politics.â
But it turned out⌠sheâd really just come to celebrate a five-year-oldâs birthday.
ââŚFather, what do we do now?â
Behind him, his twelve-year-old son James whispered carefully.
Darwin shook his head.
âNot today. We canât even get close to her, let alone talk.â
Irritated, he gulped down his cold tea.
Then suddenlyâ
âYour Majesty, the Empress Dowager!â
A young, high-pitched voice rang out from the entrance to the mansion.
Everyone turned.
A small girl was running across the garden, her little feet pattering quickly over the stone path.
Next to her, a boy a head taller followed along, trying to keep pace.
âOh, that must be the childâthe one House Abner is sponsoring.â
And thenâ
âOh, my dear little Annelia is here!â
Marquis Darwinâs jaw dropped.
The Empress Dowager had actually stood upâ
and was walking toward the girl herself.
He wasnât the only one shocked.
Every noble nearby froze, wide-eyed, watching the ruler of the Empire smile so warmly.
âWhat a lovely dress! Have you been sleeping well and eating properly?â
âYes!â
âNo fussing about vegetables or side dishes?â
âNo! Ria doesnât fuss! Iâm five years oââ
âShe mostly ate bread for a while,â Sharon Abner cut in smoothly.
The little girlâs face instantly fell.
âOh dear,â the Empress Dowager said. âIs that true? Did you only eat bread?â
Annelia waved her small maple-leaf-shaped hands wildly.
âN-no! That was just for a little while because my stomach hurtâ!â
âA child who lies to the Empress Dowager might get scolded, you know.â
âItâs true! It was just that time! Now I eat vegetables, even spinach, lots and lots!â
The Empress Dowager burst into laughter and gently cupped the girlâs cheeks.
âAlright, alright. I believe you.â
Then she signaled to a servant, who quickly brought over a small chairâ
one size perfectly for a child.
âCome, sit here for a while.â
Annelia looked at the chair, then back at the Empress Dowager, clearly unsure.
âIt wonât take long,â the Empress said kindly.
âTian will be here soon. Keep me company until then, and afterward, you can go play with your friends.â
Then she looked at the boy standing behind Annelia.
âAnd what about your friend? Should he sit next to you?â
The boy smiled politely and bowed.
âItâs an honor to meet you, Your Majesty. Iâm Arwin, younger brother of Baron Dennis.â
Sharon Abner added from behind,
âBaron Dennis serves as one of our research heads at House Abner. This young man is his sibling.â
The Empress Dowagerâs eyes brightened with interest.
âMy, my! So many young faces in the Abner estate now!â
Then she clapped her hands.
âWe must send Tian here more often. Heâs been so lonely since losing his mother. Friends his own age will be such a blessing!â
The nobles around them exchanged looks.
Their gazesâcurious, calculatingâslowly turned toward Annelia.
Marquis Darwin was no exception.
ââŚItâs not the Empress Dowager,â he whispered.
His son blinked. âSir?â
âThe one we should approach isnât her.â
Excitement flickered in Darwinâs eyes.
âJames, when those children leave, follow them.â
âFollow them?â
âYes. Donât lose sight of themâget close, make friends.â
Then he glanced around at the other nobles.
Many of whom were wearing the same greedy expression as he was.
âSee that? Theyâre all thinking the same thing. So you must act first.â
James frowned in confusion.
âBut Father, didnât you say that girl came from an orphanage?â
Darwin clicked his tongue sharply.
âYou fool. Do you really think background matters right now? Look around! Look at this party! Look at the Empress Dowager!â
The Empress Dowager was still smiling warmly, chatting gently with the child.
âEven if that little brat has no bloodline, sheâs the Empress Dowagerâs favorite! That means we must get close.â
âButâŚâ
âChildren like thatâthose whoâve never known real affectionâ
You just treat them kindly once or twice, and theyâll hand over their heart completely.â
He patted his sonâs shoulder meaningfully.
âDo this right, and we might gain connections to both the royal family and the Abners.â
Reluctantly, James nodded.
***
âSo youâre saying you helped develop the reagent used for the mine reinspection and also made the mana stone purification formula yourself?â
âUm, thatâs not exactlyââ
âYes, Your Majesty,â Arwin cut in smoothly. âRiaâs a genius. Even my older brother, who graduated top of his class from the Imperial Alchemy Academy, admits it.â
I glanced at Arwin in panic.
âTh-thatâs not true! I just helped a little!â
âShe is exceptionally brightâfar beyond her age,â Sharon Abner added calmly.
âSurely Your Majesty has noticed that as well.â
Both of them were making me sound like some kind of prodigy.
I gawked at them helplessly until the Empress Dowager spoke again.
âOh my, I didnât know that! Then tell me, dearâwould you like to work at the Imperial Alchemy Academy someday?â
The moment she said Imperial Alchemy Academy, my head snapped toward her.
I nodded quickly.
âHmm⌠maybe the Academy! Or⌠or the International Magic Tower!â
âThe Magic Tower, too?â
âOr both!â
âBoth?â
Now everyoneâArwin, Sharon, and the empress dowagerâwas staring at me.
I raised my arms confidently.
âThe storybooks say to dream big!â
Arwin chuckled softly. âYouâll definitely make it, Annelia.â
I nodded proudly, while the Empress Dowager and Sharon exchanged amused, half-shocked looks.
The Empress Dowager finally said to Sharon,
âI never realized your eye for talent was this good.â
âIâm honored that Your Majesty noticed,â Sharon replied politely.
The Empress Dowager burst out laughing.
âHahaha!â
At once, the nobles around us joined in awkwardly.
âStill,â she said, smiling at Arwin, âthis young man is quite clever too. Tell me, since when has the Abner family had researchers?â
Sensing the conversation shifting toward boring adult talk, I quickly tugged on Arwinâs sleeve.
âArwin, should we go say hello to the others?â
âIf youâd like to,â he said warmly.
The Empress Dowager noticed and waved a hand.
âYes, yes. Iâve kept you too long. You may go, dear.â
âThank you, Your Majesty!â
A servant carefully set me down from my chair.
I bent at the waist to bowâ
But then the empress dowager called out again.
âMy dear.â
âYes?â
âThe title âYour Majestyâ sounds too stiff coming from you.â
âToo⌠stiff?â
âYes. Try calling me Grandmother instead.â
I blinked.
âGo on, Grandmother.”
I could feel every noble in the garden freezing in place.
âM-me? Call the Empress Dowager⌠Grandmother?â
She put on a mock stern face.
âOh? Are you refusing a direct command from the Empress Dowager?â
I flailed my hands. âN-no!â
Then, hesitantly, I whispered,
âY-Your Majesty⌠GrandmaâŚâ
The Empress Dowager pressed her lips togetherâ
and then burst out laughing.
âWonderful! Thatâs the spirit! Tian always says âGrandmama, Grandmamaâ so stifflyâitâs boring!â
ââŚâ
âWhen you reach my age, you get tired of all that formal nonsense, donât you agree, Sharon?â
Sharon Abner said nothing.
Her expression was hard to readâ
somewhere between discomfort and resignationâas she glanced between us.
âWell then,â the Empress Dowager said briskly, changing the subject.
âLetâs talk about this research department of yours, Sharon.â
As soon as she said that, I bowed again quickly and took Arwinâs hand.
Together, we slipped away from the table.
I didnât notice Sharon Abnerâs sharp, uneasy gaze following me as we left.
